To be unreasonably annoyed at Royals at the pantomime

Gigheimer · 11/12/2020 23:24

I post knowing I’m totally unreasonable (probably) and you’ll all shout but I got both angry and sad and rage at seeing the press stories of Kate and Wills at the pantomime in the West End.

I’m normally a fan, and of course I don’t begrudge those cute kids a pantomime.

But my kids don’t get that this year, no Santa experiences, no pantomime no fucking nothing because we are tier 3 and if our local pub or theatre ever open again I’ll die of shock.

But we are in the North so who gives a fuck right?

I just have the absolute unreasonable fury tonight.

@SFHJ

Im NE tier 3 and we are still going to Santa... and I believe panto is still going on in Newcastle.
Me too. Our panto is starting on the 19th and they're deciding if we stay in tier 3 on the 16th so I'm keeping everything crossed!
Girlwhowearsglasses · 12/12/2020 08:41

Yabu
Worked in the industry and know how absolutely on its knees it is. Theatre needs publicity and I think that's what they're trying to do in the only way royals can.

Jealous -absolutely Envy but I will be there at the theate with my kids the moment budget and COVID allows - if the theatres are still there.

Eleganz · 12/12/2020 08:43

@girlwhowearsglasses

Do you think that the theatre industry is struggling due to lack of publicity?

sonicbook · 12/12/2020 08:43

I'm the way only royals can?

Genuinely think that's the biggest lot of tripe ever.

@Iris5543

laiste the difference is WE pay for these celebrities.

Yes the children are cute, but so are all the children queuing at food banks.

Look at how grubby Andrew is, what have his daughters given us? Yet we pay millions for them to get married??

The government can’t afford to extend free school meals for children who will not eat.

We need a referendum.

This.
TillyTopper · 12/12/2020 08:49

Personally I've never been to a Panto but I can't get het up about Kate and William taking their kids there. It's given the actors a chance to be on stage which is great. Some places are live streaming and the local one here is doing a few shows which I see people have been to and loved.

ineedaholidaynow · 12/12/2020 08:49

Many people possibly don’t realise theatres are open at the moment.

Tyranttoddler · 12/12/2020 08:50

@Eleganz

How has the North been treated appallingly?

Longer periods in higher restrictions than the South damaging businesses. Lack of financial support (just ask Manchester). No lateral flow testing for school children in northern tier 3 areas but lateral flow testing for school children in tier 2 London.

Thank you for saying this.

That might not work out well......

FindHungrySamurai · 12/12/2020 08:52

There are no rules preventing anyone in tier 1 or 2, which is (currently) the majority of the English population, taking their DC to the panto. I personally wouldn’t because I’m in semi-quarantine before visiting DF for Christmas, and the audience singing and shouting involved in a panto strikes me as unsafe, but the Cambridges apparently aren’t concerned and by being seen to attend in person with their DC they’re supporting the arts and publicising this as a safe and acceptable activity at a time when the theatres badly need the money.

And lots of people genuinely love seeing the royal DC grow up and going through their little milestones. Scorned by MN but the tabloids wouldn’t do those endless (slightly emetic) picture specials if there weren’t a big appetite for them - it does give people pleasure.

lavenderlou · 12/12/2020 08:53

I think you're being a bit unreasonable here. They are patrons of the arts and should show support to the industry which is so threatened. I'm taking my DC to the panto tomorrow. We've been very careful about going anywhere so far but this is our local theatre. My DC have performed there, we visit the panto every year and I want to try to help them keep afloat. There is social distancing in place and I'll wear my mask throughout.

HOkieCOkie · 12/12/2020 08:55

I have to agree! I’m a big fan of the royals but that left a sour taste. It just seems a bit werid to put a Panto on for the most privileged ppl in the country when so many ppl won’t be doing much of anything this year.

No hate to Kate and will tho, those just doing their bit as public figures.

Misssugarplum12764 · 12/12/2020 08:56

At first glance at photos/headlines I thought the same. Then I read into it. It was put on to thank key workers (which they have been doing very well throughout on their SM and does seem genuine). My actor brother also says that anything reminds the general public that theatres exist is good too! It does expose the whole N/S divide though; our local city theatre had a socially distanced panto which has had to be cancelled! We got refunds (and I hadn’t told the kids just in case it didn’t happen!) but I’m sad for them.

SchrodingersImmigrant · 12/12/2020 08:58

I am up North and we have panto. YABU

MrsMariaReynolds · 12/12/2020 09:00

YABU, Op. Colour me surprised this isn't a moan about their lack of mask-wearing on the red carpet.

London will be stuck in Tier 3 in a matter of days anyway. Besides, I would have thought that being unable to go to a panto this year would have been a welcomed bonus of Covid lockdowns. It certainly would be for me. Cannot stand pantos.

ineedaholidaynow · 12/12/2020 09:02

Have just googled the production they went to see (subject to going into Tier 3) it is on until January, so not a one off production.

AlwaysLatte · 12/12/2020 09:02

I didn't know there was panto this year!

WillSantaBeComingToTown · 12/12/2020 09:04

@ineedaholidaynow

Many people possibly don’t realise theatres are open at the moment.
£195 for the cheapest seat at the one I looked at last week, booked well in advance- full setting range available.

So they are open for some!

EdithWeston · 12/12/2020 09:05

The pants wasn't put on especially for them.

So much has been cancelled. Theatres really are in danger of going bust. But some performances are still happening. And this one was put on especially for key workers, and the Duke made a speech in which he said

""You include community workers, volunteers, teachers, NHS staff, representatives from the emergency services and military, researchers working on the vaccine, people helping the homeless, those manning vital call centres, and staff from a wide range of frontline charities - to name but a few"
"You have given your absolute all this year"

I don't think the organisers were in any way wrong to invite a high profile person to make an address at an event such as this. Perhaps not everyone on the audience would have the Cambridges as top of the list of backers, but I think they would all recognise what it means to have major Royal in attendance

Redwinestillfine · 12/12/2020 09:05

There's pantos on in Manchester.... It's not like this was the only one...

GlacindaTheTroll · 12/12/2020 09:07

@AlwaysLatte

I didn't know there was panto this year!
This was a special one for keyworkers and their families, and the Cambridges were there as the Duike was giving the speech of thanks.

It would be a bit curmudgeonly not to invite his family as well!

Iris5543 · 12/12/2020 09:08

^^
The British taxpayers should get a vote in how tens of millions of pounds of OUR money is spent.

dottiedodah · 12/12/2020 09:08

I quite like W&K but feel its a little bit rich seeing as no one else has this opportunity.My own DC loved the Panto when younger , and my 2 little nephews are being denied the chance to go ,along with all the other little ones .Also why were they touring the Country by train? Seemed to rub salt into the wounds that most of us are too scared to go on Public Transport anyway and dont have an entire Toot Toot to ourselves FFS!

SchrodingersImmigrant · 12/12/2020 09:09

No more referendums!
