This was said by someone on the news:

"We just made the decision to leave based on the fact that my parents said come, and we couldn't bear the thought of no fresh air and a toddler going rogue round a small flat for the foreseeable," she said.

There are loads of us facing this exact situation and are just bloody well dealing with it.

Yeah I too think everyone should just stop doing it. End this farce.

they can't bear the thought of being in a flat with a toddler they need to reflect on the choices that got them to this "unlivable" situation. First world tossers

Well I'm in the same situation and in my case, dh and I bought our "poky" flat because it was all we could afford. I'd had two stillbirths and was told I could not get pregnant again. Then I actually did get pregnant with DS and carried him to term - the doctors were amazed. But we couldn't afford to move. We could finally afford to move by March this year and put the flat on the market. Then covid hit and we've not been able to sell it.

So please tell me what different choices I ought to have made?

dadshere · 20/12/2020 11:39

The government has gone rogue with tier 4. For the vast majority of people, Corona is no more serious than any of a hundred viruses we all get over our lifetime. Many of us will have had it and not realised. Being locked in your home with children on the other hand is harmful to our mental health. Closing thousands of businesses is harmful to the economy and the health and well-being of the owners of these businesses and lets Amazon reign supreme as the only vendor able to meet our shopping needs. Amazon don't pay their taxes, this deprives the gov't of revenue. This means we have less money to invest in education, health, social care etc. Jeff Bezos has coined it in over corona and is getting even wealthier thanks to our stupid, inept, corrupt gov't. All of the tiers should be cancelled and everything opened up, with the proviso that those who are vulnerable need to take steps to protect their own health.

I think they made a very sensible, rational decision. I'm sure they have risked assessed it and will stay away from people outside their family unit for an appropriate length of time. I don't blame them at all.

In their shoes I would do the same.

@ForestNymph

Exactly. Someone needs to speak for the abused, the vulnerable, those in insecure employment, single parents in high rise flats, the mentally ill and just everyone who can't fucking take it anymore.
But there is no choice. Hospitals are filing up with Covid patients.

It has to be the priority for now. It doesn't mean that people are unsympathetic to those you mention just that they are not the priority right now.

DS1 is suffering with long Covid. It isn't a mild virus. It is debilitating the young as well.

It's hard but it as to be endured or it will go on even longer.

GlummyMcGlummerson · 20/12/2020 11:43

@DownstairsMixUp Thanks thinking of you and ignore the idiots

AccidentallyOnSanta · 20/12/2020 11:45

@rwalker

All we have to do is keep away from each other people DON't want to do that . So take the easy route and blame government Irrespective of what rules it's no safer to mix a christmas then another time. Loads of people just won't use common sense or make sacrifices
The issue isn't that there are rules , the issue is they make no sense.

I was expected to be in a room with 30 children, plus another adult. Go and cover in other rooms with 30 children. Talk to parents, handle forms, items brought in etc. Give hugs to upset children, offer first aid, clean up puke etc.

And that was fine.

DD was expected to be in a room with other 30 children. Have at least twice a week a teacher from another bubble. They even had a teacher come in from London a few times. And that was all fine .

It was all fine until Friday. Now on sunday it's not fine, and selfish and awful to see a friend,or have grandparents come over or whatever?

P.s. I am following the rules, always have. We will see no one until once again we're back at school. But don't tell me the rules are right or reasonable.

ForestNymph · 20/12/2020 11:45

It is mild for most people who get it. I've had it. I also had and have post viral fatigue after. Why they're calling it long covid idk. They don't call it long mononucleosis, or long influenza. I'm sorry your son is suffering but for most people this is a mild illness.

Mooballs · 20/12/2020 11:45

@Brieminewine

Brieminewine Good for them. If they left before midnight and both sides were happy then what’s the problem?

We all have to make individual risk assessments and do what feels right. For me, as front line nhs that means deciding to stay home and not visit family despite being ‘allowed’ as I don’t want to risk infecting them but I don’t begrudge others, this year has been shit for us all.

As front line nhs you shoukd be more flippin responsible about the message that you give out

@Mooballs and what message is that? That there’s more factors to consider than Covid? I see more people attending our ED with mental health crisis than I do with Covid.

If the person in the story left before midnight they are following government guidance, we know nothing of the particulars if they used public transport etc so don’t understand your outrage?

Right. As the parent of a teenager who had no covid symptoms but has developed blood clots due to covid I consider that I'm entitled to expect NHS staff to be responsible. He has his second op this week. My message was purely about your post rather than whether the OP is folliwing the rules or not. Many of us can have this virus without realising it and many have no ideas of the potential wide ranging consequences. I'm completely sick of the stupid irresponsible people on MN who just won't take this seriously.

Well OBVIOUSLY they should have gone for the mansion when they had the choice as they do clearly did Hmm

I worry about some people

wanderings · 20/12/2020 11:46

Perhaps one reason that people are not taking the virus seriously is because the propaganda comes from the mouths of LIARS, and from Boris's bumhole. He LIED about normal by September, he LIED about normal by this Christmas, he's probably LYING about some normalilty by Easter, he didn't sack Scummings, but rewarded him instead; it's almost certain that many of his cabinet are going to break the Christmas roolz AND GET AWAY WITH IT. Tony Blair LIED about weapons of mass destruction, committed mass murder for which he still walks free, and made himself extraordinarily wealthy at the taxpayer's expense. MPs fiddled their expenses and committed fraud on a scale most people would be sent to prison for. Boris LIED that the virus was nothing to fear in January. Then he LIED that lockdown was for three weeks to flatten the curve. And before the shit really hits the fan, years of recession begin and millions are unemployed because of HIS actions, he will have retired and be living on his millions, while many of the people HIS actions affected are in penury, and may be dead from suicide.

All this is why some of us have zero respect for government, and zero credibility in what they say. It's what happens when they make a habit of deceiving the public, year in, year out: people lose respect for them, and for the whole system. Too bad that this was a year that they needed public respect, but they squandered it ages ago.

m0therofdragons · 20/12/2020 11:47

The main issue that people miss is the number of patients with covid in hospitals meaning others won’t get the medical help they need. If you carry on spreading the virus you’re not only passing it on but you’re filming hospital beds so you’re loved ones can’t get safe care. The second wave is hitting hospitals in my area much harder. We have done call outs for staff to come in on days off to make it safe as staff numbers were to low due to sickness, we’ve not got any stroke beds available as the ward has an outbreak so those having a stroke will not be able to access the care we would like. This isn’t just about covid patients dying.

They are calling it that because they are medics, I guess, and have chosen to. Which you aren't.

He isn't alone. Thousands of people have been off work for months with the after effects. Just because it isn't you doesn't mean it isn't happening. Just because it's mild for you doesn't mean it is for everyone. Step out of your bubble and look at what it's doing. People are dying alone on ventilators.

If it is all down to Boris why are other countries in the same situation
earthyfire · 20/12/2020 11:53

Some people seem to enjoy being told what to do and how to live their lives. Others don't. I'm not judging anyone on the decisions they choose to make.

ForestNymph · 20/12/2020 11:54

@DecemberSun but post viral fatigue and CFS have always existed. Its not new. It can happen after the flu.

Did you miss the part where I said I have the same issue? Doesn't change the fact its mostly a mild illness. The mortality rate someone posted up thread is about 0.04%

TeensArghh · 20/12/2020 11:54

Exactly, 100%. I've spent the last decade campaigning against the tories, and the fucking irony of people saying I should "think of everyone else" right now when they all voted Tory is hilarious

In Wales Labour are in Government. There are 8 houses in my very small village with Covid at this moment. All ages from toddlers to the elderly are affected. Unfortunately we have just heard that 2 of these people died from Covid during the night. One is in his 60’s. The other is 42.

It is not a Tory thing!

Brieminewine · 20/12/2020 11:55

I'm entitled to expect NHS staff to be responsible

@Mooballs and how am I not acting responsibly? If you read my post I clearly say I am not seeing anyone over Christmas despite being entitled to in a tier 3 area as I don’t feel it’s worth the risk? I’ve actually no idea what your issue is with me Confused

year5teacher · 20/12/2020 11:57

Well done, that’s exactly what the government want you to do - blame the people rather than them.

Because you're NHS and you must be a hero,an angel. Promoting the greater good line with no individual thoughts , feelings or opinions.

You're not an individual anymore, you're the "poster child" for the propaganda machine.
