Booked a click and collect with sainsburys for 23rd. Just went online to update order with something and the turkey was listed as not available even though it was when I booked it over a week ago!!! Crisis if this happens just b4 christmas. Phoned sainsbos and they tell me yes turkey not reserved even if ordered in advance. They can't guarantee I get one as click and collect not the same as ordering one in store. Anyone else been in this blissful ignorance of thinking you had christmas sorted....?

this is no different to any other item on click and collect.
It is only about what is on the store on the day.

I have one ordered for 23rd, and I'll order some things ahead of time in this week's slot, but yes, I think I'll need to go in store after the order arrives on 23rd!

I got my turkey, my ham, pigs in blankets all in October. All frozen this year, I just didn't want to take the chance with an online Christmas order.

I have to do online due to risk but I get my dairy delivered separately from our local dairy.
So I am hoping for vegetables in our Christmas shop. Everything else is covered.

There's no way I'd be relying on a home delivery for Christmas. As PP said, it's more like a wish list!

I don't think it's unreasonable to expect the Christmas slots to be 'special' or 'different'. I knew things weren't reserved, but I would ho[e for more than a 'standard' service over Christmas. One year I had a goose ordered for the week before Christmas and Tesco rang me up to tell me it wasn't available and discuss substitution options.

Doesn’t surprise me as I do all my shopping online and very often stuff drops out of my basket randomly , what annoys me is that they don’t automatically put it back in the basket if it comes back in stock so the onus is on me to check the night before my shop is due . I’ve done a Christmas order at M and S on top of my usual Tesco shop .

@amulree

Thanks chocolateTea that's what I'm going to try tomorrow. Was shocked they didn't even notify me....
Why would they notify you? Confused

Nothing has changed; the system works the same. You get the item if it’s available and a turkey likely won’t be.

This is why I get a frozen one at the end of November. He’s been chilling (pun intended) the the bottom of my freezer at -18c for a few weeks now. There will be more demand this year as people are not gathering, so where 3 families might have been together to eat the same large turkey, 3 turkeys will now be needed if they don’t get together. I have all the bits in my freezer and cupboard ready I just need fresh stuff.

Agree lady hedgehog. I shop clikc and collect with them all year. I know it's not normal to reserve items all year round. It's not normal to do that in store either.......but turkeys are different in store at christmas. Why aren't they different on click and collect too?

It may come back in stock or get substituted. But I'd probably not be able to risk it either. Went to find our meat in person and put in freezer

but turkeys are different in store at christmas. Why aren't they different on click and collect too?

Because when people order online through click and collect they update and change their baskets all the time, meaning supermarkets never have any real idea of the numbers of items they need—including turkeys.

So they can’t just order in the number of turkeys through click and collect; they’d be left with loads left over.

Hence they have a specific ordering system for turkeys, and don’t rely on random click and collect baskets.

I'm shocked you didn't know this. And why are you getting upset now? It could totally change in 10 days when you get your order.

Or it could be completely worse and you'll get nothing that you've ordered. It's the gamble you take in afraid, and plenty of other people are doing the same. I've been buying Christmas food for a few weeks now to avoid the last minute dash others do and make sure I have stuff.
