To have the heating on all day?

Dreamingofsunnydays1 · 06/12/2020 13:42

Seeing as we are at home most of the time at the moment, I've been putting the heating on for about 12 hours a day. We are having a cold spell at the moment and it's just so cold without it, especially as I'm anaemic and get very cold hands.

We have it on 15c in the day, and 18c for an hour in the morning and evening.

Is anyone else the same?

Our heating is on from 6am to 10pm. It’s on a thermostat and timer so 18 degrees up until 4pm and 20 degrees until bedtime. If we feel cold we regularly put it up higher.
After my husband died I went through a phase of worrying about not being able to afford things and cut back dramatically on my heating. It was the most miserable time of my life. Frankly I’d now go without food before cutting down on heating.

ADMum20 · 06/12/2020 17:55

£230 a month combined gas/electric

😲😲😲😲

Thermostat on 19C all day/evening, off at night with boosts to 24C if I feel chilly (not long had hive fitted so still novelty factor of being about to do this with voice/phone. Will just increase thermostat soon!)

£88 a month gas and electric combined, 4 bed detached.

Is this really worthy of asking the entire world? Do what suits you.

pompey38 · 06/12/2020 17:59

18 degrees is putting your heating on??? 😂

LoveMyKidsAndCats · 06/12/2020 17:59

Yep and we have little heaters currently got one on my feet feels lovely. Too cold.

DinoGreen · 06/12/2020 18:00

£230 a month 😮😮😮

We live in a well insulated new build. We have a smart thermostat and set it for different temperatures at different times of day. It has a blast at 20 degrees from 7am-9am and in the evening from 5pm-8pm. The rest of the time it is set to 17. When I am working from home sitting still 17 does feel a bit chilly tbh but I often make a hot water bottle to cuddle and wear a thick jumper.

We pay £65 a month dual fuel and that includes charging an electric car twice a week. We pay the same throughout the whole year so that it averages out, we’re probably using more like £80/90 a month in the winter and only £40ish in the summer.

PurpleIsTheColour · 06/12/2020 18:04

£80-90 in the winter for gas and electric combined, that’s for a 2 bed terraced with heating on for 16ish hours a day at 25c

providentglue · 06/12/2020 18:04

I never understand the AIBU posts about people putting their heating on. It's a weird game to play on the internet.

PaperMonster · 06/12/2020 18:05

In the winter months we use between £7 and £10 a day when we’re at home and have the heaters on most of the day. Usually about £4 when at work and the heaters are on two hours of a morning and about four hours of an evening. If we were to keep our water heater on that would be an extra £3 a day. We’re all electric. It’s crazy.

We have ours on all the time. It’s set to 20 in the mornings and evenings and 18 during the day when we would be out at work if we weren’t WFH. Then at night it’s set to 7 so I doubt it’ll come on during the night. It’s usually ok at 18 during the day but if we get cold, we’ll give it a boost.

Mine is set to 21c from the hours of 5am- 10pm. It's set for 7c at night.

I hate being cold and refuse to live in a miserable cold house whilst I have the option not to. Had enough of that as a child where we only had one fire in the living room, then later as teens gas heaters in our rooms, which we could not afford to keep on for long.

pinfloy · 06/12/2020 18:17

I've no idea what our gas electric split is - but we pay 60 a month dual fuel.

Three bed semi, two people working from home full time, thermostat set to 20 degrees between 6.30 am and 9pm so heating will kick in whenever it falls below that. Thermostat set to 15 degrees overnight but will rarely fall that low.

TheFluffiestCat · 06/12/2020 18:18

Ours is set to come on at 18 from 6-7 and then from something like 5.30-10. With us both working at home we often put it on most of the day. I hate to think what the gas bill will be like but if we're appropriately dressed for the time of year and still cold, it goes on. I can't turn up on Zoom in my dressing gown, I'd get the sack. I may well be wearing fleece-lined leggings and furry slippers under the desk, but that doesn't stop my fingers freezing.

QueenPaws · 06/12/2020 18:24

Just checked my last bill, £43 in electric, £19 in gas (gas central heating and gas hob, electric oven)
Says I use 8kwh a day of electric and 6 of gas. Electric has gone up a fair bit since WFH

I have never cut back on the heating. When we had to cut back on absolutely everything else the one thing I kept was warm. I'll sit in the dark if it means I can afford to be warm. We also have a lot of throws though. It's not unreasonable to constantly heat your house.

Tinselandbaubauls · 06/12/2020 18:53

Mines on from 6am until about 11pm. The boiler is reading 60 at the moment and I’m still freezing. Upstairs is toasty but not down stairs.

TodayNoMore · 06/12/2020 19:00

Mine's set at 19 between 7am and 10pm (refuse to be cold in my own home), and 12.5 overnight. Even at that temperature, the CH still occasionally kicks in during the night. £40 a month gas and electric combined.

GoBrookeYourself · 06/12/2020 19:13

When we lived in a new build it was 22 all day, and off at night but never went below 19 really. We used to pay £70 gas and electric and that was a 4 bed semi; we’re now in a 4 bed detached and tend to be between 19-20 during the day from 6.30-4ish then up to 21 from 4-8. We have a fire in the living room so once toddler DS goes to bed, we knock the heating down to 16 for overnight and put the fire on because it’s only DH and I watching TV. Bill now about £105 a month gas and electricity all year round

lynsey91 · 06/12/2020 19:14

We have ours set for 22 but it is only on for 3 hours in the morning and 4 hours in the late afternoon/evening.

I am home all day but not normally cold. If I do get cold I turn the heating on. No way am I being cold in my own home

Fuzzyspringroll · 06/12/2020 19:19

Ours is on all day on the weekends and generally off during the week while we are at work. It'll kick in automatically when it gets too cold in the house, though, which is below 14 degrees. Temperatures tend to hover between -2 and 2 degrees outside during the day and currently as low as -5 during the night. It would be crazy not to have the heating on.

AurorasGingerbreadHouse · 06/12/2020 19:26

Yes mine is on 18/19c when we are home during the day, if we are having a lazy afternoon/day then I put it up to 22c. I turn it off when I go to bed most of the year, or down to about 14c in the coldest months.

AurorasGingerbreadHouse · 06/12/2020 19:28

I can't really afford it but there are three things I will not go without, heating, hot water and enough food. Fuck being cold, dirty or hungry.
