To be unreasonably annoyed at Royals at the pantomime

548 replies

Gigheimer · 11/12/2020 23:24

I post knowing I’m totally unreasonable (probably) and you’ll all shout but I got both angry and sad and rage at seeing the press stories of Kate and Wills at the pantomime in the West End.

I’m normally a fan, and of course I don’t begrudge those cute kids a pantomime.

But my kids don’t get that this year, no Santa experiences, no pantomime no fucking nothing because we are tier 3 and if our local pub or theatre ever open again I’ll die of shock.

But we are in the North so who gives a fuck right?

I just have the absolute unreasonable fury tonight.

And it's also really important to support the arts and theatre, the epicentre of theatre being in London

Bagadverts · 12/12/2020 00:35

I don’t care about the tier thing. By that logic no-one including key workers should enjoy panto because the whole country is not in a position to do so (or have similar key workers performances).

On the royals or any other celebrities- a live video link zoom thanks. An extra set of key workers that could have enjoyed the pantomime.

Tellmetruth4 · 12/12/2020 00:37

I’d much rather be sat in my house on a Thursday night than watch panto anyway. Had to watch a colleague in one a few years ago. It felt like it went on for five hours -‘he’s behind you!’. Our faces were hurting from fake grinning. It just wouldn’t fucking end. Luckily they were serving drinks. DH and I swore we’d never go again. DD went to one with the school and said it was proper shite too (not in those words obvs). Don’t get the love for them at all but each to their own.

GlummyMcGlummerson · 12/12/2020 00:37

@PicsInRed

Their courtiers are bizarrely out of touch with what's going on the ground and how the Royals are being perceived.

Arranging for them to attend a live Panto (yes, with a few keyworkers at a distance) whilst every other child in the country cant so much as do a school Christmas play, let alone Panto - what are they thinking?

My kids did a school Christmas play in their bubbles. Though I can't imagine they'd even notice if they didn't!

It always makes me laugh when I see the wHAt aboUT thE cHilDRen attitude because if I've learnt one thing this year it's that children are far more resilient than adults.

GlummyMcGlummerson · 12/12/2020 00:39

@TaraRhu

They also went on tour around the country. We'd be charged if we went home from London to Scotland but it's ok for William and Kate. How bad can lockdown be fit them with an entire palace to spread out in, a host of facilities and staff. I'd rather they set an example and stayed at home.
Because they're technically working. So the rules aren't actually different for them as people have been able to travel for work for some time now
GlummyMcGlummerson · 12/12/2020 00:40

@Alternista

I’ve been slack jawed at them all week tbh. Get off the fucking royal train, stop going round the country spreading God knows what and just STAY THE FUCK AT HOME like we’re all having to. Go and thank people in six months when there’s less chance of killing them.
What a completely melodramatic post
Gigheimer · 12/12/2020 00:41

YANBU OP, covid has meant we've all had moments like that this year. Most of the time you get on with it but sometimes the severe shitness tips you over and you become irrationally angry at innocent things.brew

The pants is on in our town. Tier 2 . I think they were doing their job and if you get a chance to do things you have to take it. It is rough for many kids this year without their usual events. But those who have a chance to go to any theatre should even if it is not fair to those who can’t, simply it is better to keep as many people employed and venues open as possible so they will still be there next year, hopes for more people to enjoy

@Tellmetruth4

‘Fucking hell, another bitter spiteful thread wishing ill on londoners for having the temerity to not be northern’

I know. This anti-London thing started off just being banter then got weirder and now seems stalker level obsessive. It’s also fuelled by papers like The Guardian. They love a good ‘anti-London’ or ‘escaping London’ story as it fires up people like the OP. They had yet another article this week from a northerner (who probably had more money growing up than most kids in Tower Hamlets) who started off by saying how much better her home town was than any in the south because northerners are the Country’s Friendliest People TM. It then quickly descended in to slagging off London. It was embarrassing and clearly designed to froth up people who have some seriously strange beliefs about London and it’s inhabitants.

You see thread after thread of people slagging off London, with people almost getting RSI writing out how much they hate it whether or not London was even relevant to the thread. It’s bonkers.

I agree, the London bashing is embarrassing. And I live in Yorkshire!

FWIW I adore London and would move in a heartbeat if ExH didn't live so far away

Gigheimer · 12/12/2020 00:45

And where did I say I hate Londoners? I don’t. You don’t make the rules. I don’t want anyone in the shit.

I hate the bullshit unfair elitist government. They just happen to favour London.

A couple of years ago I had to endure 2 hours of Bobby Davro making innuendos that were way too close to the bone - like "To get there Gretel, you go down to the rear at the end...just as long as you're not in my rear end" Shock- one of those moments where you think how the fuck did my life come to this.
PickettWhiteFences · 12/12/2020 00:48

YANBU OP, I am not putting it down to a London thing but it just shows out of touch the Royal Family are, its just rubbing it in our face. Like many because of money / restrictions Christmas this year is a write off yet the RF quite happily splash photos of the Cambridges off to a fancy Panto in London and them travelling up and down the countryside.

Normally I would not mind but there are so many families struggling, it just seems a slap in the face to the working and middle class.

Secondly what have the Cambridges done all year, considering all engagements have been cancelled? Daft zoom calls from their castles, travelling round the bloody countryside and trips to the panto.

Gosh, I haven't seen a capitalised 'stay the fuck at home' comment for ages

Still funny.

YABU.
Oh yes you are....Wink

tempester28 · 12/12/2020 00:53

The reality is that if London is favoured by the government it is because it is the Capital city, seat of the Government and economically it is very significant.

wincarwoo · 12/12/2020 00:54

Kids only care of you make them. Just play it all down. They adapt.

They might favour us but by & large we don’t like them. It gets on your tits a bit when you’re constantly blamed for the Torys when most of us hate them.

Gigheimer · 12/12/2020 00:57

I’m honestly not blaming you. I adore London and Londoners. Jesus half my trapped feeling is because I used to be there once a week.

It’s just like suddenly places are a different world from the tiny restricted one I live in. It fucks with my head and for what?

I was cringing just reading that so goodness knows how you coped watching it live for 2 hours!!! Like I said much better to be in my warm house in my slippers with a glass of red.

Gigheimer · 12/12/2020 01:00

To be honest I’ve only been to the Panto once in the last 5 years... but that’s NOT THE POINT now I can’t...

GlummyMcGlummerson · 12/12/2020 01:01

OP, like a PP said you've reached a point we've all been to at some point - it's called Peaked Pissed-Offness at Government Incompetency And Probably Directing It At Whatever Has Annoyed Me Today.

Go to bed me dear, get some rest and just be thankful that you didn't have to feign enjoyment at a panto, hoping your kids don't have tantrums, while the world's eyes were on you ThanksWine

Don’t worry lots of Southern children are not getting a pantomime either Hmm

hermitzero · 12/12/2020 01:05

I don't think they were there to enjoy the pantomime with their kids. Key workers and their families were invited to the performance. They were there to thank them, which I think is part of their work. The reason why they brought with their kids is because key workers were with their families so I think it makes more sense to go there with their kids. From my point of view, personally, if I had been invited there as parents, I might have hesitated to go there with three kids because of them getting the virus. I think they are royal but at the same time human beings with same fear as anyone else so I don't think them atrending panto is enviable either. Their visit was from a good intention.
