Are we going to end up with nothing, as a country? No businesses will be left and where will the money come from to fund us all?
Wuhan and other countries look practically back to normal, with no vaccine. Why are we having the vaccine but also being told social distancing etc won’t end? What’s the point?! What’s the plan...I feel like we’re all just drifting into something

The people have voted. There are too many sore losers about

You mean like you? who never moved on from 1975.

This country doesn't need 1000s of hi skilled jobs, it needs millions & the tories will never ever build council housing, just as they never wanted an NHS or universal education.

KarmaNoMore · 18/12/2020 22:39

Following on @jasjas1973’s post:
www.theguardian.com/politics/2020/jul/09/ministers-to-ditch-target-of-50-of-young-people-in-england-going-to-university

I find it amazing that the people who are the most vulnerable are most often than not the ones that choose/vote for the option that screws them the most in the shortest time.

KarmaNoMore · 18/12/2020 22:40

I bet you that is a prelude of cuts in student loans entitlement.

Cam2020 · 18/12/2020 22:43

You can't really trust any information that comes from China.

I just pray that once we are allowed to mix freely, people will be so desperate to socialise, what remains of the hospitality and entertainment business enjoys a major boom and others feel confident enough to open businesses and employ more people.

Andante57 · 18/12/2020 22:50

How is Wuhan back to normal? Do you believe a single thing the Chinese Gov put out?

This

LadyTiredWinterBottom2 · 18/12/2020 22:53

How do we know Wuhan is back to normal? I doubt we know the half of what has gone on in China.

Livelovebehappy · 18/12/2020 23:34

Bet you don’t get people in China sauntering into their local supermarket maskless claiming they can’t wear one because their glasses steam up. People in this country are in the main too self absorbed to do anything for the good of others. Wouldn’t matter if our government had instructed everyone to stay indoors for a period of time, as you’d still get half the population doing their own thing and refusing to adhere to any rules.

Guylan · 18/12/2020 23:43

@picklemewalnuts

The economy will reset, with different businesses. The old models weren't that sustainable.

The biggest worry for me is actually lack of tax income leading to a negative spiral of services. Like austerity but decades of it.

We're going to have some pretty tough choices- libraries, library buses and stuff. Lots of what we do will be farmed out to volunteer armies- local book swaps, local community kitchens delivering etc.

Public transport's a worry. Can't community organise that effectively. But escooters have arrived in my area.

Compelling argument in this short interview by this former trader and millionaire for a wealth tax on the assets of the super rich rather than austerity 2 imposed on workers.

Many assets are taxed at lower rates currently than income tax and many super wealthy have increased their wealth considerably during CoVid 19.

I'm a scientist

Can they add the maths one that explains numbers and relative risk

@Bathroom12345

a PP got me excited 75% off John Lewis clothing - the world is coming to an end. Well I went on and couldnt see anything at 75% at Sweaty Betty? There are a few 10-15% some beauty products but I wish people will stop dramatising things.

We will hopefully get the Oxford vaccine approved but some wont take it and presumably will take their chances with Cv19. I will take it when offered but that wont be until well into next year.

Yes, the media is doing its usual scaremongering and putting the fear of God into some people but we will get through it, holidays will return, schools will go back to normal and masks will become a thing of the past

OP works in John Lewis. Since they reopened in the summer they've been as busy as ever. It's not the clothing that makes the massive profits, they sell furniture beds and flooring costing thousands which they have no trouble selling
Ktktkt17 · 19/12/2020 07:46

Death can not be cured - everybody will die at some point
Covid survival rate is almost 98%

Lockdown will not work it only delays the infection rate,it was never meant to get rid of it totally just buy time for NHS

Virus will do what they do

If you are vulnerable then take responsibility for yourself and do what’s right for you

Stop waiting to be told what to do by BORIS AND CO

Let the rest of us live

  1. Nobody knows what's happening in China.
  2. The biggest difference we'll see is the gap between rich and poor becoming even more pronounced. We'd already seen a rise in food banks even before Covid, the pandemic had axacerbated it. But Jacob Rees Mogg and the like will be largely unaffected - indeed will most likely benefit.
  3. Large swathes of middle England will undoubtedly be poorer, but will probably have just about enough of a cushion to avert major catastrophe.
  4. As per no. 2 above, the North will be most hard hit, including all those who voted for the current government last December thinking Brexit will somehow solve their hardships.
  5. Come next election those same people will return to Labour in similar levels to those seen in 1997.

The UK will again remember that voting Tory only benefits the rich, and Brexit was only ever about the rich getting richer off the back of the suffering of millions of others. In short, it was the really bad idea that our experts warned us about.

It'll be painful. But every now and then a social and economical re-set happens throughout history. I am hoping that people will remember their humanity and stop Birchington at one another and help one another instead. Blitz spirit, if you like (I.e. the country forgot about its own poverty and helped shelter refugees from all over Europe who had been displaced by the Nazi regime).

That's my prediction op.

tttigress · 19/12/2020 08:19

I actually see Covid as just accelerating trends that were already there, such as working from home, education via an app, online shopping etc.

geekone · 19/12/2020 08:26

Yes it’s the correct question, how and how did China only lose 4000 ish people to this disease? Do you think maybe, just maybe, the facts and figures coming out of China are.... how can I put this, slightly amended????

Or you could go with the “much stricter lockdown” where we shoot anyone leaving their houses, but that doesn’t go down well in a “free” society.

I feel heartbroken for the business who might fail and I am doing everything I can to shop local and help where I can. If we all did that the business’s most at risk would have a better chance of survival.

userxx · 19/12/2020 08:35

Really? By being asked to stay in? That's worse than a war and the blitz etc? Really?

Can't work out if you're being sarcastic.

^This.

but we all support Johnson in cutting MW, wage freezes for the public sector but the wealthiest are left alone, they will never ever increase taxes on the rich.

Just up the road from me is a multi millionaire, his council tax on a 1m plus property is 2600, my modest, band D one is 1750.

The owner of the range gave his wife 350m to limit his tax liability, he is a billionaire.

Why is this? and why do we all just accept it? indeed support it! v soon someone on avg wage will come on here and post that the wealthiest pay all this tax....... and increases would be unfair.

MissMaple82 · 19/12/2020 08:54

The world has gone to shit and no it won't get better

Jumanji89 · 19/12/2020 09:12

Because the majority of people cant or wont follow basic guidelines in the UK. Looks at positive cases for instance. Around 80% of people who have tested positive have not followed isolation rules.

I know loads of people (tier 3) still going into peoples houses and mixing because they want to. In fact my friend who has disregarded rules since day 1 rang me yesterday in tears as she has tested positive and had been to her grandparents a couple of days before and not socially distanced. It is only now she has taken time to think about her actions.

ChristmasUserName2020 · 19/12/2020 09:50

We’ve been fine. NHS and MOD, both working from home. DH has started an Etsy business as a hobby and is making up to £500 a week. I agree that certain sectors are suffering but these are probably the ones who haven’t moved with the times anyway. Other sectors have flourished.

IcedPurple · 19/12/2020 09:53

How do restaurants, pubs, cinemas, theatres, hotels, cafes, gyms, leisure centres 'move with the times' when they've either been shut or forced to operate at an unprofitable level?

Your post oozes smug.

I think there are misguided aspirations, many people hope they will one day be in that position so some how think it's against their interests 🤷‍♀️

Many assets are taxed at lower rates currently than income tax and many super wealthy have increased their wealth considerably during CoVid 19

I'm against income tax rises for the majority & there is an argument that increasing it at the very top doesn't raise much. Imo it tends to be the younger generations who are paying income tax & they have less wealth in general & are having to pay more for education, housing, pensions, etc.

TheKeatingFive · 19/12/2020 09:59

I agree. It’s a disingenuous comment that dishonestly doesn’t engage with reality. People can be such arseholes.

My lovely little neighbourhood restaurant restaurant has shut for good. They were building business really well before Covid, they fought so hard to keep going, but they just couldn’t be profitable under the current circs. People’s dreams, hard work, dedication, all dashed.

Retiremental · 19/12/2020 10:00

I hope that one thing positive to come from this is that a review of the NHS means that all the ridiculous layers of middle management and management who haven’t been required to set foot in a clinical setting since March will be stripped away.

Yes, to tell people that they need to 'move with the times' is obnoxious.

Many businesss simply aren't profitable under Covid restrictions, even when allowed to be open. Are people who put years of love and effort into businesses not 'moving with the times' because they aren't selling tat on Etsy?

Glad the poster is 'fine' though. Bully for her.

Bull crap, the NHS & MOD have hardly moved with the times.

Also very unusual to set up a business & turn over 2k a month early on 🙄
