To be unreasonably annoyed at Royals at the pantomime

Gigheimer · 11/12/2020 23:24

I post knowing I’m totally unreasonable (probably) and you’ll all shout but I got both angry and sad and rage at seeing the press stories of Kate and Wills at the pantomime in the West End.

I’m normally a fan, and of course I don’t begrudge those cute kids a pantomime.

But my kids don’t get that this year, no Santa experiences, no pantomime no fucking nothing because we are tier 3 and if our local pub or theatre ever open again I’ll die of shock.

But we are in the North so who gives a fuck right?

I just have the absolute unreasonable fury tonight.

It’s W&K’s habit of thanking people for doing their jobs that has been winding me up.

Kate had the nerve to thank a hospital cleaner for cleaning her (the cleaner’s) workplace the other day. Then she told her “Yours is the most important job in the hospital”. Patronising doesn’t come close.

Toddlerteaplease · 12/12/2020 07:55

@Gigheimer are you in Nottingham or Derby by any chance?!

Parkmama · 12/12/2020 08:00

Oh for gods sake, their trip to see that pantomime was a PR exercise in boosting the theatre and the arts, to create confidence and to encourage those that can, to attend. Everything they do is to create awareness, not to rub salt in the wound for those that can't. It's so small minded to perceive it that way. In fact, to come on MN ranting about it to create a thread of negativity in an already negative situation for many, achieves nothing. YABU OP!

Are you Carole Middleton? Grin

I think tax payers are entitled to an opinion on whether the Royals are getting the tone wrong in a time of national crisis, aren’t they? It’s not the biggest issue in the world but it’s legitimate to comment. You’re allowed a different opinion.

It’s a very odd over reaction to call other people small minded for having an opinion that differs from yours.

Fieldofyellowflowers · 12/12/2020 08:08

It doesn't bother me, to be honest. It must have been lively for the actors, who have been struggling for work and not being able to put on shows, to entertain royals.

Meowchickameowmeow · 12/12/2020 08:09

I feel sorry for them having to sit through pantomime shite and have to pretend to enjoy it.

Onceuponatimethen · 12/12/2020 08:09

I actually felt the same op

We can’t go even though we are in tier 2 as my kids haven’t seen grandparents for months. Grandparents live in tier three

Our term finished early and we are lucky that we can do 14 days self isolating to be safe for them when we visit, but that means no social stuff for my kids before the 25th at all.

Benjispruce2 · 12/12/2020 08:12

I felt the same. Give those seats to children in need.

Plsv87 · 12/12/2020 08:13

You are so right to be angry. The North have been treated appallingly (I live in London). I hope this is remembered at the next GE.

cologne4711 · 12/12/2020 08:13

It's when I read threads like this when I realise how much FOMO middle class mummies have and project on their kids.

As for the hate on London, until recently, the infection rates were not too bad there. They've now worsened, so there's a chance it will be put in Tier 3, or some of the boroughs will be.

As for events happening, I was out for a run on Tuesday evening and there was a local football match on. Streets were quite busy with people walking to the ground. Are you all going to get stroppy about that, too? Or are football matches ok because they are not "Christmassy"?

Benjispruce2 · 12/12/2020 08:14

Yes it was for key worker children and that’s great but the royals shouldn’t have been there, very out of touch with public feeling. I’m quite shocked they weren’t advised against.

Iris5543 · 12/12/2020 08:14

Another reason to abolish the monarchy!

They are so out of touch with the real world...travelling around on the royal train ( the most expensive form of travel) running off to second homes. Attending the theatre.

These muppets cost the public purse millions! Get rid and spend it on the NHS/ food banks/ homeless. Real people with real needs.

How has the North been treated appallingly?
Laiste · 12/12/2020 08:24

I'm on the fence.

The potential for them to 'do good' (highlight good causes, raise awareness ect) is massive.

However - every time they do something it pisses off as many people as it pleases/benefits. And i can see why.

If they all buggered off into obscurity they'd still be very rich people, with all the huge unearned privilege that inherited wealth brings. Could they they still do the same 'good works' in total anonymity if they wanted to? Would they try? Why would it be better for them to do it without photos?

Would we prefer to see them slope off and just sit on their arses and enjoy what they own without any attempts at doing good? Just so we didn't have to see them?

What about all the other rich/famous celebs who (arguably) do very little to earn their wealth? Do we hate them too? If not why not?

These are the questions which i find fascinating and are what keep me on the fence!

lollipoprainbow · 12/12/2020 08:24

I agree. To see three over privileged children being taken out for a treat when us mere mortals children aren't allowed to enjoy any such niceties is insensitive. Maybe they could have attended privately.

nosswith · 12/12/2020 08:29

There are parts of the north that should not be in tier 3. Most of Devon outside Plymouth and Exeter in tier 1. Parts of east London and Essex (those where all school children are offered tests) that should be in tier 3, though not where the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge were.

YANBU to be angry about the government and its response to Covid 19, but don't just be angry about a trip to the theatre by members of the Royal Family.

Eleganz · 12/12/2020 08:29

I think the issue is that their presence anywhere is just so totally unneccesary. They don't need to be at a panto for key workers, let the key workers have their seats. A video message payed before the panto would have been sufficient.

Sadly this pandemic has exposed that Britain is truly a divided society (or at least England), by class, by race, by geography. We have royals trotting around the country when we can't even get Covid testing for our kids in schools in the north.

Iris5543 · 12/12/2020 08:32

laiste the difference is WE pay for these celebrities.

Yes the children are cute, but so are all the children queuing at food banks.

Look at how grubby Andrew is, what have his daughters given us? Yet we pay millions for them to get married??

The government can’t afford to extend free school meals for children who will not eat.

We need a referendum.

sonicbook · 12/12/2020 08:34

It's an absolute disgrace to have them swanning about as if the rules don't apply.

I also agree that it's completely shit that their kids get to go out to panto and almost all others don't. Petty? Yes but I really can't help it.

Keyworkers don't want to be a supported by millionaires who are oh so much more jmportant than them fannying about for photo opportunities. Better pay, conditions and any other tangible real benefit might be more appropriate.

Eleganz · 12/12/2020 08:34

How has the North been treated appallingly?

Longer periods in higher restrictions than the South damaging businesses. Lack of financial support (just ask Manchester). No lateral flow testing for school children in northern tier 3 areas but lateral flow testing for school children in tier 2 London.

@Iris5543 yes!!!! 👌🏻

movingonup20 · 12/12/2020 08:35

There's a panto here, due to open Thursday if we come out if tier 3 ( expected, our rate is 1/3 of London!)

ineedaholidaynow · 12/12/2020 08:37

Was that panto on for one night only? I know it might have to close next week if it goes into Tier 3. There were other children there too not just the Royals.

Theatres are open near me so I assume children are going to pantos here too.

movingonup20 · 12/12/2020 08:37

@Gigheimer snap, our rate hasn't gone above 150 and is currently 52 but we are tier bloody 3!
