@PleaseLetIanBeDead

I was just making the point that the fact that there is death, war and destruction does not mean there is no god. It’s possible that if god or gods exist then they might actively be overseeing things like death, war and destruction. Humans have lots of ideas. And for some people it is, like you said, just “bull”.

JustAnotherPoster00 · 07/12/2020 02:45

Ares was the Greek God of war, Athena was the God of combat amongst other things

I see the God of the gaps is being wheeled out by some pp's on here, science doesn't know so must be God, the gap is getting smaller and smaller

To those of you who still have your faith, I woke up at 15, would you be happy with a Dr treating you or your child out of a bronze age medical book? If not then why are you willing to base some of your choices in life on a bronze age collection of 'scripture' from a middle eastern religious cult?

'But can you see how that doesn't stand up when people don't believe in 'him'? If I don't believe someone exists, I can't ask 'them' if they do...'

It feels a bit like this:

  1. I have just had a fabulous piece of cake, tasty AND nutritious
  2. Thats nice but how can I believe that claim?
  3. Why not try for yourself, shall I share with you the recipe?
  4. No because I don't do recipes, its a policy which has served me really well so far and I prefer my way of cooking.
  5. If you want to try this cake, you'll need the recipe
  6. But I just told you I don't do them...

If you don't want to even try the cake, thats fine, there are other things to eat which may satisfy you.
If you do want to taste and see, but refuse to even ask for the recipe, you've put yourself in an impossible situation.
If you want to try it but then discover the cake recipe originally came from someone who you've heard makes horrid cakes... then you may have to overcome those preconceptions or you'll never even get started...

For me, I heard about the cake, asked for the recipe and I've been feasting on this delicious, nutritional cake for a while and I'd love to give you a piece so you can share it with me. But I can't. I can tell you where I got the recipe from though... its up to you what you do with it.

I think it says a lot about me that I've made this all about cake Grin, I'm going to have to make one now.... hmmm, chocolate or lemon drizzle?

It’s more like I just Had a delicious piece of cake but I couldn’t see or smell or taste or feel it

@ruby4ever

Of course there's a god. There has to be. Bollocks that the universe came about from Big Bang and humans from evolution. What a load of crap. So why haven't we humans evolved any further??? There has to be a creator to the creation. Do you think humans just come out with amazing interventions, god gives them the knowledge. Everything happens for a reason. Why is there poor people? If there wasn't how would we learn to be good in giving charity, to be grateful. How does our good deeds increase? Life is a test. I believe all those poor people, innocent people being killed, etc they aren't suffering for nothing, they will get paradise of eternal bliss. Those of us in better positions are given the choice of doing good for others, for ourselves.
Human beings are always evolving, to say we haven't evolved is nonsense. Can you not see how despicable a being who would make you have a lifetime of suffering so you get to have eternal bliss is? Doesn't that sound sick to you?

No, I don't believe in god.

ArthursRoundTable · 07/12/2020 09:14

@JustAnotherPoster00 “Ares was the Greek God of war, Athena was the God of combat amongst other things”

I thought the Roman God of War, Mars, was the Greek equivalent of Ares? In other words, same difference since the the Romans took the Greek gods and just changed their names pretty much.
Athena is also a God(des) of War, amongst other titles (Wisdom being an important one) but she’s more concerned with the Strategic side of war.

“As the god of war and violence, Ares was the personification of the bloodlust and cruelty that took place during battles. His sister, Athena was the goddess of war, but she represented the intelligence and strategy that was used to win wars.”

ErrolTheDragon · 07/12/2020 09:19

I've tried the cake, but then I started to look into its ingredients found it was devoid of any nutritional content and unwholesome. And then I found the recipe didn't work any more for me.

JustAnotherPoster00 · 07/12/2020 10:00

The Cake is a lie

TheSandman · 07/12/2020 10:25

I had a nice dream about a cake once. I was still hungry in the morning. Imaginary food is not very sustaining.

MariaAngustias · 07/12/2020 10:30

I am not sure, weirdly when I read about physics it brings me closer to believing in 'something'. I had a bit of a semi-religious experience once when I first used a slit lamp (the thing they use in the optician for examining eyes, like a microscope). I was learning how to use it and when I saw how the individual muscles of the iris worked and all the many colours of the iris I had a sudden very strong conviction that there must be a creator. I wish I could have a faith but I remain on the fence!

But recipes aren't an unknown, invisible concept. I would know the recipe was real, so I could look at it and then decide if I wanted to use it.

I don't believe in god. Someone telling me to ask god if he is real therefore doesn't make sense - that was my point.

Nonamesavail · 07/12/2020 11:23

Male creator. No. I would also hate to be wrong because I really don't like the sound of this narcissistic creator.

Theyouttheresayin · 07/12/2020 11:30

I did as a child, but not now. It just doesn't make sense to me.

Also, as a gay woman, I've had to put up with a lot of sh&t from 'believers' and church doctrine and I certainly don't believe in a god or a church that thinks gay people or 'sinners' or 'wrong'.

I was taught stuff as a child that I 100 percent believed in, only to have the church change its' mind when it suited.

We also had a paedophile priest as our school priest, and when that came to light ( we didn't know at the time but he got caught) the church suddenly moved him from our school to another school a few hundred miles away. And then another. And another. He abused children for almost 40 years protected by one bishop after another before finally being prosecuted.

ArthursRoundTable · 07/12/2020 11:51

What if God exists but does not actually want humans to get too close?

That's the impression I get from the Tower of Babel. "God caused the people to suddenly speak different languages so they could not communicate and work together to build the tower." The tower was supposed to get close to god.

It's almost like God saying "leave me alone!".

BLToutanowhere · 07/12/2020 12:03

In an infinite universe, the odds are there is something out there far more advanced than us. I really hope we aren't the pinnacle of evolution as we are a bloody horrible species.

I don't believe in god for rational reasons, but this kind of thing is why I'm glad I don't.

It justifies and presents all suffering no matter how vile to be a good thing. If god arranges for a child to die horribly that is so that it gives the family a reason to bond together in their suffering and appreciate god's love.

It would take a pretty awful person you'd think to agree with that, but a lot of Christians will come out with it. People whom you'd otherwise would think fairly normal. It's what the indoctrination does to the mind and morals of the victims.

Meowchickameowmeow · 07/12/2020 12:52

@80sForever

Just to add further the coronavirus began because a certain group of people disobeyed those said spiritual laws and now we are all suffering
Fuck the fuck off with that crap.
TellitToTheStars · 07/12/2020 12:52

@LastTrainEast Victims? To be fair the only victims are those who live without hope once this life ends. How sad it is that you think there is nothing left once you die

Yes I believe in God's both male and female! Its comforting to me, but understand if others don't. There are debates that God(s) are extraterrestrial, but that's another debate!
fatkitchen · 07/12/2020 13:20

I was brought up to believe in God. I don't think I do though. I don't believe in a heaven.
I have a ds who has strong beliefs in god though and has actually asked to be baptised, I'm not sure he really understands baptism though.

I am glad he has never met the religion obsessed Mormon side of the family though.

The whole Jesus son of god thing?? I'm not sure I believe in that. Maybe he was just a charming attention seeker and the vulnerable fell for it.

@Meowchickameowmeow I don’t think @80sForever is alone in the thinking and belief that there’s something more going on with coronavirus. I even know of hardcore atheists who have asked the question ‘is coronavirus an act of god?’ and that’s quite telling. There are of course real life implications with insurance with ‘acts of gods’ as it means there’s no cover.

If any laws have been broken for coronavirus to happen I suspect it’s more grounded in the laws of nature being broken. Apparently the virus started in a wild life market in Wuhan. Something to do with humans eating bats?

Animal source of the coronavirus continues to elude scientists “Computational models, cell studies and animal experiments are being used to pinpoint the viral host that kicked off the pandemic.”
