To want to know a benefit of brexit?

Dishwashersaurous · 10/12/2020 10:53

I know that brexit has been done to death. But as we crash into a no deal and inevitable queues at the border my children are asking what is the benefit of brexit.

Could someone please tell me a tangible benefit that I can tell them- as I am struggling to think of anything

OP posts:

@TheSandman thanks, interesting feedback from Spain.

DianaOfTheLakes · 10/12/2020 13:54

Thanks Dugee.

They have a cheese on there called Cote Hill Blue that looks like it may be similar to Cambozola. I'll give it a go.

Is there a diary note somewhere to start one of these exact threads every 2 weeks?

OP doesn't want to hear about any benefits - the idea is to find a Leave supporter to abuse.

No it isn’t.

It’s been 4 years and not one single leaver has been able to give a benefit that is better than we already have. Apart from keeping the foreigners out Hmm

Cattenberg · 10/12/2020 14:01

I’ve found this thread interesting, even if other people haven’t. I find some of the expected benefits implausible or likely to be a mixed blessing, but time will tell. If Brexit does improve animal welfare, then that will be great.

New freeports

What does this mean?

bellinisurge · 10/12/2020 14:08

It's fucking hilarious that people think this is done and we should stop talking about it.

I'm not a leaver but have pointed out several benefits on this thread.

How do you mean?

I’m all for talking about how soon we can start the campaign for a fresh referendum, or sharing ways to keep our ties to Europe going and I can see the point in discussing ongoing exit negotiations.

However, OP admitted she didn’t really want answers. She said herself she had rhetorically asked for benefits of Brexit but didn’t believe they existed. So it’s just another pointless rehash of the slanging match, isn’t it?

bellinisurge · 10/12/2020 14:19

@HerFlowersToLove , thing is , they've just cancelled the rules around lorry drivers working hours. Interesting that you think this government can be trusted to make working hours shorter.

bellinisurge · 10/12/2020 14:20

@GroundAlmonds , if you think people are going to stop talking about this you are very naive.
People have been bitching about our membership of the EU and its predecessor since we joined.

Yes, having complained loudly about the thread I should apologise to the handful of thoughtful posters such as yourself who said constructive or sensible things.

Yeah I know but it all stayed fairly civil (not to mention theoretical) until Call Me Dave announced the referendum.

So much of the “discussion” has people being swearing at each other and hurling abuse and going around and around n rhetorical circles. It’s like the world’s most dysfunctional divorce. So rancorous.

Frazzled2207 · 10/12/2020 14:25

I was fairly sure there were none but then i heard about us being able to put a proper end to exporting animals for slaughter. .....
But if we continued to be members of the EU we could argue for it to become illegal across the continent which is much better. Being part of the EU we have a voice in what it does. Obviously we don't any more.

I think it's all a shit show of epic proportions. My only hope is that a future far more reasonable (Labour) government will be prepared to engage with Europe and in the long term our relationship and cooperation will improve.

CheesePleaseLoueese · 10/12/2020 14:25

@byvirtue

Fast vaccine approval. You wanted one.
Yep as a remainer I agree with this statement. We do seem to have got a vaccine /vaccines in circulation remarkably quickly!

It does seem to be the (sole) benefit to Brexit...

I haven't changed my wider view on Brexit though.

So you don't agree that white privilege exists?

Of course white privilege exists but you'd be a fool to think that brexit will change this in any shape or form.

LakieLady · 10/12/2020 14:30

Remainers will get loads of "I told you so" opportunities when it's all gone tits up.

I'm looking forward to that and will be wearing my "Don't blame me, I voted Remain" badge with pride.

Not if you are as old as I am it didn't.

UrAWizHarry · 10/12/2020 14:34

@ILoveAllRainbowsx

It makes me laugh how the same people who bang on about white privilege are more likely to be remainers. Don't they care about BAME people competing for jobs with white europeans?

Actually, what a stupid question. Of course they don't care about BAME people. They just pretend to care. All they care about is their children being able to work in other countries because they have white privilege.

Most BAME people can't go and work in Germany etc because of the racism.

Leavers have come out with many stupid things over the years, and this is right up there in the really fucking stupid stakes.

Well done.

Does that mean I will cheer up about the state of everything as I get older and my memory gets longer? Smile Is it resilience or ennui?
BlackForestCake · 10/12/2020 14:35

@Dishwashersaurous

I know that there are no benefits.

Which then begs the next question- why are we doing it then?

Because half of us are thick as pigshit and believe anything Rupert Murdoch and the Daily Hitler tell us.
TheKeatingFive · 10/12/2020 14:38

Being able to selectively close boarders immediately theres a global Panademic happening. Having manned boarders you can closed.

Erm no. The agreed arrangements with NI wouldn’t allow this.

And whoever mentioned British cheese, EU membership wasn’t holding you back from eating this. Grin

Thank you. Perfect demonstration of the standard of “discussion” that usually prevails.
