To have the heating on all day?

Dreamingofsunnydays1 · 06/12/2020 13:42

Seeing as we are at home most of the time at the moment, I've been putting the heating on for about 12 hours a day. We are having a cold spell at the moment and it's just so cold without it, especially as I'm anaemic and get very cold hands.

We have it on 15c in the day, and 18c for an hour in the morning and evening.

Is anyone else the same?

Depends on your preference and location and if you can afford it

Sexnotgender · 06/12/2020 13:45

Not unreasonable at all, I refuse to be a Martyr.

I’ll have extra layers and a blanket but if the heating needs to be on it goes on.

I have hive heating so easy just to boost rooms as necessary.

ApolloandDaphne · 06/12/2020 13:45

Of course I have the heating on all day. It is cold. Mine is at 20 degrees. 15 would still feel very cold to me and I am not really a cold person.

Maireas · 06/12/2020 13:45

No. I've got it on for longer and at a higher temperature. Each to their own. Comfort, choice, budget.

Lazypuppy · 06/12/2020 13:46

Surely its not on all day, and only fires when the temp drops?

If you actually have it on and firing all day then i would say YABU, put extra layers on, blankets, shut doors to rooms to keep heat in etc.

Sparklingbrook · 06/12/2020 13:46

I do too, but on a constant 20, but it's December and cold outside, are you worried?

Thatwentbadly · 06/12/2020 13:46

I have it set to 19c and on from 7 to 7 at the moment.

Flaunch · 06/12/2020 13:47

Your cold because your house is too cold. 15° is not warm enough for anyone to be comfortable.

NannyR · 06/12/2020 13:47

If you can afford it, why not? I have mine on at around 16 during the day at the weekend, put it up to 18/19 in the evenings, I don't have mine on during weekdays as there is no-one in the house.

MushMonster · 06/12/2020 13:47

Same here. Friday I forgot to turn it off and we were not home!

MollyButton · 06/12/2020 13:47

Thats so cold! We have ours on at 20 for most of the day when people are here - 18 when people are out/night.My bedroom is often colder, but we have thermostats on radiators. If you can afford it then being warm is important.

Audreyseyebrows · 06/12/2020 13:49

Who thinks that you shouldn’t?

If you are cold put it on. We have our fire lit all day if we are home.

Walkacrossthesand · 06/12/2020 13:49

As long as you're all wearing warm clothes - unless your house is brilliantly insulated & your heat source is 100% renewable, or your home includes a frail/vulnerable person, I don't think we should be heating our houses up to be warm enough to waft around in T-shirts & lightweight clothes in the winter. But as pp said, ultimately it's up to you 🤷‍♀️

SchrodingersImmigrant · 06/12/2020 13:51

Mine is on about 17 during the day and 19 in the evening. It's not on all the time though because house is well insulated.

It really depends on your house and climate. You would be unreasonable in some eay to have it on 25 24/7 or have 10' at home for refusing to turn it on. But yours dound absolutely ok if you are comfortable

UglyHoose · 06/12/2020 13:51

I would be so uncomfortable at that temperature, if we are home the heating is somewhere around 25 degrees. I really feel the cold and am sitting in a jumper and with a blanket over me too.

Who says YABU?

Plexie · 06/12/2020 13:52

Ours is currently on for 14 hours a day; thermostat set at 20 degrees but the house never heats up to that level - reaches 18 degrees at the most. I'm used to wearing 4 layers of clothing even with the heating on.

NoPainNoTartine · 06/12/2020 13:55

My heating is on 24 hours a day!

I prefer a lower setting and a constantly warm house, I just turn off the radiators in the bedrooms at night.

The alternative is blasting the heating first thing in the morning, having a cold house that only warms up after you are ready. Cannot see the point in that frankly.

If you are stuck at a desk all day and get cold anyway, I strongly recommend ugg boots as slippers (thick insulating sole and toasty fur) and an electric blanket. I hate being cold but I also hate stuffy rooms Grin

RaspberryCoulis · 06/12/2020 13:57

I hate these competitive "how cold do you have your house threads" - who cares? Honestly, nobody's giving out gold medals to those who have their thermostat set at 15c, or a silver to those who have heating morning and evening only.

It's December. It's cold. It was -3c in Glasgow this morning. Our thermostat is set to 20c and the heating will click in when it drops below that. The boiler isn't firing at the moment because it's bright and sunny and the sun is heating the house.

I would be far too cold at 15c so it's hardly surprising that the OP is too.

soschreibfaul · 06/12/2020 14:04

Completely agree. I used to have colleagues like this. It's different if you're unfortunate and can't afford the heating, but otherwise have your home comfortable, for goodness sake.

18 through the day and 20 in the evening for me.

vanillandhoney · 06/12/2020 14:08

15 degrees is very low! No wonder you're cold.

PurpleIsTheColour · 06/12/2020 14:09

Mine is on 25 degrees as I’m always cold and hate wearing layers of clothes at home, but each to their own. If you can afford it then I don’t see why not. We have our heating on for 14-16 hours every day of the week and I wouldn’t change it for anything. 😉 however, not sure how you’re not freezing at 15 degrees OP

SchrodingersImmigrant · 06/12/2020 14:10

15' in UK is generally a shorts weather though😂

VanityWitch · 06/12/2020 14:11

No way! Not U. We have ours on all day at the moment too. Dd is having to self isolate at the moment, so we are all mainly stuck in the house. I'm not going to be cold while we are stuck inside.

NoPainNoTartine · 06/12/2020 14:12

What I hate more are the threads when there is a lodger or an au-pair involved, and the home owner is either outraged or point blank refusing for them to have the heating on. How vile can people get!

LEELULUMPKIN · 06/12/2020 14:12

Mine is on at 20 degrees constantly and 23 if I'm really freezing. I've got 3 layers on and thermal socks too.

My hands are still like ice as I type this.

Might put the little portable heater on in a min too.

I can afford it and I am too old to sit here in misery.
