To think it's fine to let the dog lick plates in the dishwasher?

Dog is only a puppy so it's only just become an issue but he likes to lick the dirty plates etc that I've put in the dishwasher.

It doesn't bother me at all, they are getting washed after all but DH tells me it's rather gross. Is it?!

I'd normally ask my mum this kind of thing as she's shit hot on manners but her dogs have always done a dishwasher pre wash!

I wouldn’t let him because he will think it’s fine and go for plates on the table with your food on it. Exactly like my friends dog (turn your back for a second and his big nose is in your plate when you are eating...)

MrsLebowski · 14/12/2020 17:52

If they lick the plates thoroughly you won't even need to use the dishwasher.

SchrodingersImmigrant · 14/12/2020 17:53

@Allatseainthemidlands

My dogs have been caught eating fox poo, their own poo, vomit, decomposing fish, old nappies and anything else they can physically fit into their mouths. Do I let them near the dishwasher? No I do not.
Mine used to slide through these, rather than eat them🙈 Run, side roll slide through, run back and preferably try to cuddle up to the owner🤮
ForeverAintEnough · 14/12/2020 17:56

Mine does this. He puts his front paws up on the edge of the dishwasher when it’s open like he’s saying he’s ready for work! It’s adorable. It’s a poor mans game though unfortunately as we always clean our plates ourselves so there’s rarely much for him to lick! Sometimes I feel sorry for him and pop a spoon with some yoghurt on in for him to lick. My dishwasher does a 3 hour cycle on a high heat so I’m not worried about it from a cleanliness perspective

LST · 14/12/2020 17:56

My dog sometimes gets lucky. And the cat occasionally gets the milk if there is some left in a cereal bowl. We don't 'let' as such. We don't have a dishwasher either. Yet we're all still alive!

Allatseainthemidlands · 14/12/2020 17:56

Oh yes! All the love for a bit of poo rolling!!Grin

Randomtasks · 14/12/2020 17:57

To clarify I wouldn't put sharp knives pointing up or let him near anything toxic!

We absolutely do not do this with our dogs. But eating from plates at all is a hard no in this house. We limit the amount of human food that they consume, any human food is given from our hands or via their bowls, after the plates have been put out of sight. I think it’s a slippery slope to a dog begging for food, counter surfing or worse stealing from the table. Our dogs are sent to their bed while we eat, even when we stay at someone else’s house. They’re also sent to their beds or given a chew if they are in the way during prep or clean up. Our older one (3) knows this routine now and will get on her bed when she hears the oven door open/plates being put on the counter or also the Alexa timer going.

From a hygiene point of view, the water should get hot enough in the dishwasher to kill anything from the dog. From a safety point of view, you have to consider them cutting themselves in the dishwasher and eating something they shouldn’t.

If you start letting the puppy do this now, you’ll be doing it for the rest of their life. This includes when you visit other people’s houses, who may not be OK with your dog licking their plates. If you brought your dog to our house, which as dog owners we would encourage, I would be horrified if your dog licked my plates.

emilyfrost · 14/12/2020 17:58

YABVU and this is absolutely vile.

This is exactly why I won’t eat at anyone’s home who has a pet; they have a lack of hygiene and no boundaries because they live with the slobbering animals all the time.

ForeverAintEnough · 14/12/2020 18:01

@emilyfrost what is vile about it? The dishes are washed at a heat that sterilises them and kills any germs.

Tricerapops · 14/12/2020 18:01

I tend not to let DDog lick the plates in the dishwasher but will regularly give him one of the plates/bowls with leftovers before it goes in the dishwasher 🤷🏼‍♀️ I think I'm more worried he'll lick something he shouldn't in the dishwasher like a knife or something with onions.

GreekOddess · 14/12/2020 18:01

I agree with Nore.

I wouldn't allow the humans to do it either.

FangsForTheMemory · 14/12/2020 18:02

I think it's teaching the dog bad habits.

Spidey66 · 14/12/2020 18:02

I have a feeling it was something I posted earlier about my strong immunity that inspired this. :)

I can't get excited by the dog doing it. The plates get a thorough short wash and them steam dried. But I'm very relaxed on germs. I don't know know if I'd let her do it if I handwashed them though.

Spidey66 · 14/12/2020 18:02

Hot wash, not short one.

Strawberrycreamsundae · 14/12/2020 18:06

I totally agree @InTheNightWeWillWish
My SIL allows their dog to do this then runs a quick wash cycle so possibly nowhere near hot enough to kill bacteria etc.
Our dogs weren’t allowed anywhere near food, food prep , the dining table or the kitchen. It’s a revolting habit 🤢

Randomtasks · 14/12/2020 18:07

Oh @spidey66 please dont worry I haven't seen anything on here that made me think of it!

I just got a scolding from DH before we went of to work and left me sat here thinking about it!

That way lies insufferable dog who ends up hassling and whining and being a pest for human food whenever a meal is happening. Also - just bad for them! Loads of stuff that should never, ever be in their diet.

Cousin has a dog like this and really wishes they'd been tougher when he was a puppy - all the cute 'awww go on let him' has resulted in a dog who is a complete pain the backside.

She now realises that the lovely, gentle, well-mannered dog of her childhood didn't get that way by accident...

Alwaysandforeverhere · 14/12/2020 18:12

We used to have dogs and honestly the thought makes me feel ill. Plates are for humans not dogs.

If you wish to give any type of left over it belongs in their bowl where they know it’s then their food.

I’m never even having a drink at sils again now incase she lets her dog lick stuff.

Spidey66 · 14/12/2020 18:13

@Randomtasks
Ok!

I posted earlier on someone asking how to develop a strong immune system. I said mine is strong which i put down to me being relaxed about germs, and gave this as an example. :)

aquashiv · 14/12/2020 18:13

I'd be worried it might eat the dishwasher tablet

Piwlyfbicsly · 14/12/2020 18:14

@SchrodingersImmigrant
I get what you are saying, but it's not only about plates. It's about what's allowed and what's not. There must be firm boundaries of what a dog can and can't do, and the situation described is a lack of boundaries. It's up to owners though, what is allowed or not, but it's gross nonetheless and I would refuse to eat in the home that allows that. Not like I can actually have dinner in someone's home in covid times anyway lol

ThatIsNotMyUsername · 14/12/2020 18:14

We had friends of my parents who used to bring their kids. The younger daughter used to always eat out of the cats dish (cat food). I’m sure the cat felt the same! 😂

I told her parents once (‘She’s eating they cat food again!!!’) and they - oh my god - announced that if that’s what she wanted to do, then that’s what she ought to do...

notalwaysalondoner · 14/12/2020 18:15

My in laws do this. It’s absolutely revolting.

Dishwashers only go up to 82C for a start. Dogs eat poo and lick their arses. To let them near crockery even if it’s about to be washed is disgusting. I get it’s a hassle to train them not to but that’s part of being a dog owner.
