I'm actually very lucky to have a lovely mother in law now but my ex's mum was something else!

Once when I had to move in with her temporarily for a couple of week. I had taken my first shower in the house. Afterwards she came to find me and frogmarched me to the bathroom telling me that she doesn't like the shower curtain getting wet and to fold it back when I'm showering which is already 🤔
The next time I had a shower I did as she asked and then asked her where I could find a mop / towel to clean the water on the floor (since you know... there's no shower curtain) she had the biggest flip out when she discovered there was a smal puddle on the floor and the bathroom mat was a bit wet.
She also told me that I wasn't allowed to use the towels as they was for display? (Wasn't going to they was about a million years old)
She proceeded to tell my ex that I was trying to destroy the house. Baffles me to this day how she washed??

That woman has made me sooo thankful for the MIL I have now!

What's your CF MIL stories? The crazier the better!!

Actually another one just popped into my head. Same ex and exMiL

One day my ex came home (his mothers house where we was staying) with the most beautiful white fluffy kitten who I just loved. When his mother came home she had a right strop and actually said "it's not fair" that he had brought me a kitten and not her...
so my ex toddled right back out to go get her one... 🤷🏻‍♀️
About a week later I came "home" from work and couldn't find my kitten. ExMIL informed me that she had put it in the garden because it was making her house smell... not her kitten just my one... I never saw that kitten again but I hope someone found her and gave her a loving home. 😔

My mil told me I had ruined her birthday weekend away, cried and tried to cancel it, as I had to travel down separately later that day than everyone else.

Because I was burying my Nan that morning.

Also when we lived with her, she insisted she take care of the money we were saving for or own place. She gave it ALL to my Bil who needed a loan without asking me. We were saving to buy and never managed as the money kept going missing, in the end I secretly saved enough just to rent and sadly we have rented since as we can't afford to buy whilst renting in this area.

When I was pregnant with my first DC we hurried over to excitedly tell them the gender of their first grandchild. I was met by "oh. Never mind."

I could go on 😂

DuzzyFuck · 10/12/2020 11:16

OMG OP!!! I thought my EXH's Mum was a old bitch but yours was awful!!

Mine used to go off on rants about people coming into where we live and taking jobs from decent local people (I am not local so that was always fun) but then when she was made redundant and struggling refused to consider any job in retail or hospitality because they were below her Hmm. She happily took benefits and sat at home instead.

I work in the Tourism field and encouraged my Ex's 17 year old DSis when she left school and wasn't going to UNI that it would be a good place for her to start; shift work so time to party, potential for included accommodation so could move out of home, a good crowd of people from all over the world and companies CRYING OUT for local staff. Again MIL expressed that this was below them as locals. I have no idea what kind of job she expected her unqualified daughter with zero work experience to walk into?!?! As far as I know now 5 years later that same DD works part-time in a bar and still lives at home Grin.

DuzzyFuck · 10/12/2020 11:19

Oh also the day after our wedding she called EXH ranting and raving to him to complain to the venue that she'd got food poisoning. She'd even taken herself to A&E apparently. Obviously she'd eaten the exact same meal as everyone at the wedding and nobody else was ill.

What she actually had was a hangover Hmm

Daleksatemyshed · 10/12/2020 11:19

Confused a@innercitysumo do you still see her? I couldn't, not after the fusss about your Nan's funeral, that's just awful!

MessyMummy15 · 10/12/2020 11:23

@innercitysumo bless you!! That must of been so stressful! 😔

@DuzzyFuck yes! They always seem to entitled don't they. My exMIL never had a job either and was always "broke" always had enough money for cigarettes and weed though. 🙄

As soon as we got engaged she wrote out a list of 90-odd guests (essentially PILs’ relatives and friends) whom we should invite. Definite CFery as far as I was concerned since my parents had very kindly offered to foot the bill for the whole thing.

I also had the “never mind” comment on announcing the sex of my first child.

MessyMummy15 · 10/12/2020 11:26

More stories about that same exMIL keep popping into my head

When I had recently moved into her house I politely declined dinner one evening as I had already evening and she took it the wrong way. From then on she would bring my ex hot steaming full roast dinners etc up to the room and never bring me any dinners because "I was obviously too good for her food" I lived off crisps for the 9 months I was living there until I ended up in hospital severely ill and deficient in every victims you can think of. 😒

My ex’s mum cleared out my wardrobe-and took the lot on holiday with her (we lived with her for a year)

My clothes, shoes, handbag, make up,perfume, jewellery and hair brush all lost or damaged

She lost or damaged quite a lot of my stuff-even though it was all in our room-she’d think nothing of having a snoop

She’d eat my food and allowed her other grandkids to break my babies stuff/eat her food (they broke the carrycot to my £1000 pram and she just laughed-I couldn’t sell it on once I’d finished with it)

She’d think nothing of taking my babies dummies to give to her 6 year old grandson

She stole money from me and would steal anything if it wasn’t pinned down

Kept calling herself mummy with my first born-but didn’t want to know my second

We moved out, round the corner and I’d left a bag of my babies clothes by mistake-she demanded I go back to collect it-when I got the bag home I found she’d got her other son to spunk/shit all over them

We moved about half hour away,to a bigger house and she refused to have anything to do with them

Fast forward 18 years later my first born was in Tesco with her cousin and they saw her behind the deli counter where she worked

Dd said hello and told her who she was-only to be greeted with a barrage of abuse and swear words

She made a sharp exit and hasn’t bothered with her since

Somehow it’s all my fault and she’ll ’never forgive me’

Strangedayindeed · 10/12/2020 11:32

@innercitysumo you gave her your money? Why??

Gardeniaofdelights · 10/12/2020 11:34

This is making me even more grateful than ever for my mother in law, who is literally one of the best people in the world. I had my first baby a week ago and she has been round every day (at my request - she’s careful not to intrude) to help with cooking, cleaning, looking after the baby etc. I’ve never met anyone kinder or more generous than her.

lunar1 · 10/12/2020 11:35

I got really lucky, two wonderful mother in laws. I'm still in touch with my first husband's mum, she is lovely with my children and would have been an incredible grandmother if it had been meant to be. It must be difficult for her that I went on to have a family after we lost him, she has never let it show.

My husbands mum passed away not to long ago but she was always incredibly kind and welcoming. Culturally his parents could have made things very difficult, but they were fantastic from day one.

There are good ones out there.

EdwardBear1920 · 10/12/2020 11:36

Messy, your ex-MIL certainly sounds like a disaster, but only eating crisps until you made yourself ill seems like a very extreme thing to do. There are alternative ways to feed yourself, even without a kitchen. Hell, having a handful of dried fruit every day would have resolved some of the vitamin C and iron deficiencies. A banana? Cereal? A sandwich with salad?

The kitten thing - yeah, that was cruel of her to the cat and plain nasty to you, but the food thing - not so much.

Jobseeker19 · 10/12/2020 11:36

Arrange a baby shower for me.
Then invited all of her friends.
Then she opened my cards and presents when I was asleep.
Then she took all of the money and said how much do you think I spent on this baby shower?

MadeForThis · 10/12/2020 11:37

@MessyMummy15 your ex didn't share his meal with you? I can see why he's an ex!

Flyingpig47 · 10/12/2020 11:40

My ex mil told me it was all my fault that my ex stole my money and cheated on me because I wasn't a very good cook and didn't make him nice meals.

Bustenhalter · 10/12/2020 11:41

It’s my FILs that are the dickheads - but FILs get away with it a lot more don’t they?

DeltaFlyer · 10/12/2020 12:00

I became pregnant around the same time sil was undergoing assessment for IVF. We had both being trying but where I had previous miscarriages Sil was unfortunately struggling to even conceive due to having a cyst and a dh with low sperm count.
When we announced at 12 weeks MIL cried as it wasnt her dd who was expecting. Anytime dh mentioned the pregnancy we had the same reaction so we stopped mentioning it as didn't want to upset her. When I was around 30 weeks Sil came to us to say that MIL was upset as she felt uninvolved in the pregnancy so she came with me to a growth scan and made a scene in the waiting room about hoping her dd got to experience the same.
Made a nuisance of herself when she kept turning up uninvited at the hospital after csection and at house including opening doors on my breastfeeding and opening my mail.

Not long after ds was born sil became pregnant via ivf and announced the baby would be a girl. MIL getting upset as the name wouldnt be announced before the birth, making threats to never see the baby.

Mil is currently not speaking to us as we won't go to their house on Xmas day for an hour. I'm hosting df as otherwise he would be alone, I did invite in-laws too but they want to stay at home to be available for Sil in case her plans with her dh's family fall through. We could go but this would mean kicking my dad out to do so and I wont do that.

MessyMummy15 · 10/12/2020 12:00

@EdwardBear1920
Yeah it does seem a bit extreme when I read it back. I purposely left out some details to stop it getting too heavy but I was very young and only had a Saturday job while I studied so all the money I had was basically going to her for "rent"
I did get one solid meal a week when I used to go visit my dad.
She would also yell at me for some small reason every time I went downstairs to use the kitchen so I just stopped trying altogether. The food I had was kept in a drawer in the bedroom and included bottles of water, crisps, biscuits and nuts etc. But I had to ration it.
The whole situation was actually extremely abusive and I'm glad I know better now but at the time as a teenager I just took it for what it was. 🤷🏻‍♀️

My ex MIL came to stay and whilst she was there I reminded my ex he still hadn’t ironed his work shirts, which had been hanging all round the bedrom for the weekend. Ex MIL looked at me enquiringly and said ‘Don’t you iron his shirts for him’ I replied ‘No, he does his shirts as I don’t have any clothes that need ironing’. She looked crestfallen and said to ExH very seriously ‘If I was married to you i’d wash and iron all your shirts for you’. Funnily enough I cottoned on to what a weird statement this was. I’m not sure if she was trying to make me feel jealous. I just replied ‘But you are not married to him and you won’t ever be because he is YOUR SON!’. I soon realised that they were hopelessly enmeshed and she enabled him to basically be a 5yo whilst in her company. We ended up divorcing. I think I had a lucky escape!

LaBellina · 10/12/2020 12:14

Mine reorganized my whole wardrobe closet including underwear drawer when I was on holiday with my ex.
I was livid when I found out.
Great way to destroy the post holiday mood Angry

formerbabe · 10/12/2020 12:18

We were having a lovely Christmas day with my family...kids playing with cousins. We had to cut it short to pick mil up from bil to drive her home. She is too tight to pay for a taxi despite being very wealthy. We were so skint that year we could barely afford the petrol. We picked her up, cutting the dcs Christmas day short, she sat in the car in silence for over an hour. Barely said thank you or happy Christmas. I was seething.

Mumisnotmyonlyname · 10/12/2020 12:26

To be honest OP I think you are the unreasonable one in the story. Taking free accommodation then criticising your MiLs house habits and bringing cats to her house. Yes she sounds really eccentric but that's her right and there was always a local hotel you could have tried, I'm sure.

It's getting like "Take a break" on here.

SirGawain · 10/12/2020 12:33

Also when we lived with her, she insisted she take care of the money we were saving for or own place.
And you gave it to her!!!!!

cricketmum84 · 10/12/2020 12:38

Mine likes to hold up SILs size 8 clothes to show me how tiny they are. (She does all her washing and ironing even though she is 40 with no kids to look after)

I'm a size 16 with massive body confidence issues.

She also likes to tell me how little she weighs every time we speak.
