To have the heating on all day?

Dreamingofsunnydays1 · 06/12/2020 13:42

Seeing as we are at home most of the time at the moment, I've been putting the heating on for about 12 hours a day. We are having a cold spell at the moment and it's just so cold without it, especially as I'm anaemic and get very cold hands.

We have it on 15c in the day, and 18c for an hour in the morning and evening.

Is anyone else the same?

Genuinely cannot get my head around why you are asking strangers on the internet if it’s OK to put your heating on? 😳

Changi · 06/12/2020 17:02

When we are working from home, ours is on during the day set to 18 degrees. It is off overnight.

According to my Hive app, our house is consistently 1 degree cooler than average for Hive equipped homes.

Stripesnomore · 06/12/2020 17:03

I have my heating on all of the time but most of the time it turns itself off because the house is warm enough. My energy bills are always low.

Parker231 · 06/12/2020 17:04

Sitting down wfh all day - I refuse to be cold.

Branleuse · 06/12/2020 17:05

I have mine set to 19 so the heating comes on if it dips below that. I decided a few years ago that I wasnt prepared to hate 7 or 8 months of the year so much. If i set the thermostat to 19, then it means my front room stays about 16/17 degrees. I still have to wear a jumper and a hat, but im not constantly miserable and cold and upset

Xmassprout · 06/12/2020 17:08

If you feel cold, put the heating on. I don't see the point in being uncomfortable in your own home unnecessarily

We keep the thermostat on 18 here unless we feel especially cold. We wear long sleeves and jumpers to keep warm, I would normally add a dressing gown before turning the heating up.

Sexnotgender · 06/12/2020 17:14

@Purplecatshopaholic

I refuse to be cold. My heating is on virtually all the time just now, usually around 24.
Wow, 24 is toasty!

I find 21 pleasantly warm. Anything under 17 can be a bit crap.

formerbabe · 06/12/2020 17:16

Question for those of you who keep it in 24/7, what are your energy bills like?

I don't know the exact amount without looking it up, but the summer months where we don't use it at all seem to offset the winter months and the direct debit stays the same.
adriennewillfly · 06/12/2020 17:23

What would be more interesting to me would be how high do you set your thermostat (for how long) and how much you are spending on heating?

I have it on for about 4 hours a day (2 hours in the morning and 2 hours in the evening) at 18 degrees. Sometimes I boost it for another 2 hours or use a fan heater for an hour. I'm spending about £100 per month on gas. We have a 1930s terraced with 15 year old double glazing and a conservatory that is like having a window open all the time.

I would love to have the heating on all day but the cost would be astronomical.

MegaClutterSlut · 06/12/2020 17:24

I normally have mine on 17/18 and that stays on most of the day this time of year. Anything higher and its too hot. The inlaws used to have theirs set to 28...me and dh had to keep sitting out in the garden to cool off

adriennewillfly · 06/12/2020 17:24

And our boiler is an old non-condensing type.

pisspants · 06/12/2020 17:27

I have mine on at 22 degrees from 9 till bed then turn it down to 18 or 19. I refuse to be uncomfortable at home and it it costs me a few extra quid then I dont mind

lazylinguist · 06/12/2020 17:27

Ours is set to 18 during the day and 15 at night, but I don't think it actually comes on in the night, as the house doesn't drop below 15 if the heating has been on all day.

I am not sure of the exact amount, but I remember playing around with shutting down the heating when we were out and it did not save us anything.

It might be because it was so cold we cranked the radiators to the maximum!

Skipsurvey · 06/12/2020 17:38

it is warmer in london and other built up areas.

Maybe that's it...we're in London and our house is relatively modern. We've only started putting the heating on two weeks ago. It didn't go on at all in October and the first half of November
bobbiester · 06/12/2020 17:43

We have it on 15c in the day, and 18c for an hour in the morning and evening.

Baffled as to what 1 hour at a different temperature is for?

If you like a particular temperature when you're home - just set the thermostat to that temperature when you're home and leave it.

AldiAisleofCrap · 06/12/2020 17:45

25 degrees minimum all day here , I hate to be cold and am in pain due to disability.

RaspberryCoulis · 06/12/2020 17:45

But that depends on how well insulated your house is. If you live in a super-insulated house with triple glazing, your house will hold its temperature. So if it's 18c when you go to bed at 11pm for example, it won't take much energy to keep it at that temperature overnight - especially when nobody's walking around opening doors and windows.

if however you live in a draughty old house with sash windows and nothing to stop the heat disappearing up through the loft space, you're going to spend a lot more.

AldiAisleofCrap · 06/12/2020 17:46

@adriennewillfly 25 degrees 6am till midnight. Six bed semi £230 a month combined gas/electric.

I assume people mean it's on thermostat. Mine never goes under 17, but that means I don't heat for all afternoon basically. Gas around 45 a month for 3 bed semi. Below 20 in summer😁
Newkitchen123 · 06/12/2020 17:48

If you want the heating on and you're the bill payer and you can afford it, put it on.

Phyzzy · 06/12/2020 17:51

We are at home 24/7and the heating is on at about 21C for 12+ hours a day.
Large badly insulated house.
Oil is unusually cheap atm and costs around £70 a month in winter, much less in summer and electric £90 a month.

ramblingsonthego · 06/12/2020 17:54

Mine is set to 22 from 6am-10pm. Then it is on 18 overnight. Currently I am sat in my clothes, dressing gown and a duvet over me as I got freezing cold on a walk this afternoon. The heating is 22, but I just got chilled to the bone.
