Are we going to end up with nothing, as a country? No businesses will be left and where will the money come from to fund us all?
Wuhan and other countries look practically back to normal, with no vaccine. Why are we having the vaccine but also being told social distancing etc won’t end? What’s the point?! What’s the plan...I feel like we’re all just drifting into something

Social distancing won’t end immediately because it will take time for the vaccine to be given to everyone, and in the meantime we can’t just return to normal because numbers will shoot up again. In a few months when the vaccine has been more fully implemented things will return to normal.

Don’t catastrophise about businesses. Some won’t survive, many will. It has been a very hard time but there’s light at the end of the tunnel now.

Already up to a million extra unemployed and figures don't show many people.

We are screwed- yes.

Just look at the sales- 75% off before Christmas at John Lewis (not advertised but there)
No-one is buying clothes- so those retailers are doomed.

We are heading into the largest recession ever known and worldwide.

Worriednow77 · 18/12/2020 09:31

@WillSantaBeComingToTown But the government are still continuing with this? What’s their plan?

OP posts:
Worriednow77 · 18/12/2020 09:32

And how is Wuhan back to normal with no vaccine?

OP posts:
Justcallmebebes · 18/12/2020 09:35

"And how is Wuhan back to normal with no vaccine"?

Because when they had lockdown they had a proper, no messing about lockdown. We had lockdown unless you wanted to go shopping, or for a walk or fancied a trip to Spain. That's the difference

PicsInRed · 18/12/2020 09:37

@Worriednow77

And how is Wuhan back to normal with no vaccine?
That is the correct question.
Redwinestillfine · 18/12/2020 09:40

Business will adapt. Many will not make it but that won't just be Covid. Brexit too. Life has changed. If Covid disappeared overnight we still wouldn't just go back to the way things were. That ship has sailed. There will be more working from home, less commuting, different types of businesses. Things will look up.

picklemewalnuts · 18/12/2020 09:41

The economy will reset, with different businesses. The old models weren't that sustainable.

The biggest worry for me is actually lack of tax income leading to a negative spiral of services. Like austerity but decades of it.

We're going to have some pretty tough choices- libraries, library buses and stuff. Lots of what we do will be farmed out to volunteer armies- local book swaps, local community kitchens delivering etc.

Public transport's a worry. Can't community organise that effectively. But escooters have arrived in my area.

madcatladyforever · 18/12/2020 09:41

It will never end here because people are being dicks, they won't have the vaccine, they keep going out and mixing with no social distancing. I dare not go go Christmas shopping.
One half of the staff at my hospital are at war with the other half because they refuse to have the vaccine.
It just never ends.

Thisismylife1 · 18/12/2020 09:44

Wuhan is back to normal because they had a proper track and trace system. The army were literally going from apartment block to block stopping people going out if they had the virus. We had a real opportunity to do this over the summer and get life back to normal . There should be blood on the hands of the government, instead even in the most restrictive tiers there are shops open and no penalties for breaching self isolation.

endofthelinefinally · 18/12/2020 09:45

I think the fall out from this, and a no deal brexit, will be worse than the 2nd world war.
Mass unemployment, food and medicine shortage and an extremely polarised society. We are seeing it already. Those at the top making a fortune and getting away with massive corruption, and, at the other end of the scale, increasing numbers homeless, without education, relying on food banks.
It is like watching a huge car crash in slow motion.
It will take a long, long time to come back from this.

perditaplum · 18/12/2020 09:45

I think you win the award for being the most pessimistic person on the Internet.

ZooKeeper19 · 18/12/2020 09:46

China as a dictatorship regime could and did lock people up for weeks. In the Uk people won't even wear a face mask on a crowded Tube and every second street idiot will say covid is a hoax and vaccines cause autism. In China this is not the case. You do as you are told or you end up in a camp till you die of one thing or another.

China has a despotic but dedicated government. UK has a circus of inept nepotistic thieves who do not give one toss about anything but their own dividends.

You think we are in it bad now. Wait for Brexit in Jan. Then the electorate will truly get what they voted for.

ThisShitDontMatter · 18/12/2020 09:46

And still we continue to fuck around!

Had we had closed everything proper lockdown style... No flying, nothing we would probs be done with this...back to normalish, businesses not being pissed about, schools less dangerous - its absolutely disgusting. Peoples mental health etc is being pushed to limits not known before and they are going to continue. The government are total cunts - making us feel bad about basic human connections of wanting to see eachother but they dont actually take any full lockdown responsibility. Only thing they are good at running is a fucking mock. Has anyone noticed that? Its our fault really...

Dont get me started Id be here all day.

thriftyhen · 18/12/2020 09:50

I run an online business and sales are phenomenal. My DH is an expert in his field and this is his busiest year ever. My eldest DS has taken on an extra job with a wine distributor and they are run off their feet. So while many businesses have suffered, others have boomed.

Buddytheelf85 · 18/12/2020 09:50

Yep. I’m scared. Without getting into the merits or otherwise of Brexit - surely any vaguely responsible government, Brexiteer or Remainer, would have sought to extend the transition period given the events of this year, rather than opting for crashing out with no deal during our worst recession since WW2?

Mustbe3ormorecharacters · 18/12/2020 09:51

No we aren’t going to lose everything as a country, these pessimistic posts pop up on mumsnet and are so tediously full of doom and gloom.

GroundAlmonds · 18/12/2020 09:55

@Worriednow77

And how is Wuhan back to normal with no vaccine?
Because when they say “lockdown”, they mean “we are coming to weld you into your apartment”.
Annabellesdad · 18/12/2020 09:56

I work in the cycling industry, and we import our own brand of E bikes, we sold a container full in less than 2 weeks. we haven't had lights in stock for 3 weeks because we cant restock fast enough, it has been a great year business wise.

MagicSummer · 18/12/2020 09:56

The thing is, in effect we are doing no better and no worse than most other countries in Europe, Look at Germany, Italy, Spain and now Sweden who were held up as having the best model!! It is NOT the Government's fault - do you honestly think things would have been different if another party had been in power? They just cannot win whatever they do - relying on the public to be sensible doesn't work because of the element which refuses to comply.

Worriednow77 · 18/12/2020 09:57

@perditaplum Not at all! Usually a very optimistic person, but..look around?

Stop being evil to people with obvious anxiety.

It won’t be that bad OP. I heard milk and aluminium foil are the likeliest shortages. It’s a bump. We will get over it and we will be okay. Just get a fortnight’s shipping in and sit tight. Smile

GroundAlmonds · 18/12/2020 09:58

Shopping, not shipping Grin

Worriednow77 · 18/12/2020 09:59

@thriftyhen That’s great for you, it really is. What about all the other businesses and people? I have many friends losing absolutely everything, it isn’t simple to just change their occupation or start up business again.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 18/12/2020 10:00

In June my friend put a post on fb saying Johnson and co should be tried for crimes against humanity. Although I’m really left wing, I didn’t really get it.

Now l do. Heedless, uncaring deaths. So many!

Let’s leave Covid to rampage through schools
Let’s lockdown too soft and too late
Let’s open shops 24/7 to ram in the crowds.
Let’s say one thing and then tell you to ignore it and do the opposite.

Proper lockdown and proper test and trace could have nailed it. We are an island. It should have been easy.
