I am past caring now.
I feel for people who didn't want Brexit. Who know all the implications and can see the issues that are coming.

But if you want No Deal Brexit and it fucks you up, tough shit.

You wanted it. You get it. You own it.

And pardon me if I don't give a shit anymore about you.

I do wonder how many people complaining about the faceless EU regime ever tried to engage with one of their MEPs. When I lived in Ireland everyone knew who the MEPs were and European elections were taken as seriously as any others.

akerman · 12/12/2020 15:27

It however the £350 million was to be spent, it was a lie that we sent over that much. Moreover Brexit, to date, has cost us more than all of our annual contributions combined.

And referendums based on lies and foreign influence, where there are no two clearly defined outcomes are not democratic, however much anyone wants to pretend otherwise.

Europilgrim · 12/12/2020 15:28

Exactly. My MEPs are very present online and in the past I wrote to mine to get some help getting a deposit back from a terrible landlord. They wrote him an "official" letter and lo and behold, I got it back! Very helpful.

Eleganz · 12/12/2020 15:30

Why do people harp on about the lies and 350 million promised to the NHS? It was NEVER promised that 350 million would be spent on the NHS

The vote leave campaign had a slogan that read:

"Let's give the NHS the £350 million the EU takes every week"

Look it up. There are photographs of Boris, Liam Fox and Gisela Stuart all standing in front of it delivering Vote Leave campaign briefings.

I'd say that it was a reasonable thing for some people to think that that was a campaign promise.

The problem is that most people in the UK aren't used to referendums and so fell into the trap that this was like the GE and the promises actually could be delivered by some kind of coherent political force. A referendum is just a method of showing which choice is favoured by the majority of voters, you can't vote on a manifesto in a referendum. Remainers pointed this out multiple times and were just laughed off.

Europilgrim · 12/12/2020 15:31

Well you might be clever enough to appreciate the subtleties but a lot of people quite reasonably thought that "We send the EU 350 million a week, let's fund our NHS instead" meant "we send the EU 350 million a week, let's fund our NHS instead". AngryAngryAngry And the lies were and still are lies.

Eleganz · 12/12/2020 15:34

@Europilgrim they were much more direct than that with their other slogan that I pointed out above. They used it lots of times for briefing and on billboards, they just didn't put it on the side of a bus.

Europilgrim · 12/12/2020 15:36

@Eleganz -aah, but I'm sure that someone will be along in a moment to tell us that "Let's" is used to make a suggestion. We were never meant to take them at their word. We really were very silly to do that.

Eleganz · 12/12/2020 15:39

@europilgrim

And technically they'd be correct.

However when Ken and Janet down the working man's club state that it was a key reason why they voted leave then whether it is technically correct or not is a mute point. It was designed to appear like a deliverable promise and verbally sold as one at the time.

Eleganz · 12/12/2020 15:41

*moot

Europilgrim · 12/12/2020 15:43

@Eleganz - in case it wasn't clear - I totally agree!

SecretSpAD · 12/12/2020 15:50

suspect the EU will collapse as lots of other countries will follow the Uk.

Ahh yes, the new leavers argument. Brexit is so wonderful that everyone else wants it.

Deluded fools.

I care about the future of the people who live in this country - odd Ley enough, after devoting most of my working life to improving their health and wellbeing. But there comes a point when you've just got to let it all play out.....let it fail, let people lose their jobs and homes, let them experience what no deal really will do. Maybe then they will stop voting for this shitshow of a government and we can move forward as a country and actually improve things for our citizens.

VerlynWebbe · 12/12/2020 16:17

Have heard a bit over the years that various countries are on the verge of financial collapse, but not that any specifically want to leave. And then bingo, here we are, suddenly the EU is rife with countries who want to tank their economies, kill their supply chains stone dead, AND lose all international credibility? Come OFF it.

SinisterBumFacedCat · 12/12/2020 16:17

People don’t harp on about the £350 million going to the NHS because they neither expected or wanted that, it was just made them looked like they cared. The minute the result came through not one Leaver has mentioned this promise, let alone insist it be respected.

Yes

A colleague of mine intimated at the time that anyone voting remain obviously did not want to support the NHS by enabling them to get SOME of the money we gave to the EU

Havanananana · 12/12/2020 17:19

So why put it on the side of the bus, or project it behind Johnson every time he made a speech? See photos above.

Where were the busses with:

  • Let's spend £350m a week on education and training
  • Let's spend £350m building affordable housing
  • Let's spend £350m on slum clearance
  • Let's spend £350m on better infrastructure?

Not as catchy. Not as likely to grab the attention of the voters, I suppose.

There was one bus I seem to remember...

'you should all be made to go and live on ships, with no trade deals, no immigrants, and only each other to look at. You’ll enjoy it. And I’ll laugh at you, and watch you fucking starve.'

They're out in full force today. Look log off and have a little lie down Flowers.

Hoghedge10 · 12/12/2020 17:39

I will be able to weather brexit fairly easily, it shouldn't be too much of a problem unless our food bills get incredibly high but even then we can deal with that a lot better than most and quite honestly I almost feel guilty.

I voted remain and am a staunch remainder and left wing voter. I feel incredibly worried about the people who can't weather this no deal as I can. I don't care how they voted when they end up starving in the streets.

I can only hope brexit goes well and I will continue to stock pile some food (sensibly) in the hope that if its really bad I can donate to the local food banks and help people in our village/town who are struggling. I will plant my massive amount of veg seeds so again I can donate fresh food if necessary.

I don't know how you could live with yourself saying 'oh well they deserve it' when you are faced with watching people in real dire straits. This attitude sounds very much like the people you are bemoaning OP, it's a shame you can't see the irony.

So I continue to hope things will be OK and carry on planning how I can help myself and others if things get really bad. I don't really see how a hateful attitude is going to get you anything other than a rotten soul tbh.

I would suggest if it upsets you so much don't ask who people voted for and treat everyone as if they were staunch remainers or people mislead by the lies that were, and still are, being peddled.

kinsey. Yes, it closed down and moved to a new factory in Poland. Built, as I've said, with EU funding.

kinsey. Yes, it closed down and moved to a new factory in Poland. Built, as I've said, with EU funding.
I don't believe that, can you name the company and when?

The decision would have been made to move, the company then applies for any available grants.

jasjas1973 · 12/12/2020 17:58

However, once we leave transition, nothing to stop an EU country making available billions of euros to encourage Nissan et al to move to Eastern europe where wages are cheaper but great cars like Skoda are built (so a skilled workforce) and also reminding them they have no tariffs to contend with......

LexMitior · 12/12/2020 18:02

It’s pretty obvious that what will happen is that a lot of businesses that did trade with Europe will fold. Too expensive.

Customs chaos. One week all you can buy is cauliflower, the next, lychees and jack fruit. Fresh food supply will have a random element for perhaps six months.

Middle class shrinking. The great irony is that actually those not in secure employment (permanent) are going to find equivalent work hard to get. Never mind levelling up - you’ll have a smaller, more privileged middle class.

Finally, regional development or levelling up will take a decade.

So good for those who are secure already. For those not, a real shitshow awaits.

Trade is about power. If people think the EU is bad, wait until the UK has to deal with the US and China. Much tougher.

MayYouLiveInInterestingTimes · 12/12/2020 18:07

Yes, actually it’s a valid point. Why do people keep harping on about misinformation and lies, which were believed and vociferously argued for at the time? Why even harp on about Brexiteers constantly rewriting or reinterpreting their past actions to make themselves look better? Why bother, it doesn’t matter if our politicians are totally corrupt, remove someone else’s employment rights, destroy health care, the food supply and the history that might have told you things were once better, will tell anyone anything to disguise their offshore tax havens and get the supply of mindless cheap labour they want, when they want it. As long as Love Island, the footy, or some other shite is on the telly who cares, nothing’s important.

KinseyWinsey · 12/12/2020 18:15

@Mamamia456 was it Jaguar Landrover? Peugeot? Ford?

Ford got an EU loan for their move to Turkey after the Southampton plant had closed. The Turkish plant was already building most of their transit vans.

The other companies didn't get money from the EU.

The EU had already given money to Ford UK but that still didn't save the Southampton plant.

Could you provide some specifics for your claim?

It's annoying when people make all these claims about the EU but don't bother to substantiate them.

KenDodd · 12/12/2020 18:19

@Newrumpus

I'm sorry if I've misunderstood you. Please explain what you mean by this then -

ATM we are all equal in the ballot box perhaps the only true equality we have and the most important one.

Because of our voting system we seem to be far from equal in the ballot box to me. Some people's vote is worth next to nothing, others are massively important, politicians know this and target resources accordingly. So please elaborate on this 'all equal' stuff?
