I am past caring now.
I feel for people who didn't want Brexit. Who know all the implications and can see the issues that are coming.

But if you want No Deal Brexit and it fucks you up, tough shit.

You wanted it. You get it. You own it.

And pardon me if I don't give a shit anymore about you.

I voted remain but was looking at the Norway model. There was never any guarantee of a deal though and voting leave was just way too risky.
This is a story of ruthless personal political ambition with no care as to the country or people served. The only people who could possibly benefit now are the super rich via short selling/ buying and selling currency. The pound will also be worthless, adding to tarriffs when trading with the EU.
If I lived in Scotland I would be voting for independence.I feel heart broken for this country.

Can't get British Tomatoes - well I think we should - most come from Dutch Greenhouses anyway (many environmentally powered) and the ex-industrial flat lands on the North Sea are just as well suited with a workforce waiting for local employment.

We could, but it takes time to set this up. So for many months/years? there is no chance in hell to get more than your windowsill tomatoes :(

Lithium - recently discovered in Cornwall.
Ok, didn't know that. Albeit I'm sceptical of quantities compare to China.

Kimchi - a really good way to eat root veg in winter - RTB likes Kimchi too.
Yay, I'm can't eat any fermented food due to a condition. And many other food types either (and those are the main british ones, though I'm fine with potato). But never mind, everyone should eat kimchi because it's good for you!

My point is that gov had 4 years and at least the last year as a min. to plan for these. So we could have had greenhouses set up and many other things to soften the horrible blow. But gen pop doesn't seem phased or care as all will be just fine.

Cornwall voted leave because of the fishing industry. I think snooty remainers should look into the history of fishing communities more

Nonsense, i live here and was raised here and i know plenty of remainers, not one gave fishing as a reason to leave.

Immigration was the main factor in voting leave, maybe in Newlyn its different? but Newlyn isn't Cornwall.

Don't know any snooty remainers or leavers for that matter, most of the leavers i know i went to school with, i won't fall out with them over brexit, esp as most regret their vote, as it simply hasn't turned out the way they were told it would.

Also, no one knows what Brexit with a deal or n deal will look like for years and I suspect the EU will collapse as lots of other countries will follow the Uk.

Thanks for that, I really needed a good laugh.

@MsSafina

Cornwall voted leave because of the fishing industry. I think snooty remainers should look into the history of fishing communities more. Norway never joined the EU despite being importuned twice by their politicians as they didn't want their fish to be plundered. Greenland left and it took 5 years to extricate themselves because their waters were being plundered. When Spain joined in 1986, the Galician fishing industry was driven to the wall and caused the smuggling of cocaine into Europe by Colombians using Spanish fishing trawlers who picked up the load in the Atlantic. See "Costa Cocaina" on Netflix for the story.
Well good for them. What a shame that as most of the fish landed in Cornwall is exported to the EU, they’re very likely to lose their markets. Here’s a report from 2016 cornwallreports.co.uk/lords-warn-of-brexits-threats-and-opportunities-for-cornwalls-fishing-fleet/ And recently www.cornwalllive.com/news/cornwall-news/brexit-changes-could-final-straw-4710965

You’d think they’d have sorted something out by now, what with the dangers being known about, wouldn’t you?

Maybe there’ll be a Netflix series about it some time in the future.

TheWichitaWineOne · 12/12/2020 21:26

Grin Is this the latest thing that Leavers are telling themselves now???

Oh, those sunny fucking uplands, eh?

TheSunIsStillShining · 12/12/2020 21:26

@PortraitOfAWoman
Which countries do you think will leave?
eastern europeans won't - they desperately need EU money.
Greece - see above
Germany/France - come on....
Spain/Italy? - I think they are more pragmatic than to actually consider this with a straight face

Marmite17 · 12/12/2020 21:30

We sold many fishing rights and fishing is a tiny part of our economy compared to what we will lose. The whole navy ships thing is ridiculous and a waste of money- plus surely they would always be ready to be deployed?
Just feeding in to a Dam Busters mentally to divert from real catastrophe.

jasjas1973 · 12/12/2020 21:31

I am curious though - given the current 3 sticking points - does anyone here have a proposal about what they think the UK Govt should 'compromise' on, relevant to the 3 points, in order to reach a Leaving Deal with the EU?

The EU have said we don't have to following any new rules so we should agree to a 1 year transition period (on fishing) to allow further discussions seems sensible.

zoemum2006 · 12/12/2020 21:39

That’s how I feel. If they want to burn it all to the ground then DO IT!!! And stop threatening us with chaos.

Maybe then their kinds will be focused to actually take this seriously.

Marmite17 · 12/12/2020 21:40

The long term effects of no deal will result in many businesses going bust/ unable to operate and no new ones wanting to come here due to more expensive trade with the EU.
Then unemployment, putting more strain on the already stretched benefits system.
Really hoping that someone will step in at the last minute to save us from this. But think they won't- this country will be destroyed.

StormzyinaTCup · 12/12/2020 21:48

These have always been the sticking points for 4.5 years because there are no compromises, it’s just dragging out the inevitable. They might as well have just called it last week instead we have spent a further week having to watch a willy waving spectacle from both sides.

HateIsNotGood · 12/12/2020 21:56

jas I agree there - actually I think that a 3-5 year transition is very doable, even up to 7 years; and afterwards EU Boats should still be able to fish UK Waters, but under quotas determined by the UK (and/or Norway depending on the Waters).

Also sensible as it gives the UK time to build its small-medium sized fleet - in UK shipyards (eg: Appledore).

But as many here have stated - fishing is relatively small in the Bigger Scheme - so, it's not really just about Fishing.

Whilst VDL asserts that the UK can do what it wants, but be sanctioned if they do what they want too much, perhaps if the EU were to agree to reach some of the 'higher standards' already set by the UK (eg: animal welfare) there could be some compromise on their side too?

All moot it seems as the EU have already negotiated with themelves and can not compromise on anything now.

SOmuchsparkle · 12/12/2020 21:57

And I do have very little sympathy for people who vote for a Government that will shaft them - and then complain that the Government is shafting them.

This!

frumpety · 12/12/2020 21:58

Remind me again just how many ships the Fishery protection sqaudron have ? I thought they had 3 or 4 decent sized vessels to cover the whole of the UK's fishing grounds. But that might actually be three reactivated vessels ( the UK Navy lease them first then buy them later, bit like the personal lease scheme people buy their cars with), they don't just swan around protecting fishing, they are also involved in shadowing Russian destroyers through the Channel amongst other things.
If the Russians really wanted to mix things up a bit following the end of the transition period, they could choose to pootle up and down the Channel a lot*, the RN is going to focus a lot more on that than a few French fisherman.

HateIsNotGood · 12/12/2020 22:06

frumpety maybe I have a warped sense of humour but it's almost worth a No Leaving Deal just to watch the naval/channel/fishing shenanigans play out; throw in some "Russian destroyers" and great amusements for all.

FastMovingLuxuryGoods · 12/12/2020 22:09

@Workerbee80

I voted leave then got my Irish passport sorted for myself and family, so I'll be absolutely fine OP. Grin
I really, really hope you're joking.

If you're not, then I really don't have words to describe the kind of person you must be.

frumpety · 12/12/2020 22:10

@HateIsNotGood I can imagine a mix of Mon Oncle and Operation Petticoat Grin

Cattenberg · 12/12/2020 22:11

Had the fanatical remainers been prepared to compromise, the hard Brexit we are faced with might have been avoided.

I think Owen Jones was arguing this recently, but I couldn’t access the full article.

Anyway, I don’t agree, because Theresa May ruled out any form of soft Brexit early on. As a country, we didn’t really get to discuss the pros and cons of a Norway-style or Swiss-style relationship with the EU. We were just told what kind of Brexit we were getting.

Marmite17 · 12/12/2020 22:12

Norway did get a good deal from the EU- even though they didn't join them. They still have free trade and free movement of labour. They do not have an issue with immigration as people are allowed in to work- plus their families. If a worker loses their job they are allowed I think 6 months? may be wrong to get another one.
We need free movement of labour eg the NHS

HateIsNotGood · 12/12/2020 22:12

Indeed frumpety.....Wink

jasjas1973 · 12/12/2020 22:14

All moot it seems as the EU have already negotiated with themselves and can not compromise on anything now

It is the UK that have drawn a red line on fishing, point blank refusing the 1 yr transition and the flights lorries proposed by the EU.

I have not read of any compromises by the UK, the NI deal is separate.

HateIsNotGood · 12/12/2020 22:15

And the UK recently made an agreement with Norway about fishing joint-waters. So, yes, Norway does do a very good job at looking after it's own interests - within and without the EU.

jasjas1973 · 12/12/2020 22:16

EFTA was set up with the UK one of its founding members in 1960.

Can set up its own FTAs, not in CAP or CFP, tighter FOM, lower contributions.

Bizarre it was ruled out.
