To have the heating on all day?

Dreamingofsunnydays1 · 06/12/2020 13:42

Seeing as we are at home most of the time at the moment, I've been putting the heating on for about 12 hours a day. We are having a cold spell at the moment and it's just so cold without it, especially as I'm anaemic and get very cold hands.

We have it on 15c in the day, and 18c for an hour in the morning and evening.

Is anyone else the same?

My is on 24/7 so I don't feel bad about it at all. Thermostat is set at 21.5 5am-10pm and 19.5 9pm-5am, we live in an A+ energy rated new build tho so holds its heat very well, the heating doesn't seem to click on over night as the temperature doesn't drop below 19.5. We pay £53 an month dual fuel so doesn't really cost us very much.

claireb7rg · 06/12/2020 14:53

Ours is set to 15 overnight and during the day if we are both out. I'm wfh (partner works outside home) and it's set to 20 during the day at the moment.

I have underactive thyroid and fibromyalgia and feel the cold. Occasionally I'll boost the room I work in to 21.

No way could I sit working in a house that was at 15

Mylittleturkeysandwich · 06/12/2020 14:57

We are by no means well off, especially this year, but my priorities start with mortgage, food and heat. I won't freeze us unless I have no choice. When DS is at nursery we do turn it off and wear dressing gowns etc.

LightasaBreeze · 06/12/2020 15:05

We have it on from 6 in the morning until 10 at night set at 20c, I don't like it on overnight though, I'm retired and DH wfh.

squeekums · 06/12/2020 15:37

in winter ours is 24-26 constantly
i despise the cold
comfort over cost to me

Baaaahhhhh · 06/12/2020 15:37

Mines on from early morning until late at night, set for 21c. It goes on and off all day, and as we have thermostats in all the rooms, will come on if required in those rooms. I think it is better to keep a constant reasonable heat widely in the house, rather than heat up from dead cold. We keep all the doors open, so no part of the house is ever freezing. Perhaps I am wrong, but it would make sense to keep an ambient heat going throughout.

Sweettea1 · 06/12/2020 15:37

My themo is at the highest and its still freezing living room never feels warm i have a little blow heater in there aswell as radiator not sure why it never gets warm I end up sitting up stairs to watch TV once kids go to bed.

Riapia · 06/12/2020 15:48

6.00 am - 10.30 pm set at 25. All year.
No point in having CH and not being warm.

Might be coming from the floor. Ours had no underlaye originally. It made massive difference
cariadlet · 06/12/2020 15:49

It's interesting to see what temperatures people set their thermostats to.

I bought a digital thermometer to sit on my desk because I was curious to see just how cold my classroom is (we have to have the windows open because of covid). It only arrived on Thursday but was mostly showing around 13 or 14 degrees. My colleague next door has had one a bit longer and said that one day her classroom got down to 9.5 degrees! Next week is supposed to be colder. 🙁

I don't know why anyone would avoid putting their heating on unless it's literally because they cannot afford the bills.

My dad was always like this, moaning about us putting the heating on in the afternoon when we could afford it. I was so cold once I even offered him my pocket money to pay for it! (He didn't take it)

PattyPan · 06/12/2020 16:05

Ours is technically on all the time but it’s set to 14 at night and 17 when DP is home. When it’s just me at home I turn it back down to 14. Then it just clicks on when it needs to.

Parker231 · 06/12/2020 16:10

One of the (very few) downsides of wfh is having the heating on all day. Big old house which is always expensive to heat.

We have plenty of money but a) I am environmentally conscious so try to avoid using energy as much as possible (eg don’t have tumble dryer or hair dryer, 4 minute showers etc) and b) I don’t like how it feels with the heating on. Having it too warm makes us lie on the sofa and doze/stare at phones etc. Keeping it on the cooler side means we move around more and actually do stuff. If it’s 18 or higher then I have to take my jumper off because I get too hot doing stuff. I don’t really feel the cold but my DP does so it basically goes on just for him (or guests). I wouldn’t let him suffer like you did in your story!
Angel2702 · 06/12/2020 16:19

Ours is on from 6am until 9pm at 20. It only comes on when it goes below so not on all the time.

15 is very cold it’s not even room temp for a bedroom which is 18, I wouldn’t even feel like the heating was on if it was that low.

Skipsurvey · 06/12/2020 16:44

dd is at uni in a house share, one of her flatmates and laid down the rules of when the heating should be on
the problem with wfh and online studying is people are far more likely to be at home, having to heat their houses all hours.

veeeeh · 06/12/2020 16:47

I am not in UK, but I presume this is a feature there too. We do a "level pay" thing, where we pay a set amount every month x 12 months. So credit builds up for the Winter and bills remain the same or just a little over during colder months.

WFH, never feel cold. House well insulated, under floorboards foil and whatever, attic to within an inch of its life and triple glazed windows.

But if we feel cold, on it goes as much as needed.

MiniTheMinx · 06/12/2020 16:51

Heating goes on and stays on with the first really cold spell and stays on until its warmer. Set at 18 and 24hrs. The heating engineer said it was cheaper to keep the house warm than heat it from cold.

formerbabe · 06/12/2020 16:51

I'm amazed people have it on all day...we only bother in the evening's from about 6-11pm. Our house doesn't feel especially cold..I hate boiling hot houses. My sil has the heating on full blast constantly...if we go round, I feel physically sick from it and pretend I've left stuff in the car so I've got an excuse to escape it for a few minutes.

NoPainNoTartine · 06/12/2020 16:52

Even when we were not working from home, we kept the heating on during the day. It was hardly worth shutting it down for the few hours the kids were out of the house, and restarting it early enough that the house would have warmed up by the time they came back.

That's also why it's kept on at night. If one of us goes to bed around midnight, and the other one (or the same one!) is up at 5 or 6, it would mean having the heating kick off at 4am to warm up in time.

Completely unnecessary fuss. Now if you prefer your house cool, nothing wrong with it!

Requinblanc · 06/12/2020 16:52

I am in a flat in London and I have not needed the heating on yet. I am on the top floor so I think my neighbours' heating coming from the flats below and next door is keeping the building is general fairly warm. Wearing a tee shirt and have one window open...I think I am actually a Viking :) when it comes to the cold, I suppose people all different tolerance to it. I rarely have had the heating on for the past 20 years while living in London. Maybe a handful of times if there is snow.

NoPainNoTartine · 06/12/2020 16:54

far too cold for us if I do the same. I find the house stays warm if the heating is constant, I personally hate jumping from cold to too hot if the heating comes back up. I also like a warm bathroom Grin the windows are opened just enough to leave some air circulating, I don't open then fully the entire day.

On the plus side, we love summer and none of my kids has ever complained that it was too hot

FourTeaFallOut · 06/12/2020 16:54

Thermostat set to a constant 21 degrees through the day and we let it drop to 17 through the night, although it doesn't often get that low.

Dontforgetyourbrolly · 06/12/2020 16:55

When I lived in a flat in London I literally only needed the heating on for an hour in the evening if that !

Purplecatshopaholic · 06/12/2020 16:58

I refuse to be cold. My heating is on virtually all the time just now, usually around 24.
