Thoughtless gifts

Fully expecting to be told I am unreasonable on this one but would like others thoughts. We met up with my mil yesterday and exchanged presents and opened them after she left. Now I will say I am not materialistic at all. I like nice things but I'm not obsessed by it and I know that some people don't have a lot of money. I'm not flushed myself.
I received a deodorant wrapped up and my DH received a pair of socks. The kids each all received a card game and eldest DS got a toy car. None of these gifts were age appropriate or had any thought put into them. It is not about the money but it has just annoyed me I suppose that she has just picked up the cheapest things she's seen and thought " that'll do". Again it's not about the money, but the thought that goes into giving gifts that I think is important.
We didn't spend a lot on her, we got her a bottle of the alcohol she likes and a couple of little things that we know she likes. But she must have known that the gifts she got us were unsuitable. Reading this back I know how I come across, but honestly, she's their nan. It made me feel as though she doesn't care. It's the thoughtlessness that bothered me, not the lack of an expensive gift.

@thepeopleversuswork

My dad buys gifts literally for himself; it’s bizarre and incredibly insensitive. Last year he dropped heavy hints about a particular book he wanted: it’s the kind of obscure history book no-one would read unless it was their particular area of interest or stumble on or read for general interest. I got it for him and then found he had literally bought it for me. It is as if I had bought him cosmetics or toiletries.

If I hadn’t known better I might have suspected it was an early sign of cognitive decline but no it’s just total lack of empathy.

My dad does this too 🤣, last year I had a dash cam, turns out he had bought himself one and thought he would get me one too (because obviously if he wanted one so do I). This year I have dropped hints that I want a wildlife camera as I know he has just replaced his, I would be happy for him to gift me his old one, but I suspect I will get some useless gadget that he has also bought for himself.

@Oblomov20

My lovely Mil, who was the sweetest woman ever, once bought me a tea towel. On it was a black Santa. Hmm
so? Confused

I admit I have been puzzling over this for days, rook. Was scared to ask ...

My auntie always gets terrible presents, I can't say the thought it there because frankly it isn't, they're from charity shops and car boot sales 20 years ago, they always smell musty, they're used usually and usually just random! My mum 6ish years ago got some men's XXL y fronts. My mum is a size 8. Oh and surprisingly doesn't wear y fronts! One year she got me a picture of my older cousin wrapped in a frame, I was about 8. But tbh, crap presents run in my family, my grandma, other auntie and mum are the same. Money isn't an issue, but honestly I would prefer the £5 than the stuff I receive often from my mum. However, I do put lots of thought into theirs, I don't think their rubbish gift giving is intentional so I just roll with it and smile, this year my mum gave me some things she got from her glossybox(unwrapped just in an open bag) and I gave her a perfume she said she wanted, a candle(a nice one, she loves her candles) and some pretty earrings from f hinds that are her style. Thought next year I'm thinking of suggesting a secret Santa for all of us as sometimes its a bit shit when it's not reciprocated, at least that way I only need to think of one person.

"who opens presents before Christmas"
I bet this has already been answered as I am only on page 3 of 11

I open some of mine, the lovely one's from friends, because on Christmas morning I'll get organised and drive to spend it with my mother who has fewer presents from her friends, so I have time to enjoy my gifts from my friends, rather than unwrapping in a rush before setting off and also don't sit unwrapping all my 'extras' in front of her.

I can't see that it matters, I think it's kinder to me and my friends for me to unwrap and appreciate on Christmas Eve
