To have the heating on all day?

Dreamingofsunnydays1 · 06/12/2020 13:42

Seeing as we are at home most of the time at the moment, I've been putting the heating on for about 12 hours a day. We are having a cold spell at the moment and it's just so cold without it, especially as I'm anaemic and get very cold hands.

We have it on 15c in the day, and 18c for an hour in the morning and evening.

Is anyone else the same?

And to all those people who have their heating at 23 or 25 and are still freezing - get your thyroid levels tested. I have an underactive thyroid and that was one of my main symptoms, I was never warm in winter, constantly frozen when everyone else in the house was melting.

Ilovesugar · 06/12/2020 14:16

21c from 6-10am then off and set down to 16c so it will click on if really cold. House tends to stay 19-21c during this time. Then back on upto 21c 4-7pm

Miljea · 06/12/2020 14:19

The number on your thermostat is neither here nor there, really, isn't it? What and how it registers are entirely dependent on where in the house it is located.

I think mine is on about 21, but I crank it up if I'm feeling cold. I also keep the heating 'on' all year, but it never comes on if the thermostat never fires it.

I am in the fortunate position of not having to worry about the costs, but there is always someone home all day; currently three to four adults!

However, we don't have the radiator on in our bedroom at all.

I do smile when I recall growing up when every time you opened a door, there's be a shout of 'shut the door!', Only the living room was heated and the rest of the house was like a witch's tit. And yes, ice forming on the inside of the windows!

Then as we grew up and left, mum started heating the entire house to nuclear.

But my DH is Australian and I hear myself yelling at him 'shut the door!' as he sashays out to the bin leaving the front door open...

16C is the minimum guideline for offices we both wfh (Always have done) in the winter we leave heating on in the rooms we use and the kitchen, we don't waft around in t-shirts but neither are we wearing coats or blankets inside we aim for 18-20C

There areno prizes for heating martyrs, there is always someone on these threads that feels like the surface of the sun at 14C and someone else that thinks below 22 is freezing the reality is that comfortable room temperature kiss 18-21C some prefer it on lower side others higher side, some prefer warmth but can't afford it,

grassisjeweled · 06/12/2020 14:20

Ours is set to 19. I also have a small heater in my 'office' if I feel chilly.

grassisjeweled · 06/12/2020 14:20

And I'm at home all day too.

BitterAndOnlySlightlyTwisted · 06/12/2020 14:20

To me, 15 degrees seems really Spartan. Far too chilly.

This is the first winter of my retirement, so at the moment I have my heating on for 15 hours a day at 20 degrees. The boiler isn’t working most of the time, just now and then when the temperature drops. If the gas bill turns out to be much more than I’m comfortable with I’ll have to rethink. To be fair I only have the radiators on in the living-room and the bathroom.

islockdownoveryet · 06/12/2020 14:21

If your cold you put it on .
Mine goes on when I get up and is on till 10pm .
As I'm wfh some days and dh & dd work shifts there is usually someone in most days .
I have a smart meter too so I see the cost climb but it's winter and I refuse to sit in a cold house . I just try and keep it low in the day and turn radiators off in rooms that aren't used .

NoPainNoTartine · 06/12/2020 14:22

If people could maintain reasonable temperatures during the winter, there would be less moaning about dying of heat when it's barely 25 outside in the summer....

BecomeStronger · 06/12/2020 14:23

I have the heating set at 15 during the day and it very rarely comes on, if we're in and no being particularly active, I'd turn it up to 19. I.e. if my cleaning the bathroom, 15 is warm enough for me, but not for watching a film.

If your heating is really running to maintain 15 degrees, do you need to look at your insulation?

grassisjeweled · 06/12/2020 14:24

Bitter, it will probably be cheaper than you think. If it's set to a constant temperature it won't keep clicking on and off all the time

AlwaysLatte · 06/12/2020 14:26

Ours is on all day every day too - set for 19 degrees. Not at night though - it goes off at 11pm and comes on at 6.00 am. Too cold not to have the heating on at the moment!

Bringbackthestrips · 06/12/2020 14:28

Ours doesn’t even kick in at 15. We have it on a 15 overnight & it occasionally kicks in then.
It’s at 18 at the moment because I’ve been out for a walk & I'm freezing but DH is sat in a t shirt!

KarlKennedysDurianFruit · 06/12/2020 14:28

Ours is on 23 during the day and 20 overnight, thermostat is upstairs though and it's always a couple of degrees warmer up there than downstairs, so living room temperature is around 21 during the day. It kicks in when it gets cold then goes off when it reaches temperature. Isn't that the point of thermostats?

Frannyhy · 06/12/2020 14:29

I think I am really a lizard because I’m at 15 right now and comfortable. The heating goes on in the morning for an hour at 20, then two hours in the evening at 20.

I have airbnb guests. I tell them this is how I live before I take a booking, but do have a small heater in their room. If they don’t like it they can go elsewhere.

ShopTattsyrup · 06/12/2020 14:29

15 degrees for me most of the day if I'm home, but I'm a warm blooded person so that's comfortable for me while wearing a jumper and woolly socks 🤷‍♀️ I usually whack it up a smidge if I'm having a bath in the evening or want to give the washing a head start drying.

Weebitawks · 06/12/2020 14:30

Surely its not on all day, and only fires when the temp drops?

If you actually have it on and firing all day then i would say YABU, put extra layers on, blankets, shut doors to rooms to keep heat in etc.--

I would say there's a good chance the OP has a fairly cold house if her heating comes on at 15°. I'm in a new build and my heating is set to 18° and never comes on unless I boost it to say 21°.

I don't have the heating on all day but would if my house was below 15°!

toptreeroots1 · 06/12/2020 14:35

Yes on all day but only because we have electric storage heaters.

No heating source in the bathroom or kitchen and they are freezing.
Nice warm lounge and bedrooms though and hallway.
It's 21c in the rooms with the heaters on
Not sure the temp

in bathroom and kitchen but it's cold

It's unusually cold down south for December this year

DiscustinHunAmFummin · 06/12/2020 14:38

I have no idea what number mine is on as it's in a cupboard and I can't see the dial fully. In the morning I turn it until it clicks and if it's really cold I go past the click! I turn it all the way back when I go to bed.

DiscustinHunAmFummin · 06/12/2020 14:39

Also I have no heating in my bathroom either so it's always freezing in there!

Ghostlyglow · 06/12/2020 14:40

I wish! I'm wfh and since the temperature has dropped I'm bloody freezing by the afternoon.

Zoflorabore · 06/12/2020 14:43

God no I would be sick. My house is only a 3 bed semi under 30 years old but it’s warm. South facing garden and always seems toasty.

I have no issue with heating costs at all. Doesn’t worry me, I just only have it on when it’s really cold. I live 7 miles out of Liverpool so not even a warm place.

We do have an electric fire in the living room and i use that too for instant heat.

My ex mil would have the heat on all day every day. I couldn’t stay long.

JessicaPeach · 06/12/2020 14:44

Those that have their heating at 25 in the winter, I always wonder how that works for you in summer because 25 is heatwave, shorts on, bbq weather is it not?!

SpnBaby1967 · 06/12/2020 14:48

Ours is usually set for 18-19 but if I'm cold I'll boost it to 21.

I refuse to be cold..we lived for 2 years without heating and I swear never again!!

Ours is set for 6.30am to 8.30pm. I like it cold during the night, as does DH. Kids dont seem to care either way Grin

Grenlei · 06/12/2020 14:49

Mines on at 20-22 in the day, about 15 at night. I just leave it on all the time. It's never particularly warn. Currently I have 3 layers and socks on to keep warm. If the heating was off overnight you'd be able to see your breath in rooms in the morning.
