To put a note asking them to move their car?

It’s been outside our house for 4/5 weeks. I don’t know who it belongs too. I resisted at first in case they were isolating but it’s bugging me now. Especially as it gets towards Christmas, we will be coming from parents house with a car load of presents and we keep having to park far up the road. We have a 3 year old dd. Just to say, I don’t think the space is ours but think it’s inconsiderate leaving it outside someone else’s house for so long?!

YABU - it’s a free country, get over it
YANBU - leave a polite note on the car

@ProudAuntie76

If it’s not stolen, the police will at least have the details for the owners and can enquire as to what might be going on. If it’s not dodgy, that might shame them into moving.

Both times I reported it, I’d never seen anyone go in and out of the vehicle etc. It was obviously unattended for a month, hence my reporting.

But if its not shown as stolen then the police won't do enquiries.

Unfortunately OP if it's legally parked (which it sounds like it is, as it's taxed and insured) then they have as much right to park outside your house as you do.

Gettingthrough2020 · 20/12/2020 15:28

I knew someone who called the police in this situation. Turns out it was stolen and dumped. The rightful owner turned up and was very grateful!

Openalltheadvent · 20/12/2020 15:29

I will report it, thank you

Sorry but on a street you don't own the pavement and have zero right to expect to be able to park there every time. If you need a house with parking that much, move to a house with parking.

The car that's parked there has just as much right as you. It might be annoying but ultimately it's tough shit.

Mortgageandmoney · 20/12/2020 15:30

I'm confused. I live on a terraced street and my car hasn't moved much since March because I've been WFH. Didn't realise I was being inconsiderate...

CounsellorTroi · 20/12/2020 15:32

Unless it's resident parking and the car isn't displaying a permit, there's nothing much you can do other than inform the police.

ProudAuntie76 · 20/12/2020 15:32

what do you mean whats going on you can park where you like!

If a car that’s never been seen in the neighbourhood before has been parked in exactly the same position for almost FIVE WEEKS and the neighbours have no idea who it belongs to, there are no comings and goings etc, it’s not unreasonable to assume that it’s abandoned. Or worse. My university friend’s mother died suddenly in her vehicle in a car park. It was a long time before her body was found. Where is the person who this vehicle belongs to? They could have gone into a house and never come out. Stranger things have happened.

Yes you can park where you like but after a month, it’s going to raise suspicion.

Sparklesocks · 20/12/2020 15:32

If it’s parked legally and not in a space that is specifically allocated to your house then I don’t think you should ask them to move. It’s annoying but just the nature of on street parking.

Shame them into moving?

If there's nothing dodgy going on what do they have to be ashamed of?

Exactly this. You have no more right than they do to park there.
Openalltheadvent · 20/12/2020 15:36

@Mortgageandmoney is it outside your house?

I’d be ashamed to think I’d inconvenienced a family with a young child for five weeks. It’s not easy having to continually look for parking and lug groceries and any heavy items up and down a street for over a month. I’d see myself as a bit of a twat to be honest.

Bloodypunkrockers · 20/12/2020 15:38

Shame them into moving?

There is nothing to be ashamed of in parking legally anywhere

HilaryBriss · 20/12/2020 15:39

Same. I've been working from home since March and have used my car a handful of times since then, it hasn't moved for months and as I hardly leave the house, I probably wouldn't see a note left on my windscreen.

Biancadelrioisback · 20/12/2020 15:39

If you reported me for parking legally but just so happened to be where you wanted to park, tbh it would probably encourage me to park there more often.
It is not inconsiderate to park legally where you can. Doesn't matter if it happens to be outside your house. They are probably parked there because someone else is legally parked outside of their house and so on. I'm sure someone else is annoyed that you're currently parked outside their house etc

Mortgageandmoney · 20/12/2020 15:39

@openalltheadvent

No it's not, there's only parking on one side of the road. Everyone parks were there's a space.

Mortgageandmoney · 20/12/2020 15:40

where*

NameChange84 · 20/12/2020 15:42

This is one of those parallel universe posts for me.

I think it’s a real dick move to park outside someone’s door for a 4/5 week stretch. Even a week is really cheeky in my opinion.

I had a rental car stolen from me. It was sickening as I was young and scared I’d be liable for the cost of the car. Eventually someone reported it having been parked outside their house for a while. I was really grateful and would agree that it should be reported after all this time.

ProfessionalWeirdo · 20/12/2020 15:43

OP, does your street have a WhatsApp group? If so, is it worth posting a question asking politely if anyone knows whose car it is? You could add that you're a bit concerned because it's been there for so long without moving.

StanfordPines · 20/12/2020 15:45
@Dontfuckingsaycheese did I not say this in my op? I don’t think I own the road or space/accept this about terrace houses.
I would never leave it outside someone else’s house for 5 weeks. It’s called being considerate
Considerate of what though?
If you don’t have a drive then all is fair in love and parking wars.

Openalltheadvent · 20/12/2020 15:47

As I keep saying, never claimed to own the pavement, road.

Seems this boils down to the sort of person you are. I wouldn’t do it personally which is why it is irking me. You don’t know who lives in the house you have left it outside or what their circumstances may be. Most people on the street generally get a spot outside their house/very near. It’s rare that I have to park up the road, but have been having to do this for weeks now

OP posts:
LyndaSnellsSniff · 20/12/2020 15:49

But even if the car moves, how will you stop somebody else parking there when you are driving back from your parents house? Are you going to put cones there?

RickJames · 20/12/2020 15:50

Off topic, but if you haven't driven your car for a few months you might want to take it for a spin, just check it's still working and the tyres haven't gone flat.

On topic, report it incase it's been abandoned for some reason.

StoneofDestiny · 20/12/2020 15:51

Bizarre - never heard of anybody complaining about a legally parked car.

Openalltheadvent · 20/12/2020 15:51

Have reported it and it’s not stolen. They said with it being on the road I can contact the highways sector and they can move it (not going to go that far obviously)
