To think it's fine to let the dog lick plates in the dishwasher?

Dog is only a puppy so it's only just become an issue but he likes to lick the dirty plates etc that I've put in the dishwasher.

It doesn't bother me at all, they are getting washed after all but DH tells me it's rather gross. Is it?!

I'd normally ask my mum this kind of thing as she's shit hot on manners but her dogs have always done a dishwasher pre wash!

I don't see the issue, but I bet there will be a pile on of people that disagree Grin

MissBaskinIfYoureNasty · 14/12/2020 17:13

I don't allow it, not because I'm squeamish or think its gross but because I don't want my dog getting into the routine of doing it. Sometimes the stuff left on the plates won't be dog friendly and its easier to just stop them doing it from the get go.

LethargicLumpOfLockdownLard · 14/12/2020 17:14

I'm assuming dishwashers get pretty hot, so probably fine. Do you wash your hands every time the dog kicks your fingers? I don't have dogs, but this would not bother me. I'm pretty lax though!

Soontobe60 · 14/12/2020 17:14

My dog used to do this 🤣🤣🤣.
Now my cats like to sit on the worktop above it when its on because its nice and warm.

Springersrock · 14/12/2020 17:14

My dog does the same

I do stop her, but it goes on a hot wash after so 🤷‍♀️

LethargicLumpOfLockdownLard · 14/12/2020 17:14

Licks, not kicks.

NeutralJanet · 14/12/2020 17:14

As long as you put it on a really hot wash it will be fine, just make sure there's nothing on the plates that might be harmful to the dog.

Soontobe60 · 14/12/2020 17:14

My dog also used to lick the shower doors clean when I got out of the shower!!

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 14/12/2020 17:15

I think it is fine. Our dog is sometimes known as the prewash cycle.

WishingForAnElfyXmas · 14/12/2020 17:15

I used to let my dog do this.

It is rather grim

Have you not got to be careful about wee bits of onion or garlic or other things that are on the toxic list?

If I have toast and butter I do let my pooch lick the "empty" plate before I wash it.

GoodbyePorpoiseSpit · 14/12/2020 17:16

I think it’s fine. Dishwashers get hot to kill germs so ... it’s fine, isn’t it??? (I don’t have a dog but I wouldn’t stop my imaginary dog from doing this)

Changethetoner · 14/12/2020 17:16

I hate it when my dog tries to lick the plates. I have learned to use my firmest voice -and tell her "Out!" and she leaves the kitchen. It really really annoys me for some reason, and is the one things I am strict about. The dog sits on the threshold of the door, looking sad. I don't mind her looking, but licking is too much.

HotSince63 · 14/12/2020 17:17

Our dog pesters us when we've finished dinner until one of us loads the dishwasher. Licking the dishes as they go in is one of the highlights of his day.

SimonJT · 14/12/2020 17:17

I don’t let mine do this, but thats because the food isn’t suitable for him to eat. The cat however does get in the dishwasher and give things a good lick, we have to triple check before turning it on or we’d have steames moggy.

HitthatroadJack · 14/12/2020 17:17

I wouldn't.

I am quite strict on teaching my dogs not to eat any food than their diner given by us (more or less successfully...)
plus a dog used to go in the dishwasher is a nightmare when you are taking them with friends or family.

Start as you mean to go on...
plus some of the food really is not recommended for dogs

3teens2cats · 14/12/2020 17:17

My dog tries to do this. I don't let him, more because I worry he would lick something not safe for him rather than the hygiene aspect. Dishwasher is hot enough to kill the germs.

unmarkedbythat · 14/12/2020 17:18

I don't know why this makes me feel so nauseous, as you say the plates are washed before anyone else uses them, but ugh, it just sounds gross to me. Then again I am not a dog person, and don't feel disgusted at the thought of a cat doing this!

Hangnailing · 14/12/2020 17:18

This is my dogs favourite parts of the day especially after a gravy dinner!
All our family dogs growing up and in my own house have done this. It’s a perk of being a dog.

TheMandalorian · 14/12/2020 17:19

My friends dog ate human poo (found on a woodland walk)once. Just saying. Dogs mouths are pretty disgusting.
I would also worry about the dog cutting its mouth on sharp knives and eating something toxic.
But on the flip side the dishwasher cycle would sterilise any germs from the dog.

BarkHoneyBark · 14/12/2020 17:19

We don't like it more because I'm worried about her licking something that isn't good for her - or a really buttery plate and getting the runs.

I'd rather she didn't get in the habit. She has enough questionable habits as it is.

Licking my knees when I get out of the shower being one of them. Bathroom door is a bit dodgy so she waits to hear the shower turn off then body barges the door.

Nore · 14/12/2020 17:19

I think that's absolutely revolting.

HotSince63 · 14/12/2020 17:20

It’s a perk of being a dog.

I don't know why but that's really tickled me Grin

MerchantOfVenom · 14/12/2020 17:20

It is grim, and I’m surprised to see so many people do it.

I hope no-one who comes to our house thinks we let our dog do it. And I am now wondering about other people’s houses...

We have a Labrador (greedy, prone to weight gain), so have to be shit hot on not letting her get into the habit of begging at the table because she knows she’ll get something. Licking plates in the dishwasher falls into the same category for me (as well as being grim).
