to think that camouflage clothing on children is in poor taste?

Am I just old and grumpy or is it reasonable to believe that young children should NOT be wearing camouflage clothing?! I can't stand the stuff but my DS's (4 and 2) have just been given rather a lot of it as gifts! What do you think?

agree with that.

rather small kids in camouflage clothing than football kits.

Saturn74 · 21/10/2007 10:32

DS2 has indestructible camouflage combat trousers from Boden.

He thinks he looks like Ray Mears.

We didn't purchase the night-vision goggles and weaponry, as you know what Boden's stock levels are like, so I think any military reference is lost on him.

Not read whole thread ... but here's my thoughts (just in case anyone cares )

Not keen on camouflage on very young children. Not for any particular reason I suppose, other than I feel it's a bit "old" for them. Dd1 is very keen on the army and would like to join when she is old enough (she is desperate to join army cadets but is still too young atm). (It's not the gun/shooting thing that appeals, but more the discipline/structure/intelligence side of it). She has camouflage waterproofs, hat and fleece, and generally wears khaki trousers and 8-hole docs (she would get on well with Ormirian's dd!) - that's just her style! Dh was in the army so there is a bit of background there.

I agree with other posters though who say that it's not something I get that het up about. For dd it's just a way of expressing her interests and I respect that, though I would probably not have chosen to buy them for her otherwise.

Rather see children in camouflage clothes then some of the little girls I see walking about looking like hookers with middrifts on show, short skirts and high boots.

DS has a pair of gap combat browmn print trousers. I hate them. They were a gift which dp liked and I didn't. Unfortunately Dp's tidy nature meant he put them away before I got round to doing anything with them and therefore ripped the labels off. It just seemed too much hassle to go and explain this to the shop. He only wears them when DP gets him dressed though!! They'll be too small for him soon .

3andnogore · 21/10/2007 12:39

hm...but "squaddie" clothes, are generally clothes with a certain print, hookerclothes really do send a disturbing message...however...to me the Kids camou stuff really truely does NOT resemble squaddie clothing anyway....

chisigirl · 21/10/2007 13:42

The shirt that DS1 was given to go with his camouflage trousers is a khaki colour with little pictures of F16 fighter jets, military helicopters and skulls & crossbones on it! aggggggggh.

As we don't have girls, I don't have to worry about off-the-shoulder tops and high-heeled shoes for the under-3 set.

LOL at camo print being same as sexualising little girls early!

nappyaddict · 21/10/2007 16:26

don't really like camo trousers or tshirts but for some reason i don't mind it on shorts

if you want tasteless look at this

PeachyFleshCrawlingWithBugs · 21/10/2007 16:28

we dont do guns but ds1 chose a camou coat last year, he was paying so he ahs it. It'll now be apssed right on down. Its duck down and fabulous on cold Welsh mornings.

PeachyFleshCrawlingWithBugs · 21/10/2007 16:33

(much prefer army imagery to irate stuff btw- soldiers and warfare can achieve positive result, whereas school pirate day pissed me off as pirates are damnedly evil!)

OrmIrian · 21/10/2007 16:43

Good point peachy. Pirates were generally pox-ridden, ammoral, greedy, violent thugs. But no-one seems to object to little boys running around with plastic cutlasses and eye-patches Mine included I admit but I don't tend to take a particularly moral stand on any of this. It's just image. What they say and think is much more important and potentially harmful.

PeachyFleshCrawlingWithBugs · 21/10/2007 16:45

[embarassinga dmission] when they ahd pirates day at Nursery i sent ds3 in wearing a ripped shirt and pirates costume, but with 'pacifist pirates against the plank' written all over it and a CND necklace!!

Poor poor kid. (he didnt understand, btw)

TwoToTango · 21/10/2007 17:11

I'd never given any thought to DS wearing camouflage trousers/shorts. To be honest they are usually hard wearing, don't show the dirt and have a lot of deep pockets - all of which are major pluses when you have an active 7yo

Donk · 21/10/2007 20:35

3andnomore - it works by breaking up their outline - this works in more environments than you'd think. Anywhere outside on a country walk for instance......

Mamamoor · 21/10/2007 20:50

Coming from a military family (dad, uncle, gdad etc) I guess I've been brought up with camo clothing as soldiers' workwear and inappropriate on anyone else (except perhaps wildlife camermen or bodyguards!) Have never even considered it as a fashion statement. Think it looks daft on men/women who are not soldiers - trying to be something they most definitely are not! Sorry fashionistas - shoot me now!
