To want to know a benefit of brexit?

408 replies

Dishwashersaurous · 10/12/2020 10:53

I know that brexit has been done to death. But as we crash into a no deal and inevitable queues at the border my children are asking what is the benefit of brexit.

Could someone please tell me a tangible benefit that I can tell them- as I am struggling to think of anything

Can l derail?

Scotland back in the EU lickity-split

Years ago l worked in clothing supply and My Little Pony was really popular. Anyway for some random reason 50,000 little girls pants with ‘LicketySplit’ hit the shop floor.

Lots of complaints, had to pull them all out of store.Still not sure how it happened now..🙄😂

As you were

@DianaOfTheLakes

the cheddar industry will flourish (because brie will become a luxury). I prefer cheddar. So yeah!

Cornish Brie is nice. I am however, struggling to find a British cheese similar to Cambezola.

(My cheese habit will bankrupt me if foreign cheese becomes more expensive after Brexit, so I have been busy trying British versions of my faves).

Most cheddar cheese in the UK is imported from the EU I believe.
Countarthursgroupie · 10/12/2020 12:37

We'll get rid (I hope) of live animal exports.

Ginfordinner · 10/12/2020 12:39

Cornish Brie is lovely.

What's the big deal with blue passports? I couldn't wait to get rid of my bulky passport for something smaller.

ohfourfoxache · 10/12/2020 12:42

Huge positive of Brexit is that we’ve learned not to shout each other down and calling people idiots when encountering genuine questions and different viewpoints. Which is handy because healthy debates and explanations can actually change minds.

Oh, wait......

DianaOfTheLakes · 10/12/2020 12:42

That may be the case, I'm not an expert in this subject.

The OP wanted to know if anyone had any upsides to leaving Brexit. I have discovered some amazing British cheeses over the last couple of years.

Being able to selectively close boarders immediately theres a global Panademic happening. Having manned boarders you can closed.

Apparently the NHS cant survive without EU nursing staff, but we can't pay uk trained nurses' burseries because there isn't the need. This is the wrong way round to me.

DianaOfTheLakes · 10/12/2020 12:43

@Ginfordinner

Is Brie a euphemism for blue passports?

Viviennemary · 10/12/2020 12:44

Democracy won.

Covidnomore · 10/12/2020 12:45

1/ we actually begin to deal with the devastating consequences rather than just talking about it

2/ since we will be barred from entering EU, we won't get loads of people going on holiday and bringing more Coronavirus back with them!

We do pay nursing bursaries. £5k plus up to a further £3k in certain circumstances.

The new ones are the same size as the burgundy ones. Which considering that the complaint about the burgundy ones was that they were flimsy little things...

Anyway, here is a list of benefits from a select committee back in October:
Taking back control of borders with a points based system of immigration.
Making our own laws and regulations.
A British regulatory framework will be able to better exploit the fourth industrial revolution and avoid EU protectionism.
Controlling trade policy, leading to new and better agreements such as the Japan FTA and joining the CPTPP.
An independent sanctions and human rights regime separate to and more progressive than the EU’s.
Taking back control of fishing waters and exclusive economic zone.
Replacing the wasteful anti-environmental Common Agricultural Policy.
More accountable political system. Direct Parliamentary accountability. Politicians no longer hiding behind EU rules.
A new state aid regime that is responsive and in keeping with free market principles, but also that support the agenda of levelling up.
New freeports.
Taking back control of the £20 billion currently controlled by the EU every year to spend on UK priorities instead.
Plus what was mentioned upthread about equal recruitment on the basis of ability rather than automatically prioritising EU candidates over better candidates from non-EU countries.

Scotland back in the EU lickity-split

Will Scotland not need to apply to join the EU, as an independent nation?

Yes and would have to jump through many hoops to do so which would take years.
WitchesSpelleas · 10/12/2020 12:52

The live animal export ban is the only one I'm aware of.

DdraigGoch · 10/12/2020 12:54

When I saw the news this morning, I did say that I wished that there was a travel ban in place this summer. Imagine how much better a position we'd be in if that Cardiff-Zante flight (and the others) had never happened.

Dugee · 10/12/2020 12:55

@DianaOfTheLakes

At risk of derailing, DP got me a cheese subscription from here for my birthday.

I don't know if they only sell British cheeses but everything we've had so far has been British. Appleby Cheddar and Harrogate Blue have been my faves so far.

Hoops including fiscal ones which will make George Osborne look like a spendthrift:

You have manned border. Unless I imagined all that border agents checking my passport (except between UK and Ireland). You can also close the borders. Like some other EU states did
LeaveMyDamnJam · 10/12/2020 13:03

@Shastabeast

I’m a remainer and can see the benefit in taking away a layer of bureaucracy. We will be able to make laws that suit the U.K. better than an EU wide law.

I remember talk about the EU not having a trade deal with Mexico, way back. If this is still the case we will benefit from being able to negotiate a deal direct.

I’m sure it will be ok in the end. It will be a bumpy ride. I don’t have faith in BoJo etc and their huge egos. I do wonder if we will rejoin at some point, perhaps less integrated however.

We already make laws to suit ourselves. That is what parliament does every day.
TheSandman · 10/12/2020 13:04

@DianaOfTheLakes

Scotland back in the EU lickity-split

Will Scotland not need to apply to join the EU, as an independent nation?

Yes. Various well-placed EU types have indicated that we (Scotland) already meet all the criteria for joining and it's a rubber stamp job.

And NO we won't have to join the Euro as a condition of entering. I think we have to sign up to commit joining the Euro... at sometime in the future, maybe, if we feel the conditions are right, and we've got nothing else on that weekend.

@cardswapping Spanish sources have already indicated they will not stop an already Independent Scotland from joining. And Scotland is not a 'Region' it is a separate nation in a union with another. Unions, as England has so ably demonstrated with Brexit, can be dissolved. (Catalonia is a region of Spain, different matter entirely.)

@Hazelnutlatteplease A return of manufacturing and complete manufacturing supply chains to the UK.

That's going well isn't it?

Tell your kids that their BAME friends will be more likely to get a job as they will not have to compete with white europeans.

Thanks, but as an EU citizen, my BAME daughter had the same rights as any other Europeans, so I fail to see how this is going to benefit her. On the contrary, she has lost her right to live and work in the EU, just like the rest of us.

Is there a diary note somewhere to start one of these exact threads every 2 weeks?

OP doesn't want to hear about any benefits - the idea is to find a Leave supporter to abuse.

This is curious. Do you have some data on this?
