Believe by all means if it helps, makes you feel better, whatever.

Personally no.

SendMeAnAngel · 04/12/2020 21:50

Why are you asking OP? Why the sudden interest in if there is a God? If you don't believe why not just drop it rather than make a thread about it?

Snog · 04/12/2020 21:50

Stephen Fry has it

MayYouLiveInInterestingTimes · 04/12/2020 21:51

Why would it have to be someone starting things off? I’m interested in how ideas spread, are adopted by and change in different cultures. It’s interesting how you end up with a monotheistic sentient being in the middle/ Near East spreading West, but in the far east you end up with a single concept of energy binding the universe, a ‘non-sentient’ universal non-being kind of affair. It might be tied to the development of specialised economies and hierarchies, now I come to think of it. I prefer the eastern thinking myself - insofar as I understand it! It rings close to the western scientific ideas.

stayathomer · 04/12/2020 21:51

I believe in god. My beliefs are probably very immature, I believe in an overseer that doesn't have much power ie the world happened and science and nature and god all came together but life goes on and the bad things that happen happen either by people or nature. I believe there's some magic there, that miracles can happen and there's an afterlife. My dad was very holy and found some comfort in the belief of seeing his family afterwards and I will too. My in laws are incredulous at my beliefs, they are strict atheists and very intelligent and well read and have basically told me I must know that's crazy but I dont care really. My kids believe but I have told them about other beliefs and that they might decide they dont believe what I do and that's fine but they can never ever tell someone that their beliefs are wrong because nobody knows

Macncheeseballs · 04/12/2020 21:51

Yep She's great!

Madhairday · 04/12/2020 21:51

I believe in God and I do not see a conflict between God and science. It doesn't mean that I don't see any of the issues - suffering, evil, general rubbishness - but my experience is that God is in it with us and, as a Christian, my belief is based on something that happened in history rather than a vague needing to believe in something mystical and out there. My faith brings me much joy and peace like nothing I can describe.

SchrodingersImmigrant · 04/12/2020 21:51

But what’s the point in believing in gods that don’t do anything?

I guess comfort, because with God come other aspects such as heaven and angels and peace after death which many people finfld comforting when they are facing a loss.

nancybotwinbloom · 04/12/2020 21:52

I believe in god. I'm a Protestant as
That's how I was brought up but I think I prob relate to Buddhism more than any other religion.

I've found comfort in church before and in spiritual churches when I have needed it.

I don't define it except I think there is a place for a soul to go based on your life and how you are in your life. A lot of what I think contradicts different beliefs of different religions.

I believe in reincarnation. I just try to be considerate of others and be a good person.

If there is a god then I don't believe they would be bothered what religion you called yourself.

Not sure what I am lol. But I know I believe in god or similar and an afterlife.

@WotWouldCJDo

I agree with your DH. God exists alongside modern science. I don't know the hows, whys and wherefores, but I do believe there is a God

But what’s the point in believing in gods that don’t do anything?

I didn't say he doesn't do anything Confused
paddyclampitt · 04/12/2020 21:52

I think people are entitled to their own opinion. If people don't believe, that's up to them but nobody can say for certain that it is or isn't true.

AuntyPonsonby · 04/12/2020 21:53

I'm as atheist as they come, but I don't see anything inconsistent in believing in a god and accepting modern science.
Alann01 · 04/12/2020 21:53

God is just Santa for adults

SilverOtter · 04/12/2020 21:55

I don't think YABU. There is no reason why God and science should be mutually exclusive. If you are interested and contemplating the existence of God, it's definitely a question you should explore further OP.

Crankley · 04/12/2020 21:55

There is no god. Religion was invented to control the population of the time. The opiate of the masses. How it has lasted until the 21st century is beyond my comprehension.

LynetteScavo · 04/12/2020 21:57

I can feel God, which is how I know God exists. No one else can feel what I personally experience, so I can't prove it to anyone else. But I guess if you understand the concept of God and can't feel it, God doesn't exist for you.

Twiggywinkle13 · 04/12/2020 21:57

Yes. I absolutely believe it.

It doesn’t mean I don’t believe in science and evolution.

WotWouldCJDo · 04/12/2020 21:57

The Flying Spaghetti Monster defence?

Nottherealslimshady · 04/12/2020 21:58

Don't know if god exists. But I dont agree with religion, either it's a way to control the masses and has no real knowledge of god. Or religion is correct, in which case, I've no interest in a god that is homophobic, believes men can rape women but women get beaten to death for having sex with someone she's not married to, and let's you go to heaven no matter what you've done if you worship him and ask forgiveness from him.

So I'll try to be a good person irrespective of god, if god doesn't exist and I die and everything goes black, all good. If god sends you to heaven or hell based on how much you hurt people then fine. But if god wants to send me to hell for not worshipping him, well then he can fuck himself the narcissistic twat.

missyB1 · 04/12/2020 21:58

I believe in God as the creator. In my opinion he/she doesn’t control the world, we are here to make the best of it - unfortunately we often fuck it up.
I don’t feel the need to prove anything to anyone, I have faith and it’s irrelevant to me if anyone else does or doesn’t. I find it weird and extremely rude when people demand evidence or proof- like I care whether they believe or not!

Stellaris22 · 04/12/2020 21:59

Don't believe in God and I was raised Catholic and went to a Catholic school.

I still remember when I questioned it for the first time. I was in sixth form (first educational establishment since that school) and when I said I believed in God, they said: why?

It was the first time anyone had asked me that and I was shocked that i had never questioned it before.

I suddenly realised that actually, I didn't believe, I had just been raised to never question it.

It's why I am hugely against forcing religion on children, they are raised (like I was) to accept something and never challenge it.

Of course if you decide later in life that you do believe then that's fine, it's your choice as an adult. But forcing religion on children and others just seems immoral.

Iwonder777 · 04/12/2020 22:00

No you're not

He's the reason I keep going

I'm a Christian

Dramatically saved when younger

Not a church goer but a believer in Jesus

MeringueCloud · 04/12/2020 22:01

Yes I do believe in God.

speakout · 04/12/2020 22:02

No evidence to suggest he exists.

I hope he doesn't- he sounds an evil disgusting individual.
