To want to know a benefit of brexit?

Dishwashersaurous · 10/12/2020 10:53

I know that brexit has been done to death. But as we crash into a no deal and inevitable queues at the border my children are asking what is the benefit of brexit.

Could someone please tell me a tangible benefit that I can tell them- as I am struggling to think of anything

But But But... Blue passports!! Xmas Wink

To want to know a benefit of brexit?
ohfourfoxache · 10/12/2020 10:57

How about that Boris is going to lead whilst fucking the country up so badly that he and his cronies will probably be voted out at the first opportunity?

Perhaps in a few years we’ll have a moment like the States are now - and be able to breathe easier when the imbeciles lose.....

raskolnikova · 10/12/2020 10:59

Just be honest and say there aren't any.

wonderstuff · 10/12/2020 10:59

I suspect it's so we can allow the ERG and their mates to retain a low tax liability.

Orangecake123 · 10/12/2020 11:01

Survival of the richest?

Sanchi · 10/12/2020 11:01
  • we are gonna take control back (whatever that means)
  • the East Europeans won't come anymore and work for a paltry wage in the care sector or other industries which are too tough for the indigenous population and take our jobs
-and yes, blue passports!

I mean, what's not to like!

UrAWizHarry · 10/12/2020 11:02

Food shortages will lead to a reduction in obesity?

There are no benefits. None. Turns out project fear was project reality all along.

JuneFromBethesda · 10/12/2020 11:02

Fish? I’m sure there’s something to do with fish

Sanchi · 10/12/2020 11:03

the cheddar industry will flourish (because brie will become a luxury). I prefer cheddar. So yeah!

Dishwashersaurous · 10/12/2020 11:05

I know that there are no benefits.

Which then begs the next question- why are we doing it then?

Anothet goady thread 🙄

AlexaShutUp · 10/12/2020 11:06

Surely, most of us would give up anything to get our blue passports back?

corkernewyorker · 10/12/2020 11:07

As a Brit abroad, my money goes much farther when shopping online for gifts for family in the UK. The value of the pound is weakening against my (now) home currency. Cheap Christmas and birthdays.

But on the other hand, having to jump through the hoops to stay where we are is a giant pain in the arse, as has been all the uncertainty.

raskolnikova · 10/12/2020 11:08

@Dishwashersaurous

I know that there are no benefits.

Which then begs the next question- why are we doing it then?

We can only speculate about the sinister motivations behind it all.
Sparticle · 10/12/2020 11:08

I was struggling last night and the only thing I could vaguely come up with was cheese-related. But I like continental cheese so it's not great really :(
AlexaShutUp · 10/12/2020 11:09

Anothet goady thread 🙄

Why is it goady, Mammamia456? It's a reasonable question. I guess it could only be classed as goady if it was patently obvious to everyone that there aren't going to be any benefits.

Oh wait...

RandomLondoner · 10/12/2020 11:13

I've spent the past few months of lockdown plotting to buy a yacht. Never stepped on one in my life before, and it will probably never happen, due to other life commitments. But if I do buy it, Brexit could enable me sail it in the EU without paying VAT on it. I'm thinking of making Turkey my base and cruising the Mediterranean, spending 90 days each summer in EU waters. If I were an EU resident, I couldn't take a yacht into EU waters without being handed an 80K VAT bill.

I guess this might be more obscure than OP had hoped for...

(For those now wondering about the intricacies of VAT on yachts, in my plan I couldn't enter UK waters with it, as that would trigger a UK VAT bill. But compared to cruising in Greek islands in summer, UK waters aren't sufficiently attractive that I would pay 80K extra to sail here.)

Pukkatea · 10/12/2020 11:15

I've got the new passport and it's not even blue! More lies!

AlexaShutUp · 10/12/2020 11:15

I've got the new passport and it's not even blue! Shock

gamerchick · 10/12/2020 11:16

@Mamamia456

Anothet goady thread 🙄
Yep.

'my kids are asking' ok then.

I don't want brexit just as much as the next person but these threads are tiresum. Looking for someone to skin alive to take frustrations out on.

There is a brexit board, over there somewhere.

Mamamia456 · 10/12/2020 11:16

Alexa - Because these types of thread have been done to death. They're just boring now. If you are genuinely interested go to the Brexit section on here and look at all the relevant threads.

raskolnikova · 10/12/2020 11:19

If you're sick of talking about Brexit now, you're going to hate January...

AlexaShutUp · 10/12/2020 11:19

I've seen some of those threads before, Mammamia456, but don't recall seeing any actual benefits being listed. Consequently, I think it's fair enough for the OP to ask again, in case someone has managed to think of something.

I do understand that it must be tiresome though for the Brexiteers to keep getting reminded of the terrible mistake that they made.

RandomLondoner · 10/12/2020 11:19

(To explain further: a non-resident visitor can sail in EU/UK waters for 18 months at a time before a VAT bill is incurred on a yacht. And they only need to leave for one day to reset the clock. However that's all a bit academic, if the owner (as opposed to the yacht) is only allowed to visit for 90 days in every 180, under the standard visa allowances.)

TeddyIsaHe · 10/12/2020 11:21

I love how Brexiteers moan about threads being goady while STILL not being able to give a tangible benefit.

Way to change the subject hey? Grin
