I am past caring now.
I feel for people who didn't want Brexit. Who know all the implications and can see the issues that are coming.

But if you want No Deal Brexit and it fucks you up, tough shit.

You wanted it. You get it. You own it.

And pardon me if I don't give a shit anymore about you.

It was the Cadbury factory at Keynsham FWIW

Ladyks · 12/12/2020 18:27

No offense, but I don’t think anyone particularly cares what you personally think? I’m sure they’ll suffer or maybe not, but most leavers I’ve spoken to were well aware that it could end in a no deal & prefer that to a bad deal. (I did not vote as I didn’t live here)

Given many people (on all sides) aren't that clued up about economics and what terms such as tariffs mean, I don't really think people know what No Deal really will mean.

www.escoe.ac.uk/publications/public-understanding-of-economics-and-economic-statistics/

Despite the fairly accurate knowledge of the UK’s trading position, and despite the public debate about trade negotiations in recent years, focus group participants demonstrated less knowledge about
trade deals, and were most often only able to speak about it in broad terms as a ‘contract’ or ‘agreement’ between countries.

Participants rarely brought up or accurately explained specific aspects of trade deals such as tariffs and common standards

Really Lady? So most of the Leavers you know completely ignored what the Leave leaders said at the time?

So Cadbury sells to Kraft (us company) days later closes Keynsham despite promising it wouldn't and moves to Poland? and thats the Eu's fault...... or US multinational cons UK and takes adv of cheaper labour in Poland.
TheWichitaWineOne · 12/12/2020 18:37

I'll file that one with 'most Remainers I've spoken to really regret not voting to Leave.'

KinseyWinsey · 12/12/2020 18:39

@Mamamia456 Cadbury was bought by Kraft which is American.

Kraft shafted Cadbury.

Not sure what the EU has to do with it.

I can't find any evidence of loans or grants from the EU to Kraft for developing the factory to Poland.

Yep

Don’t forget the ‘i voted remain but because remainers are so mean i would vote leave next time’

MaMaLa321 · 12/12/2020 19:06

the Polish factory was built using EU Regional Development Funds.
Yes, Kraft shafted Keynsham, but the EU enabled it.

What Cadbury actually did was outsource product of the smaller bars to Poland to an existing factory, which probably was built using EU funds but not to "encourage" cadbury to move, it was already there, up and running.
Cohenlover · 12/12/2020 19:31

Do the people on here who voted remain and now sneer down their middle class noses
There is something very unpleasant about the posters who seem to think if you voted remain you have no idea what real life is and you live in a bubble of gap years and ski weeks. As if those who voted Leave are the salt of the earth, hard workers here. That's just not true so why be so divisive?

This exactly. From a very impoverished background. Staunch remainer.

MsSafina · 12/12/2020 19:43

The ERG have got what they wanted which is No Deal. Had the fanatical remainers been prepared to compromise, the hard Brexit we are faced with might have been avoided. Interesting that the party who promised to honour the referendum result and then reneged on it in 2019 (Labour) was given the boot, as were the Lib Democrats (Revoke Article 50) and the various MPs who changed parties (Soubry, Chukka etc). People don't like politicians telling them to change their vote. So hard brexit and suck it up. May's deal was a lot softer and not too different from what Labour was demanding

Ah, the EU Regional Development Fund. That we had access to when in the EU and don’t have any more. For a nostalgic stroll down Memory Lane, here’s a link to the England Operational Programme for the EU RDF 2014 - 2020

PS I gather Cornwall’s a bit miffed that they’re not now going to have the funds they were promised to replace the EU money. But hey, Cornwall voted Leave.

frumpety · 12/12/2020 20:30

We have left the EU. I know January seems like an awfully long time ago now, but we did leave. Fortunately for us we still had some of the transition period left, so nothing actually changed. So for the last 11 months we have been in the position of leaving but remaining. In 18 days time we will leave the transition period and will face the real consequences of leaving.

18 days to go.

Part of me still hopes that there is a grown up somewhere in the Government who realises that leaving with no deal is a very bad idea indeed for the vast majority of the UK's population. Unfortunately, none of the cabinet seem to have cottoned on to this fact, either because they are ignorant or arrogant ?

MsSafina · 12/12/2020 20:36

No because they know going back on it means they are toast with their own voters and some of the ones they picked up in the Red Wall. This will make Boris more popular not less.

Barbie222 · 12/12/2020 20:36

I think to be fair most people who voted leave didn't have a clue what they were voting for and were the kinds of people who don't see the gaps in their own thinking, seeing the world as frustratingly simple and easy.

chomalungma · 12/12/2020 20:38

Cornwall voted leave because of the fishing industry. I think snooty remainers should look into the history of fishing communities more. Norway never joined the EU despite being importuned twice by their politicians as they didn't want their fish to be plundered. Greenland left and it took 5 years to extricate themselves because their waters were being plundered. When Spain joined in 1986, the Galician fishing industry was driven to the wall and caused the smuggling of cocaine into Europe by Colombians using Spanish fishing trawlers who picked up the load in the Atlantic. See "Costa Cocaina" on Netflix for the story.

notafanoftheman · 12/12/2020 20:57

I personally do not agree that specific categories of people, based on age etc., should be disenfranchised because we should all have a say for we are in a democracy.

Shame that noble sentiment wasn’t extended to the millions of Brits living in Europe and elsewhere eh? Who would have certainly tipped the balance the other way. I’ve been told I «abandoned my homeland» on here for marrying a Frenchman.

HateIsNotGood · 12/12/2020 20:58

Just a couple of brief points in ref to a couple raised many posts ago

Can't get British Tomatoes - well I think we should - most come from Dutch Greenhouses anyway (many environmentally powered) and the ex-industrial flat lands on the North Sea are just as well suited with a workforce waiting for local employment.

Lithium - recently discovered in Cornwall.

Kimchi - a really good way to eat root veg in winter - RTB likes Kimchi too.

TheWichitaWineOne · 12/12/2020 21:04

Unfortunately, none of the cabinet seem to have cottoned on to this fact, either because they are ignorant or arrogant

They're both, but I don't think that's the issue. The referendum was called to manage away the issue posed by the Tory Ultras (Jacob Rees Mogg et al). It was a lazy, one-eyed party management exercise that went catastrophically wrong.

And now, following 4 years of piss-poor opposition, crap leadership and blustering, lying bullshit, the ultras have it in the bag.

JRM has drawled something about it taking 50 years for the common man to see the economic benefits of Brexit. It will take a matter of weeks for him to start seeing the benefits as he stands to pocket millions from it.

Deregulation. Eliminating workers' rights. Fuck the environment. Piss all over the poor.

This is the most brutal, cruel Tory government for many years. They are seeking to profit massively from Brexit and they really, really don't give a shit about anyone who will bear the consequences. BJ is beyond hopeless, and now we're beyond the reach of his lies, crap gags and Churchwellian bullshit, he has nothing left to offer.

This 'we're heading for No Deal' is either a managed exercise in making him look 'statesmanlike' as he pulls out a version of Teresa May's deal at the last minute, and 'saves' the country, or he's subject to the wrath of the ultras and he is just as incapable of managing them as Cameron was, and we crash and burn without a deal.

They lied and lied and lied and lied and lied. We're a joke to the rest of the world. The Biden government loathe BJ for his racist jibes to Obama and have not forgiven him. We've lost any chance of being a voice worth listening to in any meaningful, global way. Half the country hates the other half. Our children will hate us all. Some of us have seen friends and family leave the country.

And yet Brexit voters 'would do it all again.' Why is anyone's fucking guess.

Workerbee80 · 12/12/2020 21:05

I voted leave then got my Irish passport sorted for myself and family, so I'll be absolutely fine OP. Grin

MsSafina · 12/12/2020 21:06

And talking of Norway, they were expecting a deal and a tripartite deal giving access to the EU and the UK to their sustainable cod fishing waters but are now banning both the EU and the UK from fishing in their waters.

TheWichitaWineOne · 12/12/2020 21:09

I voted leave then got my Irish passport sorted for myself and family, so I'll be absolutely fine OP

What were your reasons for doing so?

HateIsNotGood · 12/12/2020 21:12

Whilst I would have preferred a Leaving Deal it does appear that this isn't going to happen in one big deal.

I am curious though - given the current 3 sticking points - does anyone here have a proposal about what they think the UK Govt should 'compromise' on, relevant to the 3 points, in order to reach a Leaving Deal with the EU?

Given that 90% of the Leaving Deal has been achieved.
