to think that camouflage clothing on children is in poor taste?

Am I just old and grumpy or is it reasonable to believe that young children should NOT be wearing camouflage clothing?! I can't stand the stuff but my DS's (4 and 2) have just been given rather a lot of it as gifts! What do you think?

how about under 5's with pierced ears.. now that is really offensive

.. this is tantamount to child abuse IMHO

As for camo.. fashion is a fickle thing.. I don't mind what kids wear providing they look presentable..

stoppinattwo · 20/10/2007 21:23

YAY nemo......................someone who talks sense

themoon66 · 20/10/2007 21:24

I got a lovely military style coat in Next.... is that poor taste do you think? [worried]

magnolia74 · 20/10/2007 21:28

What about adults in camo?? I have 3 pairs of camo trosuers , ds1 has a lovely pair as does dd3.
What a bizzare thing to get all wound up over

bozza · 20/10/2007 21:31

I'm not wound up, I just have an opinion, and not necessarily a consistent opinion at that. I definitely like my Russian officer style military coat - apart from the fact that the heavy buttons are forever coming off and having to be sewn back on.

corblimeycharlie · 20/10/2007 21:32

Camouflage isn't only used by the services - lovely peace loving bird watcher like Bill Oddie have been known to wear camouflage you know.

MadamePlatypus · 20/10/2007 21:32

DS has camouflage shorts. He will be a wildlife photographer when he grows up.

corblimeycharlie · 20/10/2007 21:35

Not to infer that soldiers are not peace loving you understand. Taking the last 5 years into account I would imagine they, more than anyone would wish for peace.

corblimeycharlie · 20/10/2007 21:36

Great minds MadamePlatypus

Hey, it's official! I'm old and grumpy. Then again, probably didn't need to start this thread to figure that one out for myself.

special thanks to Geordiemacmummy whose reply made me really laugh!

I think YABU to think it is not ok for young children to wear camouflage clothing. DS wears it and it looks lovely. He wants to wokr with wildlife (or be a rock star). I find it far more worrying when children are dressed like 'mini' adults, esp girls who's clothing is sexualised.

I am probaby totally unreasonable but I find the baseball cap (chav style) much more eww on boys than sa little bit of camouflage clothing. But I knwo i am unreasonable and judgemental there

Sorry, haven't read whole thread, but in case OP is interested, there is an independent school near me, no uniform, kids wear what they like, EXCEPT not camouflage/combat-style clothing.

FrankAwenstein · 20/10/2007 21:54

If camo is chavvy then click on my profiel for pic of my gorgeaus ds (clearly not chavvy) in his blue camouflage t-shirt.

notnowbernard · 20/10/2007 21:54

It feels a bit odd to be labelling kids as 'chav' (for wearing a baseball cap!)

To feel that pierced ears are 'offensive' (bit strong, no?)

Agree people seem to be getting their knickers in a twist about it!

sparklygothkat · 20/10/2007 21:54

My DS who is nearly 10, love camoflague jeans and also likes skulls... he choses his clothes when I take him clothes shopping.. and I agree with frank, that a baseball cap (chav style) is much more ewww too.

FrankAwenstein · 20/10/2007 21:54

o and no shaved head quite the opposite!

FrankAwenstein · 20/10/2007 21:56

but notnowbernard.. i know i am being unreasonable unfortunately area i am living in isnt too great and been lots of trouble from stereotypical youths who younger sibling mimic them, including the cap thing. Thankfully i am moving..

fizzbuzz · 20/10/2007 21:57

Chavy? I bought ds some blue amoflauge trousres from Boden a couple of years ago.

Somehow, Boden and chavy don't go together...I believe the word is oxymoron...

notnowbernard · 20/10/2007 21:58

I'll let you off then

pennlope1 · 20/10/2007 21:58

My five year old dd1 couldn't wait to get a pair of camouflage trousers !!! Both my boys hate them but have to say dd1 looks cute in them especially with her bright red top !!!! She has style

Quadrophenia · 20/10/2007 21:58

its really vile to call any child chavvy.

On one hand with my 'western-fashiony- head-on' I think it's a pretty fabric

The moment I step back from that and think about child soldiers in Africa I get very uncomfortable - it's sooo not about seeing kids playing with popguns or anything for me - what it's about is me remembering the film Blood Diamond and almost bursting a blood vessel with crying over it.

Children in camouflage clothes makes me uncomfortable when I think about it - when i don't think about it I just think it hides the dirt.

pennlope1 · 20/10/2007 22:04
