Booked a click and collect with sainsburys for 23rd. Just went online to update order with something and the turkey was listed as not available even though it was when I booked it over a week ago!!! Crisis if this happens just b4 christmas. Phoned sainsbos and they tell me yes turkey not reserved even if ordered in advance. They can't guarantee I get one as click and collect not the same as ordering one in store. Anyone else been in this blissful ignorance of thinking you had christmas sorted....?

Sainsburys food to order can be booked online but for a store pick up, I have booked all my meat and puddings and paid a £20 deposit with the remainder payable on collection.

Roselilly36 · 14/12/2020 07:40

@AlternativePerspective I totally agree with you there! We have chicken also, much prefer it.

snookercue · 14/12/2020 07:48

@climeybarlie

Yes, but not online that you can have delivered to home.

OP wasn't talking about food delivery d to her home though.

SchadenfreudePersonified · 14/12/2020 07:51

If you tick that you'll accept a substitution, you will get something, even if not your turkey.

My friend's DD ordered a huge turkey for a big family Christmas last year, and they substituted3 large chickens, which was more than enough to feed the number of people there (possibly more of a faff to cook, though).

MotherExtraordinaire · 14/12/2020 08:00

@amulree

I do click and collect all the time and I know this is how it works normally. But as it was a special 'christmas slot' I guess I assumed that booking a turkey would work the same as in store....apparently not. I can go to butchers and see this week but I feel sorry for people who have to shield and are just left gambling....
This is part of the reason that the Christmas order thing that's not click and collect is so popular, but out of financial reach for many when you look at the prices. (I looked and it would have cost me 4 times as much). But that is directly ordered in advance. Think tbh anyone who thought they would reserve their turkey was slightly naive given this! 🤔
Frieswithanythin · 14/12/2020 08:07

I never knew this, just as well I read this thread. I put turkey and gammon in my basket. I think I’ll just buy these before the 23rd, delivery date.

Lurkingforawhile · 14/12/2020 08:12

Yes, it’s a real gamble especially if you have a slot close to Xmas. We know that we might end up without the sprouts, parsnips etc on our order on the 23rd. We had ordered a frozen turkey but it didn’t come with our Tesco order last week so bought one for Waitrose instead.

Serendipity79 · 14/12/2020 08:21

I got a Tesco delivery last night - bearing in mind I'm using Delivery Saver purely because our Tesco has big signs up asking us to use it if we can afford to so they can alleviate the numbers of people in store, but on an order of 45 items, 19 were missing. Makes it kind of useless when I'll have to go now anyway.

Unfortunately this does seem to happen near Xmas, even my milk was missing last night as its just what they have on the shelves at the time. I've pre ordered my meat from the butchers and am collecting it on the 22nd but have had to pay a deposit as you'd expect. If there is anything you absolutely have to have for Xmas, unfortunately it may mean a trip out to buy it rather than relying on home delivery :(

listsandbudgets · 14/12/2020 08:27

I pre-ordered ours from the butchers about 10 days ago and paid a deposit. He said it was lucky I'd ordered early as he only had 22 left - I don't know how many he normally sells but he sounded worried that he was going to get a lot of people trying to order and he'd have to say no :(

Good luck OP, hopefully it will be showing in stock nearer the time. If it gets desperate you could try venturing to M&S at about lunchtime on Christmas eve - my friend got her turkey for £7.50 last year though she had couple of chickens in reserve just in case.

climeybarlie · 14/12/2020 08:39

Ok, I should have said 'they do not offer a book in advance and your food is reserved service where you can have it delivered to home or for click and collect- you have to go in and get your reserved food yourself.' Unlike Tescos and Asda. I don't want to go in a store at all, hence not using Sainsburys at Christmas.

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 14/12/2020 08:43

I think I'd always be quite circumspect about doing an online order for Christmas essentials. You just never know.

I once ordered lots of stuff for DD's birthday party, as part of a much bigger general food shop. Virtually none of the party-required items were delivered. I was beyond cross.

Aprilx · 14/12/2020 08:46

Online shopping is not reserving, I have always had things become unavailable especially if booked well in advance. I would not have assumed any different because it is a 23rd December delivery. In fact I decided against a delivery that close to Christmas as I thought there was a risk half of my items would be missing.

PetalsFall · 14/12/2020 08:52

YABU for using the term Sainsbos

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 14/12/2020 08:58

Lots of turkeys have been slaughtered due to avian flu

You may wish to consider a backup plan....

middleager · 14/12/2020 09:01

I'm not sure you can rely on much anymore.

It occurred to me that if my other DC catches Covid like my other DC did (tier 3, thick with school infections) then we won't be able to even go and get our click and collect on the 21st.

So since that realisation when we were all housebound with DC's Covid infection, I have been collecting Christmas food.

Eckhart · 14/12/2020 09:08

I hope they don't end up providing you with an alternative, and you end up with a packet of bacon or something...

Thighdentitycrisis · 14/12/2020 09:10

So I have done “food to order “ not click and collect

MaverickDanger · 14/12/2020 09:24

Check your emails @Thighdentitycrisis - for my normal click & collect or delivery, my email subject line starts with “your order”.

For Food to Order (where things are specifically reserved and you have paid a deposit), it will say Sainsbury’s Food to Order in the subject line.

cdtaylornats · 14/12/2020 09:30

The fair way to do it is allow you to reserve your turkey but you are not allowed to not buy it then. Your non-refundable deposit would be the full price of the turkey.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 14/12/2020 09:35

Looks as if there might well be a turkey shortage this year, because of avian flu.
I stopped ordering years ago - I just go to M&S at the crack of dawn, so as to be there when they open (usually 7 am) on the 23rd, to grab a fresh, free range one.

Not doable for everybody, I know, but has always worked for us.

TheSockMonster · 14/12/2020 09:42

I was ‘lucky’ enough to get a Christmas Eve delivery slot about 5 or 6 years ago. Perhaps I was stupidly naive but I didn’t realise it was more of a wish list than an actual order.

I was pretty shocked when it turned up and nearly everything was absent or substituted.

Fortunately it was just close family and we managed to laugh and make the best of it!

plumpootle · 14/12/2020 09:48

I've had terrible customer service from Sainsbury's and would never use them now.

ftm202020 · 14/12/2020 09:49

This happened to me 3 times in a row with Sainsburys and my Christmas online shop so I don't do it anymore.

Viviennemary · 14/12/2020 10:19

They should have made it clearer. But don't really blame them with all the messing about people do with their orders.

CorianderQueen · 14/12/2020 10:24

There are loads at Lidl
