To wonder how Kate Hudson sleeps at night (Fabletics)?

evenmoreforthemoor · 06/12/2020 17:59

Yet another friend duped by Fabletics and their offers.

It relies on busy people, usually without much cash thinking that their offer is too good to be true before they find out a few weeks later that another £44 has gone out of their account and that they actually signed up to a subscription for leggings.

It's just such a seedy way for someone who is already well off, who lives a pious yoga/spiritual life splashed all over Instagram, to make more money.

Sorry, just looked at the website. It clearly states to become a vip member to avoid the monthly subscribtion

It is not Kate Hudson’s fault your friend can’t be bothered to read the webpage

MyGazeboisLeaking · 06/12/2020 18:51

It is also pretty hard to quickly find out how to skip the month on the website.

It's definitely not on the front page when you sign in.

evenmoreforthemoor · 06/12/2020 18:52

@mrsmalcolmreynolds

Whatever their website is, I doubt it's obtuse as that means slow to understand. It may be obscure?
Meant abtruse.

Apologies.

I signed up to get the leggings and cancelled the subscription when they arrived. It wasn’t too difficult, but I agree that it could be very easy to forget that you’ve signed up.

Dumbie · 06/12/2020 18:52

I never knew it was a subscription service! I've gone to purchase from them before via an instagram influencer but never quite made it through the checkout. Glad I didn't now.

LivingDeadGirlUK · 06/12/2020 18:52

@MotherForker

Do you know all gyms rely on this business model too? No gym could cope if everyone who paid membership turned up regularly.
I was thinking this might be where they got the idea from tbh, although it doesn't really work as well as access to a product instead of access to a service though.
vanillandhoney · 06/12/2020 18:52
@vanillandhoney I don't think its comparable to Netflix or a beauty box because in both these cases you are getting a product or service each month. This is just taking some money out your account so you can possibly buy some leggings. They aren't sending out a product each month. I guess you could say they are paying for the service of being allowed to buy some of their leggings.

Does anyone actually want a subscription service for leggings? If everyone is just signing up for the offer and then cancelling then what's the point?
It's the same principle though.

For example with Prime, you pay a flat rate of say, £7.99 per month regardless of whether you get thirty deliveries or none. You pay for the option to use their service, the same as with Fabletics.

If you just want the introductory offer, take it, pay the cheap price for the leggings and cancel the service as soon as your order arrives. I take advantage of introductory offers all the time - what I don't do is complain to the companies involved because I've forgotten to cancel my subscription.

If people don't want a legging subscription service, they don't need to pay for one. I really don't see the issue at all I'm afraid.

evenmoreforthemoor · 06/12/2020 18:53

@tappingintherain

What's Kate Hudson's business in this? She got paid to promote stuff and she did. What do you want from her - to do the research for you?

What I'm yet to understand is why some people buy stuff because a celeb is promoting it. I mean really?!

She founded it, it's her business.

I agree on the other point!

Bummsbet · 06/12/2020 18:53

I got 'stung' by this about 7 years ago, before it was quite so obviously a subscription service. BUT it was completely my own fault for, A) being naive and B) not reading it all properly when I signed up.
It's not that different from what Beauty Pie is doing and people rave about that!

AcornAutumn · 06/12/2020 18:54

I’m so intrigued I’ve just looked via the work phone - I don’t use a smart phone personally.

It’s exactly the same page as my computer

It says £24 when you become a VIP with a line about subscriptions on the landing page.

Can you really go through the whole buying process without even seeing a line about the subs per month?

vanillandhoney · 06/12/2020 18:56
@vanillandhoney

What first page are you looking at?!

7 x 5 star reviews
8 x 1 star reviews
4 x 2 star reviews
The one on my browser was mostly green reviews.

Anyway, it's up to the consumer to be smart and pay attention when they shop. Too many people just stick their card details into any site they come across and don't actually think about what they're signing up for.

It's not the company's fault if people forget to cancel or don't read properly before deciding to purchase.

emilyfrost · 06/12/2020 18:56

YABU. It’s not deceptive; your friend just didn’t read it properly.

AcornAutumn · 06/12/2020 18:56

@SoupDragon

It's exactly the same as the book clubs from years ago isn't it?
I used to belong to one, it was brilliant! But I vaguely remember people saying they’d signed up by accident or whatever, which confused me.
MyGazeboisLeaking · 06/12/2020 18:57

I would say absent members are
built in to their projections - people who won't get round to ^ cancelling and wont^ take the products each month.

It's not illegal but it feels unethical. It's not a business model that I would be proud to stand by, to be honest.^^

AccidentallyOnPurpose · 06/12/2020 18:57

How is it not obvious?

That's right there on the first page.

Just fab works in a similar way, as do other subscriptions services.

It's like moaning a shop has adverts for "up to 75% off" ,but the thing you want is only 5 off and you didn't see the "up to".

doadeer · 06/12/2020 18:58

It's very obvious to me and easy-ish to cancel. I don't find it any worse than other subscriptions. It's also easy to skip a month.

Why is it unethical? People aren't forced to sign up to these things. If you're not going to go regularly, use a "pay as you go" type service instead.

Nobody is forced to sign up for a service they're not going to use. Is the consumer no longer responsible for their actions?

tappingintherain · 06/12/2020 19:00

Ah sorry didn't realise. Don't follow her or the business. Now makes sense.

Zeetah · 06/12/2020 19:00

Why would anyone want a subscription for leggings?!
Unless they are poor quality and don’t last very long???

NoPainNoTartine · 06/12/2020 19:02

Now it's the company's fault if people are stupid?
Jeeez, I have heard everything.

There's a market for subscription legging, it's a very good idea. If you don't want to pay a monthly subscription, then .... don't Confused

hedgehogger1 · 06/12/2020 19:02

How much are these leggings and how many pairs does one person need? No wonder the planet is fucked

LivingDeadGirlUK · 06/12/2020 19:04

@vanillandhoney not sure why I can't quote you, I do see the comparison you are making but I just don't get how its a viable business model for leggings if they haven't just set it up that way to get extra money from the people who forget to skip or cancel. I've had months when I've not really used my Netflix account but I keep it because its a service I want to use in the future. The Fabletics model is kinda like a savings account but you can only spend the money on leggings (I'm not sure if they sell other sportsware), if you didn't pay the subscription you would still have the same money to buy leggings and you could buy them from anywhere!

Lots of people saying you 'simply' have to cancel after getting the special offer, but everyone can't be doing this or it would make the business model completely pointless. One PP has said they used the subscription for a substantial amount of workout gear which is fair enough but how common is that?

You could set up a subscription model for anything, but that doesn't mean that you should!

FitterHappierMoreProductive · 06/12/2020 19:05

It feels dodgy to me. Not used them, although I had heard of them - because I’m a runner an leggings buyer. Hadn’t realised they were a subscription service til this thread, so it’s not universally known. Looking at the website, I can see quite clearly it’s a subscription service - but my oldest child (age 17) has severe dyslexia, gets overwhelmed with large chunks of text, is just looking for keywords, and I could totally see him missing the fact he was signing up to a subscription. And let’s face it, it’s not what you expect, because no one wants new leggings every month! Which is the reason it isn’t like gousto / Netflix etc because they are things people tend to want every month. It’s a scammer’s business model and anyone who suggests otherwise is being obtuse because this is AIBU.

NoPainNoTartine · 06/12/2020 19:05

@Zeetah

Plenty of women live in leggings, and like to add to their collection, why not. It can be for home, or for their job. If they are happy with the product and don't want to shop around to get new stuff, it's a good idea.

I see some mums on the school run wearing sports legging every single day, and I know it's not their job. They look great and must be comfy, and it's not inappropriate like pjs.

doadeer · 06/12/2020 19:05

I used to do yoga and pilates every day and I had a huge leggings collection haha... They are really nice quality IMO
