To be unreasonably annoyed at Royals at the pantomime

Gigheimer · 11/12/2020 23:24

I post knowing I’m totally unreasonable (probably) and you’ll all shout but I got both angry and sad and rage at seeing the press stories of Kate and Wills at the pantomime in the West End.

I’m normally a fan, and of course I don’t begrudge those cute kids a pantomime.

But my kids don’t get that this year, no Santa experiences, no pantomime no fucking nothing because we are tier 3 and if our local pub or theatre ever open again I’ll die of shock.

But we are in the North so who gives a fuck right?

I just have the absolute unreasonable fury tonight.

As an aside, those angry that the Royals get to go to nice places - what do you actually expect their engagement to be like? A shift in a sweat shop while they self flagellate?

I've just seen the compilation footage of them on the Royal Train Tour. Like it or not, their tours bring attention to and shine a light on a lot of good work. It was lovely to see the people they visited and what they got up to, and all nice and social distanced

tempester28 · 12/12/2020 01:10

Yes you are just fed up which is perfectly justifiable. In two years time you will start a thread about poor Kate, forced to endure the panto, made to board an old train that slowly chuffs along from one end of the country to the other.

Gigheimer · 12/12/2020 01:11

OP, like a PP said you've reached a point we've all been to at some point - it's called Peaked Pissed-Offness at Government Incompetency And Probably Directing It At Whatever Has Annoyed Me Today.

😂😂😂 This has cheered me up no end, I did say I was being unreasonable. My unreasonableness knows no bounds right now. I cried outside Asda for an hour yesterday as my mask made me sneeze.

@PicsInRed

Their courtiers are bizarrely out of touch with what's going on the ground and how the Royals are being perceived.

Arranging for them to attend a live Panto (yes, with a few keyworkers at a distance) whilst every other child in the country cant so much as do a school Christmas play, let alone Panto - what are they thinking?

But they can.

Our federation primary schools are off to the pantomime on Thurs.

And guidance to schools said plays and nativities with parents watching (socially distanced, no households mixing, kids in bubbles only, masks) was okay. Although left it to last minute to tell schools, by which point most had made alternative plans.

Blame Covid, blame government for ballsing up info to schools.

DameLucy · 12/12/2020 01:27

Tier 3 and in the North too. Totally empathise. It’s so miserable up here right now 😢

veeeeh · 12/12/2020 01:28

They are so bland and irrelevant, who fkn cares anymore?

This is just a publicity stunt to keep them in the news IMO. Then off they go back to the hovel in Norfolk to cry in their soup.

Yes, you are correct, they are fkn useless, Covid has shown us this.

blueshoes · 12/12/2020 01:44

Everything K&W do is annoying and reeks of unearned privilege. It always amazes me seeing them and their twee family on the news next to real world problems how surreal and irrelevant their lives are.

I suppose they help some people forget their problems.

Time2change2 · 12/12/2020 01:45

I usually love the royals but this is tone deaf.
In tier 3 here and it’s absolutely miserable. Everything I tried to book over Xmas has been cancelled. Kids isolating everywhere, in fact with a few kids in my household attending school it will be a miracle if someone isn’t isolating all over the xmas break and not allowed to leave the House let alone go to a bloody panto.
My kids would have absolutely loved to do that this year. Feels like everything fun has been stripped away. No nativities for them this year either.
Those who are saying YABU are you actually in a tier 3 where everything remotely enjoyable indoor is closed?

dasherandvixen · 12/12/2020 01:46

We're a very ordinary London family and we're taking DD to see a theatre show tomorrow, and to do a Santa's Grotto as well. It's certainly not just for the privileged few (we're on quite a low income but paid for it as a treat since we've not spent much on days out or a holiday this year). Quite a few family theatre shows/pantos being shown in London and probably in other Tier1/2 areas - it's something available to many families. I can understand being annoyed at being in Tier 3 (we will probably move to Tier 3 next week and I will be miserable because we've booked other events, which will get cancelled). Plus we do live in a tiny flat with no garden, and have to put up with terrible pollution which is what we Londoners have to put up with to be able to live somewhere with easier access to the arts.

ItsAlwaysSunnyOnMN · 12/12/2020 01:49

I was quite glad to see Kate and Will at the Panto

They too have to suffer through a fun night watching a Panto

Whattheactual20201 · 12/12/2020 02:09

I don’t know but we have the same west end performers doing in to DC school next week which confused me. Parents are not allowed to step in the playground at all 🤷‍♀️

MindyStClaire · 12/12/2020 02:27

YANBU OP. I thought it was completely tone deaf when I saw.

Not in England, so no Tier- or London-based bitterness here, and I fucking hate panto. But most keyworkers, and non keyworkers, and non workers, aren't getting anywhere near a night out at the theatre (even panto!) this year.

WhatWouldYouDoWhatWouldJesusDo · 12/12/2020 02:31

Tbh I'm sick of seeing these extremely privileged children getting huge perks bestowed upon them........why not have the children who have faced huge adversity have the treat of a pantomime........and the Attenborough thing pissed me off too. I wonder how many kids from deprived backgrounds that work really hard to claw themselves out of the life they're living have met the great man himself and are gifted a rare fossil to remember the occasion.

It's ridiculous.

Anothertiredmother · 12/12/2020 02:48

They were trying to show support for the theatre and entertainment industry from what I can gather. What’s wrong with that?

Anothertiredmother · 12/12/2020 02:50

@blueshoes

But would you be saying the same if it was Harry and Meghan?
TheWichitaWineOne · 12/12/2020 02:50

Just in case there was any sliver of doubt, I think COVID has shown the royal family to about relevant and essential to a functioning society as I would be to a space shuttle mission.

The royal family has absolutely nothing meaningful to offer a post-COVID, post-Brexit country, and the problems that we will face for decades will highlight that more with every passing year.

I don't think YABU, OP.

AldiAisleofCrap · 12/12/2020 03:22

There are drive through pantos even in tier three areas open to anyone with a car. @Gigheimer

Mummyoflittledragon · 12/12/2020 04:32

It’s not the kid’s fault and the parents were entitled to go being invited. You’re letting off steam though, which is good. And have recognised your mental health is taking a bashing. This isn’t about the royals. This is about how you feel. I’m also in tier 3. It is a godsend dd is older and doesn’t want to do grottos and indoor activities, is happy to go to the shops in a mask and FaceTime her friends or take the dogs for a walk together with one of them.

Orcadianrythyms · 12/12/2020 07:18

They're an absolute disgrace. The nonsense of the train tour, the amount of unnecessary faff getting these people to pretend they've any interest in the public. Those seats could have gone to key workers.
Most of the time I just think they're all ridiculous and people who consider them worth fawning over equally ridiculous but this year they've highlighted time and time again they are above the rules. Don't even get me started on his idiot father parking himself at (one of his) homes at Balmoral, whilst positive with Covid.
Spend your money on relieving child poverty rather than trotting your privilege out for all to see - then you'd be something we can proud of instead of ashamed. And for pities sake buy those kids some decent clothes.

HallFloor · 12/12/2020 07:22

Everythig they've done in the last few days seems so misguided and they usually get the PR so right.

TooOldforBouncyCastles · 12/12/2020 07:36

You have my sympathy OP. It must be really hard being Tier 3 for so long.

I think the royal family are completely out of step with many of the public. Many would love to travel around the country even for ‘work’ and the light relief of being entertained and meeting people is desperately needed by many. Flaunting it whilst people struggle under restrictions is just odd

Disfordarkchocolate · 12/12/2020 07:40

I'm in Tier 3 and plenty of local places are doing Christmas trails and Santa walks etc. It's lovely to see the community support young children.

There is a panto in Newcastle this year, the empty seats have been paid for my National Lottery funding to keep theatres going.

I loved seeing the pictures, such lovely children.

OverTheRainbow88 · 12/12/2020 07:45

Yes I hear ya!

We are also in tier 3; however, lots of our outdoor zoos etc have opened and some seem to be making a huge effort to make it more Christmassy!

We also drive around in the eve looking at peoples Christmas trees and lights.

Our city did a Bristol sings, where lots of people
Stood outside on their door step and sang Christmas carols which was fun.

But yes it’s shite

BonnieDundee · 12/12/2020 07:46

I agree OP. Trip round the country and now the panto. Something that most of.us.cant.do. then they pull out the "thanking the key workers" card which means they can apparently do what they.want Xmas Hmm

but dont forget you're the mean one because we're all in this together

wowfudge · 12/12/2020 07:50

@PineconeOfDoom

It was an official engagement at a performance for key workers Hmm

I thinks it’s a bit pathetic to get jealous about that.

Exactly this. I hate most panto tbh although the one they went to is probably better than most. They're supporting the arts and entertainment - live theatre has really suffered this year.

We're in the north west and there are alternatives available. For example there's a drive in panto at the Trafford Centre this year, shown on a huge outdoor screen.
