This was said by someone on the news:

"We just made the decision to leave based on the fact that my parents said come, and we couldn't bear the thought of no fresh air and a toddler going rogue round a small flat for the foreseeable," she said.

There are loads of us facing this exact situation and are just bloody well dealing with it.

@Crazycatlady83

This mutation has already reached the Netherlands (earlier this month) - if you think it isn’t already up the m1, you must be living on another planet!
Yes, but every additional person who takes it out of Tier 4 spreads it faster. London's R rate has doubled from 0.7 to 1.4 in a 3 week period.

If 10 people take the new strain from London to - say - York, in three weeks time, you would only have 75 people infected (assuming a 72h incubation period). By February half-term, you will have around 3000. But, if 100 people take the new strain to York, you will have 750 infections by mid-Jan and over 30,000 by half-term.

Theflying19 · 20/12/2020 11:59

So unbelievably selfish. People clearly fled London last night. Footage of hordes of people queuing for a train to Leeds for example, so now Leeds and other Northern cities will be full of the new variant of the virus the government is trying to contain. Doesn't matter what your plans were... Do Not travel. They should all be arrested.

xmasfairybuns · 20/12/2020 12:00

Have you also lost a parent in a hit and run then lost another relative two weeks before Christmas? No then we aren't in the same boat. Two covid funerals I'll attend this year with these restrictions

Sorry for your loss. The restrictions meant I couldn't go to the funeral I needed to go to.

CrotchBurn · 20/12/2020 12:01

@Theflying19

The south was relatively unaffected before so clearly the virus was brought down by northerners in the first place

Good for them. If more people do it, the government will know this draconian shit isn't flying anymore, and have to come up with alternatives that actually work.

Good for them too! Meanwhile people are committing suicide, mental health is getting worse, people are dying of many other things. This virus has a 99.3 survival rate and I’m not having anyone guilt trip me with stories of this and that. I’ve seen young people die from different things including pneumonia take your guilt tripping manipulation elsewhere. Tomorrow is never promised. You don’t know if it’s someone last Xmas or how people are feeling.

We need to restore dignity and truth will prevail. I do follow Doctors and many scientists who are saying this will cause more harm.

The suicide levels are no higher this year then in previous years.

Sigh...new variant is already out there.

Alan McNally Professor of Microbial Genomics at the uni of Birmingham has been testing samples from ALL OVER THE COUNTRY not just the south east/London. In the week ending the 16/12 70 % of those samples were the new variant.

The new variant was discovered in SEPTEMBER - people have been commuting in and out of London since September, do you really think its not out there.

And the current thinking is more infectious but same mortality a mortality of 0.4 - 0.6% rising with age.

It's just being used to ramp up the fear.

But people just want to shout ZOMBIE APOCALYPSE!

BendyWendy18 · 20/12/2020 12:07

YANBU OP. Everyone’s got a reason the restrictions don’t apply to them.

Oliversmumsarmy · 20/12/2020 12:07

Boris LIED that the virus was nothing to fear in January

But it really isn’t.

It has a less than 2% death rate. You have a higher chance of getting lung cancer and dying through smoking yet cigarettes are still out on the shelves.

MarieIVanArkleStinks · 20/12/2020 12:07

Some things it's within your power to address or change. Others, it isn't.

Complaining about other people's behaviour isn't going to stop them doing it. It's a waste of energy which you may as well conserve.

Yes!

Chuck'em in cells, beat them! Shoot them if they try to escape!

Let's do it!

Champion, at least I’ll still be able to queue jump in Tesco then GrinGrinGrin0

Nat6999 · 20/12/2020 12:09

Boris can hardly complain about people leaving London when one of his own advisors did exactly the same in lockdown & got away with it. Had he sacked him & made an example of him then maybe there may have been more respect for what he is saying now.

CrotchBurn · 20/12/2020 12:09

Wait does this new variant mean the vaccine is pointless?

MarieIVanArkleStinks · 20/12/2020 12:10

Do Not travel. They should all be arrested.

If they haven't broken any law? Is this the type of society you want?

Careful what you wish for. And FFS don't ask Santa to bring you a jet ski.

I don't think so, but it does highlight something I've been saying for a while - everyone days wait for the vaccine, they're ignoring its a very big IF the vaccine will be successful. We need a plan for the meantime that isn't just repeated lockdown

See my post above. The rate at which the new variant travels out of London will make a massive difference to the number of infections that occur over the next few months, and therefore to the NHS's chances of coping with the rising rates.

No one thinks the new strain can be confided to the South-East. The aim is to slow the spread.

Humpty11 · 20/12/2020 12:12

Seriously what is wrong with people?!
Everyone is fed up of the shit show that we call 2020, everyone has been affected in some ways due to covid. Whether it’s the awful end of the spectrum with having to deal with the grief and loss of someone because of it or simply having their plans cancelled for the year including holidays and other events.
Do people not realise that bundling into train stations to escape the tier 4 areas just for one measly Christmas isn’t going to make this go away quicker?!
It’s one year, it’s one Christmas, and in a weeks time everything will already have been forgotten and we’ll be onto the next thing.
I’m not saying this because I have no family or because I hate Christmas. I miss my family, I want to hug and kiss my parents and brothers and I want them to be able to see my 2 year old son and spend proper time with him & I love Christmas so much that I start planning in months before, but this year it’s not going to happen! And maybe if I keep reminding myself that it’ll be over soon if I carry on listening to the rules and avoid potentially helping it spread faster then it’ll be easier, who knows.
I understand that there are some situations where it would be detrimental to someone’s health to be alone during this period of time but I’m sure that wasn’t all those people pictured escaping the tier 4 areas last night.

Lightsontbut · 20/12/2020 12:12

*Yes, I'm sure after a year of absolute misery, I'm sure being called a "selfish cunt" will really make people want to pull together for the greater good.

I've never seen so much nasty, judgemental, sanctimonious behaviour in my life as during this pandemic. A bunch of entitled wankers demanding that they are put first and protected, whatever the cost, when they wouldn't piss on anyone else if they were on fire.*

Even more frustratingly I know some people who are also now refusing to have the vaccine as they want it tested more on other people first. As an NHS worker who can't be vaccinated I fee very strongly that that is much more worryingly selfish than people being honest about the MH struggles triggered by lockdown.

RufustheSniggeringReindeer · 20/12/2020 12:13

Oooh sorry

Missed catladys post

PhilCornwall1 · 20/12/2020 12:13

You do realise that it's not about the death rate, which no one is denying is low. It's about the fact that if we don't have restrictions, the health service will be overwhelmed. That means people will die of treatable illnesses and accidents because hospitals will be full. That is what every government is trying to avoid.

Yes, I think we've got that thanks, as we've had it rammed down our throats from day one.

Still done with it.

Monsterjam · 20/12/2020 12:14

The argument that it only kills 1% of people so let’s carry on regardless is so boring.
It has crippled the number of healthcare staff able to work, even if I don’t get too unwell should I catch it, I wouldn’t be able to work , hundreds and hundreds of nurses can’t work at any one time due to having to isolate. The NHS is struggling under the strain of no staff, reducing the infection rate and stopping the spread does more than just save 1% of people.
As a nurse I’m on my fucking knees with exhaustion trying to do the work of multiple people.
