to wonder what happens to the new craze of door bows when it’s pissing down?

Obviously I’ve got lots of time spare during my furloughed days!

Seriously though, what happens to these bows in inclement weather?

I also LOVE lights on outdoor real growing trees.

Of course that is lovely. Confused

Janegrey333 · 10/12/2020 10:03

@Festivespooks

Wow, so much hate for bows. I don't have one but I don't hate them. They're obviously seen as a lower class Christmas effort eh Hmm
Well, they’re certainly not aspirational.
Averyyounggrandmaofsix · 10/12/2020 10:05

Christ it's getting so snobby on here, and I don't like the bows but I don't look down on those that have them. They don't seem as fashionable here as they were but all those I have ever seen have some kind of weather protection like a porch. Or are porches chavvy now?

JamieLeeCurtains · 10/12/2020 10:09

I really wouldn't want to draw attention to my house.

mummydoris2006 · 10/12/2020 10:37

I have a bright red one which I love! Must say after reading a lot of these smug judgemental comments it just makes me love it even more. After the shitshower that has been 2020 putting the Christmas decs up last week gave us some sense of normality. I also spoke to my postie about placing my post elsewhere because contrary to what some posters think about the intelligence or sophstication of people with door bows I realised it may cause an issue Xmas Wink

Chrysanthemum5 · 10/12/2020 12:00

I don't have one but I like them and I also like the bows around houses. They aren't a thing round here so I've not seen them in real life but they look cheerful

I'll get my coat Smile

IndieTara · 10/12/2020 12:38

There are some seriously unpleasant snobbish people on here. I'm looking at you @Janegrey333 especially .
Seriously who cares if people have door bows or lights or other un mumsnetty 'tat' on or outside their houses.
It's been an absolutely rubbish year for so many families. Stop being so bloody judgmental and accept that people ( and their kids ) want a bit of festive cheer that maybe they wouldn't normally go for.
Try saying Merry Christmas instead of Bah Humbug.

HitthatroadJack · 10/12/2020 13:02

IndieTara
in fairness, they make the neighbourhood look shit. I am lucky, they don't seem to exist around here, long may it last!

@JamieLeeCurtains

I really wouldn't want to draw attention to my house.
Nor me but I have never seen such a thing. What sort of places have them?

I think a few white lights on bushes and trees in the front are quite pleasant but cannot imagine a bow.

Thismustbelove · 10/12/2020 17:10

I saw my first dressed door!!! My kids go to school in an affluent area. Houses typically 750K-1M upwards and one of the houses has its door dressed with overhead bushy green foliage and white lights. I have to say on a cold, wet, dark evening, it looked beautiful. The door is just a few steps back from the footpath. Where I live it would be pulled down/vandalised but it’s very safe in the area it’s in. It truly looked wonderful. I am converted. Sadly in my modest semi d, it would look ridiculous :-(

LuaDipa · 10/12/2020 20:29

I’ve never heard of door bows but I’ll be ordering one next year. I absolutely love Christmas tat. We have a ridiculous number of trees in the house (real and appalled gasp artificial), garlands everywhere and stick lights on pretty much everything. My dh laughs at my ‘chavving up the house’, but secretly loves it as much as I do. If you can’t go ott at Christmas, when can you?🤷🏻‍♀️

Popcornriver · 10/12/2020 20:58

I saw a house with one of these the other day. Thought it looked quite nice Confused

But yeah I can see the poor posties having a bit of a struggle.

Changi · 10/12/2020 21:05

I love seeing over-the-top Christmas tat on other people's houses.

Foliage and lights is not a 'door bow'.

Yeah, other people's.
Pinkfreesias · 10/12/2020 21:16

They've been popular here in Scotland for years. If they can survive our winter, I'm sure they'll be ok further south.

Saz12 · 10/12/2020 21:24

It’s perfectly possible to say “they’re not to my taste” or “I don’t have one” instead of some sort of OTT mean girl/ toddler reaction.

KarlKennedysDurianFruit · 10/12/2020 21:32

Old hat here in Essex, even some shops have them! I saw someone with one on the roof of their car the other day and fairy lights around the back window, and the 'powered by fairy dust' sticker of course.
The house opposite me looks like an elf on acid threw up mid hallucination, light up figures, flashing 6ft candy canes, disco projector on the front of the house, flashing (outnofnsync) multi colour lights top to bottom of every single window. A middle aged couple who never have any visitors or guests, and are rude to all other neighbours live there so I can't imagine it's about Christmas spirit. DS thinks it's amazing.....

Cakles2010 · 10/12/2020 21:33

They are disgusting most tacky thing I've seen

EveryDayIsADuvetDay · 10/12/2020 22:04

I've not seen any... one even

There's a block of flats that I passed on the way to work, a week or so back someone had hung a naice wreath on a comunal tree in the garden.
A few days later, another one appeared, larger, less naice...
And then another
Todays monstrosity - a wreath with flashing bloody lights.

A week to go - I wonder how many more will appear
It's not a huge tree Xmas Hmm

D4rwin · 10/12/2020 22:08

About as tasteful as any Christmas tackiness! I love how Christmas seems to be all about implying your tat is somehow classier than your neighbours tat.

tilder · 10/12/2020 22:30

Some seriously defensive posters on here. People are allowed an opinion you know. Provided they don't make personal attacks about posters as per a pp. That's pretty vile. Either report or leave.

Janegrey333 · 11/12/2020 01:05

@HitthatroadJack

IndieTara in fairness, they make the neighbourhood look shit. I am lucky, they don't seem to exist around here, long may it last!
Nor where I live. Smile
Thismustbelove · 11/12/2020 01:18

Foliage and lights is not a 'door bow'

The conversation moved on to door reveals and outside decorations in general some time ago. Do keep up!

Emerald123 · 11/12/2020 01:35

After nearly a year sat inside our houses, tier 3 here since July,if my neighbours want to put rainbow door bows complete with flashing lights and unicorn dust and it makes them happy - Merry Christmas, do it.
