I am past caring now.
I feel for people who didn't want Brexit. Who know all the implications and can see the issues that are coming.

But if you want No Deal Brexit and it fucks you up, tough shit.

You wanted it. You get it. You own it.

And pardon me if I don't give a shit anymore about you.

At least Liz Truss is doing a sterling job 'ramping up' trade deals globally

Yeah, those trade deals with the Faroese are really great.

SabrinaThwaite · 13/12/2020 12:09

And no, Egypt doesn't have "plenty of water" water resources have always been a major issue in the country going back thousands of years. A growing population is putting modern Egypt's water resources in significant stress. Taking on the supply of the UK's tomatoes and soft fruit from the Netherlands would significantly add to that.

Egypt imports 97% of its renewable water the supply (one of the highest rates in the world) and is expected to drop below the renewable water scarcity threshold by 2030.

Eleganz · 13/12/2020 12:10

Greenhousing is possible in the UK but it would need a good supply of low carbon, low cost heat. That may be possible in the future but not at the moment.

Emeraldshamrock · 13/12/2020 12:13

It is a shit show snowballing out of control.

chomalungma · 13/12/2020 12:13

Speaking of greenhouse gases, the Daily Mail is encouraging people to buy 'high power' vacuum cleaners as we will no longer be limited to the lower power ones under EU regulations. Whilst at the same time, talking about the advantage of buying locally and holidaying in the UK as it reduces greenhouse gases.

I could tell them about why low power more efficient vacuums is a good thing but I know they don't want to be told such facts

[quote derxa]**@derxa I didn't know that. btw: when you say uneconomic do you mean in economic terms or too much work to maintain good quality? just curious uneconomic. The tomatoes themselves were lovely and full of flavour.

It’s much cheaper to produce tomatoes in warmer Mediterranean climates.

No deal import tariffs will be between 8.8% and 14.4% depending on the season - whether this will be enough to make UK tomatoes competitive, given the heating, CO2 and labour costs involved, remains to be seen.

ConfusedcomMum · 13/12/2020 12:14

Half of them won't even be around to experience the fallout.

@GetOffYourHighHorse

'why inflict a wound when it is absolutely unnecessary?'

Exactly! You would think the EU would understand a free trade deal is in everyone's best interests and stop sulking wouldn't you. At least Liz Truss is doing a sterling job 'ramping up' trade deals globally. The msm hardly mention that strangely.

Do you get paid for doing their propaganda work?
  1. EU will be just fine without UK money. They will feel the impact, but much less so than a country who has lost ALL trade alliances overnight.
(and have not prepared sufficiently)
  1. The EU DID NOT INFLICT THIS. The UK did.
  2. Liz Truss is an ass, just like the rest of them. Plus she has a cheese fetish.

A) Singapore: "The agreement largely replicates an existing EU-Singapore pact."
B) Vietnam: "sign a rollover deal with Vietnam to ensure trade continues on the same terms after January 1."
C) Egypt: almost the same as now
D) Canada - again, same as now with CA-EU, but without the tariff free part on cheese.

okay, I've lost the will to live....

LT is flying around the world to sign things that replicate what we had when in the EU. How is this possibly a better deal for us?

chomalungma · 13/12/2020 12:18

I notice that the DM is also talking about goods being more expensive to export to Europe because of EU tariffs.

Deliberate misinformation. Our goods will be more expensive to export because of WTO tariffs.

So good luck if you are in your factory and no one wants to buy your goods because they are more expensive to export. Oh - and the raw materials you need to produce your goods are more expensive because of import taxes.

That’s because the DM thinks more watts = better performance.

Spoiler - it doesn’t. It’s just a measure of how much power it uses.

Still, if DM readers just want to increase their electric bills, well you can’t argue with stupid.

@SabrinaThwaite / @derxa
Thanks for the light touch insight into UK greenhouses/tomatoes :)

june2007 · 13/12/2020 12:20

I think the attitude of the French toward the British fishing is showig why some of the people voted leave. Think of the Battles this summer involving the fishing boats.

Wonder if mega Brexiter Dyson will drop the price for plucky Brits?

It's a bit like someone separating and then renegotiating the same broadband deal with a company that they had before when they were together. And expecting us to praise them.

Tomatoes grow very successfully in polytunnels in the UK without any heating.

The negativity on this thread has done for me.

TheSunIsStillShining · 13/12/2020 12:28

For a second let's step away from the tomatoes. In general does anyone think that the UK can ramp up/create the greenhouses/etc it's fresh fruit and veg production to a level that will feed everyone?

And a 2nd thought: We might end up with veg, like we have with fish:
UK ppl don't like UK fish, so majority of uk fish caught ends up in EU, because Europeans like them. UK ppl like fish that swim in EU waters so eat imported fish.

We might be able to grow stuff, but will it be stuff that ppl want to eat? In a first world country coming to a point where you eat things because that's all you have is quite a low bar. And again: self inflicted for no reason but tax evasion....

StormzyinaTCup · 13/12/2020 12:31

It looks like we are extending again.

I suppose it is pantomime season after allXmas Hmm

Pretty much what the DM is encouraging people to do.

Eat fish from the UK
Go on holiday in the UK
Eat UK grown food
Buy UK cars

Huh? We have the perfect climate to grow most veg at least!

The negativity on this thread has done for me.

Not in Scotland they’re not.

The only commercial Scottish tomato grower uses heat from burning wood chips and CO2 from biomass.

BTW, whilst the British Tomato Growers Association are proud of cutting energy usage by 50% and by switching to
more sustainable sources like ground source heat pumps, but that doesn’t mean that commercial tomato growing is viable at scale without heating.

TheSunIsStillShining · 13/12/2020 12:39

Look at what people are buying: avocados, oranges, tangerines,...
These will be off the shelves for a while most potentially.

In the long run I do agree that many fruit and veg will be grown here potentially, there is the opportunity. The question -and I have no idea- is will the land mass be available, will the energy/technology be available to do this sustainably.

@chomalungma
The DM can go and shove it up...
I hate fish
And never in a million years would I buy a UK made car!!

MrsMiaWallis · 13/12/2020 12:39

They absolutely do. Not sure why people think we've suddenly become Finland Confused

chomalungma · 13/12/2020 12:41

Still - I am looking forward to cheap lamb.

That could be a bonus.

I am really looking forward to people complaining about their Spanish holidays being affected - and people not realising about customs, travel insurance, passports etc.

I am predicting a lot of angry faces in the DM and The Sun when people realise that not being in the EU means that we get treated exactly like someone from a non EU country. Who hasn't got a deal with the EU when it comes to travel etc.

Yes the teeth gnashing and wailing is deafening. This challenging year hasn't taught some people any resilience sadly.
