To think it's fine to let the dog lick plates in the dishwasher?

Dog is only a puppy so it's only just become an issue but he likes to lick the dirty plates etc that I've put in the dishwasher.

It doesn't bother me at all, they are getting washed after all but DH tells me it's rather gross. Is it?!

I'd normally ask my mum this kind of thing as she's shit hot on manners but her dogs have always done a dishwasher pre wash!

Yuck! No thanks!

Id also be worried the dog would lick a knife that was due to be washed and hurt itself as well.

Bathroom12345 · 14/12/2020 17:32

They all seem to do this. We are on our third dog and we tell our dog to sit well away from the dishwasher whilst someone is stacking otherwise they end up having a sly lick.

I dont like it because if you had say curry or something spicy it would upset their tummy. Having said that our dog has a cast iron stomach!

Billericaydicky · 14/12/2020 17:33

Our dog is allowed to lick plates before they go in the dishwasher. She's not allowed to lick stuff in the dishwasher. I would never ever allow her to lick things that are to be hand washed.

Ultimateblends · 14/12/2020 17:33

Our shepard does it. Doesn't bother me at all!

Chanjer · 14/12/2020 17:33

Wouldn't bother me but the biggest disruption to my life from the plague is that I don't eat food dropped on the floor anymore so I'm probably not the one to ask

Piwlyfbicsly · 14/12/2020 17:33

It's really gross, even disgusting. Sorry, it's my personal perception. Where do we draw a line? And I did have a dog when I was a child/teen who I absolutely loved, so not exactly a dog hater.

cologne4711 · 14/12/2020 17:35

@Nore

I think that's absolutely revolting.
Me too. Bleugh. I hope dog-friendly pubs and cafes don't think this is ok!

Mind you, I know cats are much cleaner than dogs but I'm not keen on them sitting on worktops and counters either.

Bluntness100 · 14/12/2020 17:35

I don’t have an issue with it from a hygiene perspective but I would not let my dog do this, firstly you don’t want them doing it at other people’s homes, and many people will find it gross if they see them doing it in hours

So as he’s a puppy teach him no.

Gardeniaofdelights · 14/12/2020 17:37

My mum’s dogs do this - the pup pre-wash! I honestly don’t care at all. They’re about to be washed!

SchrodingersImmigrant · 14/12/2020 17:38

@bluebluezoo possibly🤔 He just rolled up in a back. We learned quickly to check before trying to push the tray back and close it😂

I would say the line would be drawn at the point when it cannot be washed adequately after?
Chesneyhawkes1 · 14/12/2020 17:40

Mine do this

HomeSliceKnowsBest · 14/12/2020 17:41

I've eaten the odd thing out of DDog's bowl so YANBU.

ScalpHelp · 14/12/2020 17:41

@MissBaskinIfYoureNasty

I don't allow it, not because I'm squeamish or think its gross but because I don't want my dog getting into the routine of doing it. Sometimes the stuff left on the plates won't be dog friendly and its easier to just stop them doing it from the get go.
This is a really good post. Everything I wanted to say (aside from that the act itself is gross!)

If you make this a habit, god knows what your dog will Hoover up next! Something that may make it poorly perhaps?

Luckyrabbitfoot · 14/12/2020 17:41

That is fucking rank.

MitziK · 14/12/2020 17:42

Not an issue in itself, as it's before the plates get really hot and washed.

However, he could be licking/eating things that aren't good for dogs or could even be poisonous to him. And you don't want him to cut his tongue on a knife or have to clean dog hair out of the filter. So I'd stop it because of that.

Cleverpolly3 · 14/12/2020 17:43

@SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius

I think it is fine. Our dog is sometimes known as the prewash cycle.
Snap She especially loves being on duty when it’s Sunday dinner or Mac and cheese 😂
Phrowzunn · 14/12/2020 17:44

Oh God no. BOAK!

MustardMitt · 14/12/2020 17:44

I’m sure from a germs perspective it’s fine, but as a non-animal lover it grosses me out.

I just let my dog have a couple of the plates on the floor. She doesn’t actually go in the dishwasher She wouldn’t fit Grin
PolarnOPirate · 14/12/2020 17:46

My mum lets her dog do this, it really revolts me but I am not a dog person.

Fluffycloudland77 · 14/12/2020 17:46

It’s not the hygiene it’s the safety aspect for the dog.

PolarnOPirate · 14/12/2020 17:48

It’s the sound of it more than anything 🤢

CaptainMyCaptain · 14/12/2020 17:49

I think the dishes would get sterilised in the dish washer but I wouldn't want the dog to cut itself on anything sharp or eat something it shouldn't.

Allatseainthemidlands · 14/12/2020 17:50

My dogs have been caught eating fox poo, their own poo, vomit, decomposing fish, old nappies and anything else they can physically fit into their mouths. Do I let them near the dishwasher? No I do not.
