Do you think it's going to be manic

OP posts:

We're currently in tier 3 and my local Tesco was heaving yesterday. Combination of it being pay day and no other shops being open I think. They'll be absolutely heaving tomorrow I reckon.

papaelf · 01/12/2020 17:16

@Gwenhwyfar

"Why on earth would you?"

Because she wants to and she's allowed to.

I wasn't saying otherwise. I was saying 'why on earth would you' be sure the shops will be manic and OP doesn't need anything.

Parker231 · 01/12/2020 17:20

I’m sticking to online shopping. Nothing to do with Covid or lockdown but I prefer online.

kungfupannda · 01/12/2020 17:25

I actually need to go to Ikea at some point in the next few days.

Just kill me now.

kungfupannda · 01/12/2020 17:27

That wasn't a 'so kill me', by the way - it was a 'kill me and get it over with as I'm not sure Ikea will be survivable after being closed for a month.'

kungfupannda · 01/12/2020 17:27

Actually, I don't think I can. It's in tier 3 and we're in tier 2.

Lweji · 01/12/2020 17:28

I would go, if you feel like it. As early as possible and would only enter the emptiest shops if only browsing.

But I suspect the day after will be better.

MrsLeclerc · 01/12/2020 17:28

Speaking as someone from Wales who witnessed the post lockdown Christmas shopping a few weeks ago...I wouldn’t if you don’t absolutely have to.

The second weekend after re-opening we attempted a trip to an out of town shopping district (The Range, B&M and a TK Maxx etc). We had to turn around and come home as we couldn’t get into the car park. There was a queue of people around the side of the huge Smyths Toys building.

On the way home we thought we’d try to pop in to the local independent garden centre. Pulled into the car park and people were queuing outside as it was one in one out.

This was in mid November so I dread to think what it’d be like if it happened now.

I hate busy shops at the best of times so I couldn’t face queuing in the current circumstances.

megletthesecond · 01/12/2020 17:28

No way.
I'm going in now to finish stocking bits and stock up on food for a few days. Then I'll keep my head down for a bit.

herecomesthsun · 01/12/2020 17:33

I don't think I have anything left to buy. (normally buy a lot online and have been shielding so hey, just went with it(

Legoandloldolls · 01/12/2020 17:34

I dont think it will be crazy busy. I went to primark the day they opened after the first wave and there was no queue and not as busy as a Saturday.

I personally cant do the whole queuing thing ( just not enough patience or will power) so I will happily queue for one shop but then I'm done with that and dont want to queue up again.

Go out with no expectations and if its manic go back home? That's what I would do. If needed to buy stuff

RoSEbuds6 · 01/12/2020 17:34

I agree with you hoviscats

After the news about Debenhams today, I'm going into John Lewis and will do my xmas shopping in person. I'm also going to go to some independent bookshops to buy a few books, wrapping paper etc.

Changethetoner · 01/12/2020 17:38

NO. browsing in a pandemic is not a good idea. If you NEED something then yes, go and purchase it locally, but not just taking up space in a queue or shop for browsing only.

Therealjudgejudy · 01/12/2020 17:38

I'm in Ireland and our 6 week lock down ended today.

I did most of my Christmas shopping online but went into town at 9am this morning for my last 2 presents. Was pleasantly surprised...I even went into Penney's/Primark. I was number 4 in the que outside and managed to pick up some nice bits for myself.

Had a costa hot chocolate and was home by 11am Smile

SoupDragon · 01/12/2020 17:38

It wasn't approaching Christmas then though. I think that will make a difference.

tillyandmilly · 01/12/2020 17:42

Fairliz - yep I am going to look for prezzies in the charity shops been made redundant so funds are limited!

Muchtoomuchtodo · 01/12/2020 17:43

Even if the English lockdown is over, we all still need to limit the number of contacts that we have with other people as much as possible.

Some shopping is essential but browsing seems like an absurd idea at the moment.

I went into Cardiff last Monday. While it wasn’t particularly busy, the amount of standing in queues made everything hard work and not enjoyable.

Muchtoomuchtodo · 01/12/2020 17:47

@RedToothBrush I used click and collect at Cardiff IKEA last week which was really efficient. Don’t give up hope of getting your shelves!

And given that Wales now has new restrictions starting Friday, just weeks after relaxing them, due to increasing cases it would be crazy to add to the crush and raise figure just for a browse!

How fecking miserable life is becoming

This

PinkSubscriber · 01/12/2020 17:59

Yes I’ll be going on Thursday.

It would be really helpful if those of you going tomorrow could come back to let us know how busy it was. I’m wondering whether to take the car or get dropped off.

DagenhamRoundhouse · 01/12/2020 18:00

M&S on the retail park was packed out with pensioners today! All getting their food shopping done before mayhem tomorrow, I can only think. Me and DH included!

Tenyearsgone · 01/12/2020 18:02

I will go and browse the shops. Because I've had a bloody miserable year and I want to go Christmas shopping.

RedToothBrush · 01/12/2020 18:04

Yeah and it costs a small fortune to do click and collect. I will wait until i hear that ikea has calmed down.

IceCreamAndCandyfloss · 01/12/2020 18:04

No, plan to finish all the shopping online.

It’s not worth the risk when I can have it all delivered next day plus save on petrol/parking.
