To think it's fine to let the dog lick plates in the dishwasher?

Dog is only a puppy so it's only just become an issue but he likes to lick the dirty plates etc that I've put in the dishwasher.

It doesn't bother me at all, they are getting washed after all but DH tells me it's rather gross. Is it?!

I'd normally ask my mum this kind of thing as she's shit hot on manners but her dogs have always done a dishwasher pre wash!

@An0n0n0n

It's so gross.

They lick their arses.

Imagine going to someone's house and eating from a plate that a dog has eaten from. You might think it's fine because they are getting clean but you wouldn't eat from a restaurant that let that happen, your dog isn't cleaner.

You do realise they are washed after a dog licks them, cutlery in restaurants have been licked by hundreds of people, some who don’t brush their teeth everyday, some by people with active coldsores. Dogs may lick their arses, lots of people lick arses as well, do you ask your hosts about their oral sex practices before you accept a cuppa?

@NoSquirrels

Eh, can't get worked up about this.

Our dog is not allowed to lick things that are actually in the dishwasher, but is a great help in the pre-wash cycle of gravy plates etc. She gets the ones we allow her to have, on the floor. Then we stack the dishwasher.

So she can't just randomly lick stuff that will hurt her or poison her, and it's all controlled by us what she gets and when. She has to sit and wait for it too.

If you think the stuff that comes out of your dishwasher is not clean enough, that's a separate issue you ought to deal with.

Brighterthansunflowers · 14/12/2020 18:31

No issue hygiene wise since the plates will get washed at high temperature afterwards, but I wouldn’t want the dog to get into the habit of it

WhereverIGoddamnLike · 14/12/2020 18:32

Your dog shouldnt be ingesting most of the things on your plates and "he's just a puppy" is exactly when you need to be training him. It's too late if you let him do it as a puppy because you wont be able to stop it when he is a grown dog.

Closetbeanmuncher · 14/12/2020 18:32

Dog licks its arsehole then licks your plates...

Mmm delicious.

SaintWilfred · 14/12/2020 18:32

Your dog, your dishes, your dishwasher, your choice Grin

Wingedharpy · 14/12/2020 18:33

Don't you lick your own plates?😊

LA115 · 14/12/2020 18:33

Disgusting 🤢

Ylvamoon · 14/12/2020 18:35

My in laws do this. It’s absolutely revolting Grin

Yes, humans should know better!!!

Closetbeanmuncher · 14/12/2020 18:36

Do you also let it lick your face?

MrsLebowski · 14/12/2020 18:37

Our dog calls it ‘ The Cabinet of Delights’ and doesn’t understand why we don’t all want to tuck in too😂

Haha I feel you are someone who does their dogs voice and comments on their opinion.

1forAll74 · 14/12/2020 18:37

I don't own a dishwasher, But sometimes any of my three cats will lick a plate or dish if I don't wash it immediatley. They all get fed twice a day, but if they smell something they fancy on a plate, they will be tempted to lick away. I am not bothered about this, I am from an era, when it was commonplace for people to put almost empty plates down for the dogs to lick after a meal.

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 14/12/2020 18:37

The funny thing really is how humans have been able to survive being on the same planet as dogs and cats at all, what with the germs. But then, almost all conditions and diseases which afflict humans are not carried by dogs but by other humans, so perhaps the surprising thing is that humans have survived the existence of other humans.

Also how dogs were able to survive on raw meat and scraps from the human table for millennia -- dogfood in tins was only invented as an idea less than a hundred years ago, I think, and kibble for dogs (which is not necessarily good for their kidneys) not until the 1950s.

GrouchyKiwi · 14/12/2020 18:39

I let mine lick some plates before they go in the dishwasher (I put them on the floor for her), but otherwise she's not allowed to for two reasons.

  1. There might be something she can't have on the plates (though as a large breed it wouldn't really be enough to be an issue).

  2. I don't want her to get into the habit of licking things in the dishwasher in case she does it to the clean stuff.

PizzaForOne · 14/12/2020 18:40

It's not gross but not exactly good behaviour from a dog so I'd put an end to it. Only a matter of time before a gravy soaked nose ends up staining something or getting on the trousers of a guest

exLtEveDallas · 14/12/2020 18:40

Many years ago, looking after my friends dog for the weekend, I had to pull her out of the dishwasher after turning my back when loading it - friend didn’t have one, so the dog thought it was fair game! (These days I doubt even her head would fit, let alone her body)

We don’t do this in general, it’s not a good idea from a training POV, but MuttDogs favourite meal in the whole world is Lasagne, so whenever I make it, I make enough for the dog to have her own portion and all the crunchy bits from the dish. She’s been known to sit gnawing at the dish for 30 minutes and doesn’t leave a single speck behind!

I’m not worried from a hygiene POV - we let the dog lick all wounds etc, so a bit of dog spit doesn’t bother me at all.

Ltdannygreen · 14/12/2020 18:43

Our dog used to do that, what’s the issue when they are getting washed anyway, dogs just giving them a pre wash 😊 and most people that have a problem probably let thier dogs lick their face so thier opinion don’t count for much. 😁

MiriamMargo · 14/12/2020 18:44

I love my dog, he sleeps with us on the bed, but I dont think I could let him lick plates

BoJoHoNo · 14/12/2020 18:47

My dog is raw fed but I wouldn't want him licking crockery that had for example onions or chocolate on them. Even if it didn't kill him, he'd likely get the squits! He's very food motivated, so left to his own devices he would get to and lick any plates that were left out. He's been taught he's not meant to though, so that moment of hesitation where he's thinking whether he can get away with it has prevented a few expensive vets visits.

Wheresmykimchi · 14/12/2020 18:49

This is animal abuse. Do you not feed your dog ? Is he resorting to eating food off the dishes?

(I'm joking , by the way) Grin

WitchesBritchesPumpkinPants · 14/12/2020 18:49

Nope- it's revolting.

I love dogs, but I don't want them licking plates etc.

Plus it's potentially dangerous & anti social at other people's houses. Your dog would be welcome here, but they'd sharp get told 'no' if they started doing this

Diva66 · 14/12/2020 18:51

Eeuw! That’s disgusting, a very bad habit to let your puppy get into. Dog dishes and human dishes should be kept completely separate.

Lampenme · 14/12/2020 18:52

Would rather this than when people let dogs lick their faces. It turns my stomach every time I see it. Absolutely vomit worthy

Ltdannygreen · 14/12/2020 18:53

@MrsLebowski

If they lick the plates thoroughly you won't even need to use the dishwasher.
This made me chuckle as me and my mum always joke about this... also that there will be no print left by the time the dogs finished 😂
LisaLee333 · 14/12/2020 18:53

I know someone who got salmonella poisoning from mixing pet plates with human plates, but heyyyy, crack on. Salmonella is just sooooo lovely to have!

Oh yeah YABU @Randomtasks It's fucking foul letting your animals anywhere near stuff you EAT from, and mixing the crockery and stuff.

WTF is wrong with some people? Such low hygiene standards. Probably expect the NHS to look after you if you get ill though eh? Although, this type probably thinks they're entitled to the care, coz they pay N.I. contributions! Hmm

Huge relief to see two thirds of people think YABU. More people with common sense than not!
