Booked a click and collect with sainsburys for 23rd. Just went online to update order with something and the turkey was listed as not available even though it was when I booked it over a week ago!!! Crisis if this happens just b4 christmas. Phoned sainsbos and they tell me yes turkey not reserved even if ordered in advance. They can't guarantee I get one as click and collect not the same as ordering one in store. Anyone else been in this blissful ignorance of thinking you had christmas sorted....?

Could it possibly be.. because they are not in stock YET? Fresh Turkeys are probably still gobbling around the turkey yard awaiting slaughter closer to Christmas?

MaverickDanger · 14/12/2020 06:38

As @Deelish75 has pointed out, only the Food to Order is guaranteed.

Those who have paid a £20 deposit, that is a Food to Order order and not the normal groceries Click and Collect.

Skipsurvey · 14/12/2020 06:39

you need to place an order with a butcher, or take your chances

juneybean · 14/12/2020 06:40

Mine always does this but it always arrives on the day! Like a pp said it's showing the current stock, they will have a lot more deliveries before xmas.

speakout · 14/12/2020 06:44

I wouldn;t expect anything in a click and collect to be guaranteed- even a turkey at christmas time.
The whole system doesn;t change just because it's christmas.

CatchingWind · 14/12/2020 06:50

@LAlady

I've ordered a turkey from Sainsbury just over a week ago on click and collect. Only item in my basket as had to pay a £20 deposit.
Buying online for a click and collect delivery isn't the same as ordering and reserving so you may not get a turkey if there are none available at the time your shopping is picked.
KittenCalledBob · 14/12/2020 06:50

One year I got a delivery on Christmas Eve, not including a turkey (ordered separately from butcher) and the delivery driver was having to tell everyone that there were no turkeys available. I did not envy him his job that night!

Exactly. I've booked a delivery for the 23rd and am fully expecting to have to go out for bits and pieces that are missing.
Backbee · 14/12/2020 06:54

The food to order service is guaranteed I think, but yes annoyingly click and collect changes all of the time.

Skipsurvey · 14/12/2020 06:58

dont have yur delivery booked for christmas eve, save christmas eve or even 23rd, for your last minute shopping which may include items not sent in your grocery order

ThatsMySantaHisBeardIsSoFluffy · 14/12/2020 06:58

As everyone else has said, to actually reserve your turkey you needed to use the Food to Order service, as you would at any supermarket.

Our Christmas delivery is booked for 22nd, first thing. I'm collecting my pre-orders on the same day so will also pick anything up that's missing / short dated.

Cattybumbum · 14/12/2020 07:05

I'm surprised at this OP.
When I used to order from Tesco, all the festive food was reserved and couldn't be changed after the 15th but everything else was as usual picked on the day and down to luck.
It wouldn't occur to me to think the turkey wasn't reserved.

Woohoowoowoo · 14/12/2020 07:08

This is why I've ordered my Christmas delivery for this Friday. Gives me a week to find anything that's missing.

BabyMoonPie · 14/12/2020 07:08

Thats why our Christmas dinner turkey is in our freezer now. We have our shopping delivered and the last 2 years the turkey we've ordered hasn't been available meaning we've had to have a last minute trip to another supermarket. Our shopping is being delivered on the 23rd and I didn't want to have to go into a supermarket on the 23 or 24 this year. Bitter experience has taught be to buy as much as possible in advance. I hope you get sorted

JohnMiddleNameRedactedSwanson · 14/12/2020 07:11

Click and collect is just like going to the supermarket yourself, except someone else does the picking and packing. If what you want isn’t on the shelf then that’s that. If you want a guaranteed turkey you have to do a separate ‘food to order’.

junglepie · 14/12/2020 07:12

yep, I always use the food to order service for my Christmas order. Wouldnt fancy the stress of a normal click and collect or delivery order and not knowing what might turn up!

climeybarlie · 14/12/2020 07:14

The date is irrelevant - Sainsburys do not have a 'festive food to order online' category and so stock is not reserved. Your turkey has just the same status as a packet of polos or a pint of milk, it depends what is on the shelf. The fact your order is for 23rd December makes no difference. I always shop with Sainsburys, but BECAUSE THEY DO NOT OFFER a 'reserve your food in advance' option online I have orders with Asda and Tesco instead.

dudsville · 14/12/2020 07:16

All that means is they didn't have the Turkey on the day you updated your order. Their system isn't efficient. When you update your order the night before you have the best knowledge of what you're actually likely to get.

BendingSpoons · 14/12/2020 07:16

I can order special Christmas food on my ASDA order. You are committed to it (can't remove it later) and they reserve it for you. It's a different section of the website and is a limited selection.

They do actually, many have said this. You can order and pay a deposit as I have done with my turkey and other festive food.
climeybarlie · 14/12/2020 07:22

Yes, but not online that you can have delivered to home.

My boyfriend's farm slaughtered theirs last week. It's cheaper to keep them in a massive freezer than alive for the last couple of weeks apparently Poor turkeys
LunaLoveFood · 14/12/2020 07:27

Our turkey was substituted one year. Thankfully it was for a bigger one (that only just got.in the oven!)

Deelish75 · 14/12/2020 07:30

@Thighdentitycrisis

With Food to Order you pay a deposit and then go in store to collect and pay the balance. Double Triple check your order before paying they’re usually rushed off their feet and mistakes do happen (didn’t help when they had someone clearly hungover dealing with it Hmm).

Wrong they do.

On the website it’s under the section Food to Order. You order online, you book a slot for either 22, 23, or 24 Dec, pay a deposit and then go in store to collect and pay balance.
