Booked a click and collect with sainsburys for 23rd. Just went online to update order with something and the turkey was listed as not available even though it was when I booked it over a week ago!!! Crisis if this happens just b4 christmas. Phoned sainsbos and they tell me yes turkey not reserved even if ordered in advance. They can't guarantee I get one as click and collect not the same as ordering one in store. Anyone else been in this blissful ignorance of thinking you had christmas sorted....?

The click and collect orders change all the time because it's about what's in stock. Have you not seen the staff going round getting orders ready. They're not accessing secret stock, just whatever is on the shelves.

Rhubarbcrumblerules · 13/12/2020 22:58

Nothing on any supermarket click and collect (or even order for delivery) is reserved. Its all done on availaiblity at the time the shopping is picked from the store (or warehouse), done earlier on the day of delivery. nothing is selected prior to that and stored for each customer, where on earth would they put it all?

Ordering special Christmas items instore is totally different to an on-line order

Nottherealslimshady · 13/12/2020 22:59

I guess if they reserved it you could then remove it from your basket and its wasted.

Runnerduck34 · 13/12/2020 23:00

Thats rubbish, thank god you found out now!
I have heard of this before with tesco.
I have reserved with ocado, historically they did reserve stock for you but recently they have not been as good so I hope it will be ok !

MarcelineMissouri · 13/12/2020 23:01

That just not how it works unfortunately. You order one and if they have it you’ll get it. Much like going shopping - if it’s there you can buy it. That’s always been the case for supermarket deliveries.

ChocolateTea · 13/12/2020 23:01

This is why I buy the meat from a butchers, and everything else on click and collect. You can make the best of a bad roast with anything substituted. But bad meat or no meat sucks.

Our local butchers is still taking orders, until the 16th. Try yours tomorrow.

amulree · 13/12/2020 23:03

Thanks chocolateTea that's what I'm going to try tomorrow. Was shocked they didn't even notify me....

I do click and collect all the time and I know this is how it works normally. But as it was a special 'christmas slot' I guess I assumed that booking a turkey would work the same as in store....apparently not. I can go to butchers and see this week but I feel sorry for people who have to shield and are just left gambling....

shocks me how many people dont understand how online grocery shopping works

Waveysnail · 13/12/2020 23:08

Surely its the same a delivery all year round. They pick what they have on the shelves and instore on that day. If you want a turkey reserved then you usually have to order specially instore or at the butchers.

Tesco do this all the time. Every time I go in to add something to the basket I get a message saying something else is unavailable and will be removed.
GlummyMcGlummerson · 13/12/2020 23:11

This is why I won't do click and collect around Christmas!

Laffie · 13/12/2020 23:42

Years ago, I had this with Tesco delivery, I held the poor driver to ransom while I was on the phone to the shop, they delivered a turkey for free the next day Grin

fiorentina · 14/12/2020 00:01

Waitrose online the turkey is from the food to order section so it is a specific order that the will then deliver as part of the order, not off the shelf as with the other items.

Doodlepip23 · 14/12/2020 00:27

Supermarket deliveries/click and collect give you what they have available at that time, off
the shelf. If you need something specific, like a turkey, you would need to order it specifically as a food to order collection item. It would be specifically reserved for you. I don’t know if Sainsbury’s do this. I have ordered from Morrison’s.

snookercue · 14/12/2020 00:30

Was shocked they didn't even notify me....

Notify you of what? It's another 10 days until your delivery, they will get more turkeys before then.

Deelish75 · 14/12/2020 00:51

It’s only Food to Order that is reserved - I think that service closes on the 15/16th but you may not get a slot now or those turkeys may have sold old - worth having a look though.

cabbageking · 14/12/2020 03:35

I believe there is a turkey shortage. I would have a back up plan.

Thighdentitycrisis · 14/12/2020 04:12

I made a Sainsbury’s order for a turkey online and paid a deposit with the balance to pay on collection

No idea to this could happen

Thighdentitycrisis · 14/12/2020 04:13

@Deelish75
Is that what I have reserved? Hope so

Yes that’s what you should do and it will be fine. That’s not what the OP has done.
AlternativePerspective · 14/12/2020 04:17

Turkey’s overrated anyway. Just buy a chicken and save yourself about £60. Win win.

Simplyunacceptable · 14/12/2020 06:23

Yeah it’s always worked this way. I’ve added things to my Christmas shop a few times and had to remove about 5 items already because they’re now unavailable. Purposely ordered it for the 22nd so we have the 23rd to pick up any unavailable items.

LAlady · 14/12/2020 06:25

I've ordered a turkey from Sainsbury just over a week ago on click and collect. Only item in my basket as had to pay a £20 deposit.

Skipsurvey · 14/12/2020 06:30

i noticed this earlier in the year, ah pasta, but no not available
