To be unreasonably annoyed at Royals at the pantomime

Gigheimer · 11/12/2020 23:24

I post knowing I’m totally unreasonable (probably) and you’ll all shout but I got both angry and sad and rage at seeing the press stories of Kate and Wills at the pantomime in the West End.

I’m normally a fan, and of course I don’t begrudge those cute kids a pantomime.

But my kids don’t get that this year, no Santa experiences, no pantomime no fucking nothing because we are tier 3 and if our local pub or theatre ever open again I’ll die of shock.

But we are in the North so who gives a fuck right?

I just have the absolute unreasonable fury tonight.

OP posts:
SFHJ · 11/12/2020 23:52

Im NE tier 3 and we are still going to Santa... and I believe panto is still going on in Newcastle.

Tellmetruth4 · 11/12/2020 23:53

Panto in Newcastle is fine. It’s only a massive problem if it’s shown in London. The root of all evil.

Peregrina · 11/12/2020 23:55

Let's not pretend that they live in Norfolk, when they send their children to a day school in London. Norfolk is a second home. The Royals as a whole haven't acquitted themselves well this year bunking off to second homes, while the rest of us have had to manage with what we have got.

ComDummings · 11/12/2020 23:55

I understand where you’re coming from.

minipie · 11/12/2020 23:56

Yeah you’ve lost me OP, the Cambridges going to a key worker panto has nothing to do with any discrepancy between the treatment of north and south.

Figure out what you’re raging about.

saraclara · 11/12/2020 23:57

AIBU....to be unreasonably annoyed at...

I think you might have answered your own question there.

lurker101 · 11/12/2020 23:58

@PicsInRed many theatres in tier 1 and 2 areas are open, so there’s no reason (other than cost I guess) why other kids not in tier 3 areas need miss out. In fact I imagine the Arts industry would love for people to book tickets

Here’s a list of some that are on in London (other locations available)

Ivalueloyaltyaboveallelse · 12/12/2020 00:00

I think YABU, It was a performance to thank key workers. Will and Kate were just trying to show their appreciation and to support panto. I honestly do feel for all the children and parents out there that can not attend these special events, however there are children out there whom won’t be getting anything for Christmas as their parents have lost their jobs, let alone attend panto.
We are very fortunate as pantomime is still going ahead where I live and we are off to Chessington tomorrow (before they enter tier 3) for a nights stay to see Father Christmas.

Til next week.

Fucking hell, another bitter spiteful thread wishing ill on londoners for having the temerity to not be northern.

Honestly, isn't it so fucking wonderful how hard times bring everyone together. Jesus Christ, as if everything isn't hard enough.

lurker101 · 12/12/2020 00:06

@PicsInRed yes but there will still be theatres in tier 1 and tier 2 areas open, there are theatres in areas other than London. I just haven’t been to many of them. The point is you’re being so over dramatic saying no other British kids can go. Many can and will, granted fewer than other years but such is life this year.

Nipoleon · 12/12/2020 00:08

Or course it looks bad! Where I am, absolutely nothing has been on for kids for ages. We are banned from leaving our area. Yet the Royals can do something pretty much no other children can do - enjoy a Christmas pantomime. Their lives are stuffed full of privilege already. It really doesn't sit right with me.

CountreeGurl · 12/12/2020 00:08

It's the inequality of the panto that bothers you and not their entirely undeserved wealth

tinselfest · 12/12/2020 00:09

Last time I looked, it wasn't the Royals who decided to put 'The North' into tier 3. The virus doesn't spread itself. It needs people to do that.

DioneTheDiabolist · 12/12/2020 00:10

YANBU OP, covid has meant we've all had moments like that this year. Most of the time you get on with it but sometimes the severe shitness tips you over and you become irrationally angry at innocent things.Brew

SantasBritchesSpelleas · 12/12/2020 00:11

I'm a staunch republican and loathe the privileges heaped on the Royal Family. But, pick your battles. There are far, far more obscene excesses in which these layabouts indulge. Yes, this is an annoying micro-aggression, but we should focus on challenging their many behaviours that are unashamedly indefensible.

PicsInRed · 12/12/2020 00:16

It's that, it's the traipsing all over the country during lockdown and it's the wittering on about how marvellous it was for their kids to have such an enormous, kick ass garden to play in over lockdown. Meanwhile in the tower blocks...Hmm

They're so utterly tone deaf, they're not fit for purpose.

Quaagars · 12/12/2020 00:23

YABU.
I'm tier 3 too and fed up of everything being shut here when others are open.
Why would I begrudge others going to the pantomime just because we aren't able to anymore?
What, everyone be miserable just because it's crap here to "even" it up?
That way lies bitterness and shittiness, and can't be bothered with that. it's sure fire way to make yourself even more miserable.

DumplingsAndStew · 12/12/2020 00:24

@MythicalBiologicalFennel

YANBU, it's insensitive

‘Fucking hell, another bitter spiteful thread wishing ill on londoners for having the temerity to not be northern’

I know. This anti-London thing started off just being banter then got weirder and now seems stalker level obsessive. It’s also fuelled by papers like The Guardian. They love a good ‘anti-London’ or ‘escaping London’ story as it fires up people like the OP. They had yet another article this week from a northerner (who probably had more money growing up than most kids in Tower Hamlets) who started off by saying how much better her home town was than any in the south because northerners are the Country’s Friendliest People TM. It then quickly descended in to slagging off London. It was embarrassing and clearly designed to froth up people who have some seriously strange beliefs about London and it’s inhabitants.

You see thread after thread of people slagging off London, with people almost getting RSI writing out how much they hate it whether or not London was even relevant to the thread. It’s bonkers.

HeddaGarbled · 12/12/2020 00:28

Those children did not look like they were enjoying themselves at all.

VanGoghsDog · 12/12/2020 00:28

safe enough for two heirs to the throne to attend

Four heirs to the throne.

stevalnamechanger · 12/12/2020 00:30

@lurker101

If it makes you feel less bitter they were at a special performance to thank key workers and their families for their sacrifices during the pandemic, and showing the general public that social distanced performances are considered safe enough for two heirs to the throne to attend, whilst supporting one of the worst hit industries.

I do however agree that it’s sad theatres can’t be open in tier 3 areas too

Finally some sense on this thread
GlummyMcGlummerson · 12/12/2020 00:32

I'm getting really really sick of this "If I can't have it they can't" attitude; and also the pessimism/melodrama around "I'll probably never go to a bar again". Grow up. Who gives a shit if someone else's kids go to the panto, aside from the fact that they're shit anyway, why begrudge other children a night of fun?

FAQs · 12/12/2020 00:33

I don’t know if there are any tickets left but there are a fair few drive in Pantos sited around the country, not the same I know but maybe an option?
