Carrie Bradshaw - A CF, right?

Nikhedonia · 29/11/2020 20:09

She's a pretty self-obsessed shit friend, but a CF too, right?

I rewatched an episode the other day where she needed to buy her apartment and she expected Charlotte to sell her engagement ring to fund the purchase Shock

I reckon if SATC were real, Miranda or Charlotte would be on MN gushing about their best friend being incredible and everyone would be calling Carrie a CF and advising them to go NC.

I hated that show. I was a young single professional woman living in NY at the time and I was horrified that people would think women like me were like those girls - shallow, narcissistic, selfish, entitled, regressive bitches. I would watch it on planes thinking maybe I should give it another go because it's a big deal and then end up angry all over again.

NerosFiddle · 01/12/2020 00:42

I feel like I'm making up a scene where Carrie goes to one of Natasha's event, so is sent a thank you card. Natasha spells their instead of there (or something like that) and Carrie calls her an idiot.

GlummyMcGlummerson · 01/12/2020 00:45

@NerosFiddle yep she did. And laughs like it actually matters. I remember thinking "yeah but she has Big".

The group also refer to Natasha as "the stick insect with no soul" after hearing Big is engaged to her - without one of them ever having met Natasha!

Suzi888 · 01/12/2020 00:49

Never watched it, but what’s a CF?Confused

CatAndHisKit · 01/12/2020 00:50

It's my lovely warm comfort blanket

me too - one of my long-standing favourites. Just watched the clip someone's posted here and thought ooh it was too long since I actually watched, instantly made me smile.

@CherryCherries I never liked Miranda at first but she grew on me over time and I think she had the best character development out of them all! When I watch Sex and the City back now as an adult I can really relate to Miranda and why she was so tough and hard faced. She was a woman in what was a man's world then building a career as a corporate lawyer I get why she was so tough she had to work twice as hard and showing emotion would have made her look weak. She was the most loyal of the friends, even though she could be judgemental at times she always gave great advice to her friends, was always honest with them about their behaviour and stayed loyal to them despite their flaws and considering she had this high flying career she wasn't a snob or a gold digger like Charlotte was. Charlotte only went with guys who had careers that earned plenty of money and came from wealthy society families with whereas Miranda didn't.

My favourite moment for Miranda was when her and Steve went to his mother's place after she'd had a stroke and saw just what a bad state was she living in and Steve was so angry and upset that he hadn't realised and she comforted him and told him his mother could live with them as they have a their big house in Brooklyn and a spare room for her and then later on Miranda gave her bath and Magda said to her "you love" that was such a sweet moment and really showed that Miranda wasn't a hard faced bitch she just didn't show her feelings to anyone unless she trusted them.

kwiksavenofrillsusername · 01/12/2020 02:10

@EmeraldShamrock

I would do emotionally and practically do anything for my friends but my generosity doesn't extend to financial support Mine would. If I could afford to lend a good friend who was at risk of becoming homeless and unable to find a rental for their budget I'd definitely lend them the money.
I seem to remember Carrie looking around apartments and whinging that there wasn't enough room for her shoes. So I don't think she would have ended up homeless, she just would have had to live somewhere tiny and not to her standards.
Gremlinsateit · 01/12/2020 02:15

I read recently, maybe on here, that Trey is a nickname meaning the third so his name is really eg John MacDougal III which would be a class marker and also fit with Bunny as the mother’s name.

I liked the early episodes better where it was more of a vox pop style about relationships in NY, instead of the later plot- and romance- driven seasons.

Aiden looks worse and worse every time, I think. So controlling and insistent that his (equally trivial) preferences are so much more important than hers.

wellhelloyou · 01/12/2020 02:24

I don't live in the UK (but follow UK new etc) and for quite a few posts I thought you were taking about Carrie Symonds Confused Grin

I wondered how all of you knew so much about her personal life!

groovergirl · 01/12/2020 04:36

Late to this, but hell, this discussion is well overdue. Does anyone else think SATC is the Jane Eyre story? Girl from who knows where, living on her wits, meets Mr Rochester?

I'm SJP's age (b. 1965) and if I could I would massively rewrite the SATC final episodes to reflect how we women IRL think and act. Surprised that SJP didn't do this at the time, but I guess she had her salary to preserve.

Paris? Ditch all the designer shit in a consignment store. Ditch the two silly guys. Call Miranda and say "Bloody hell, I'm in Paris!!! Finally out of the parochial NY headspace and off to have some amazing experiences!" Then buy some good walking shoes (Campers, if one must be stylish) and hit the streets. Paris is so wonderful for walking and enjoying all the cultural and culinary delights. From Paris, get on the Camino de Santiago and keep walking to Spain and Portugal, meeting many interesting people on the way. Let Big and the artist pursue, if so ardent.

I do think SATC presents a poor view of '60s-born women. Please, young ones, don't think we are all like this. Most of us are NOT LIKE THIS. We just watch the show for the fashion, and for the fantasy of friendship that persists despite long work hours and whiny partners.

stampsurprise · 01/12/2020 06:36

. I said in a previous post that I see my own and my friends in our twenties in her and I really do.

Except the SATC characters were mid-30s and it often seemed odd to me how childish they acted.

Nancydowns · 01/12/2020 06:37

Someone wrote a booked called we should all be like Miranda

stampsurprise · 01/12/2020 06:40

Then after those god awful films I didn't watch the series again until about 6 months ago (aged 39).

The funny thing is the characters were well into their 30s too Grin it's not like they were really young. They just didn't mature - especially Carrie.

Can't believe nobody has mentioned Anthony though.

Loved Anthony!

"I had a bride from New Jersey who had a stroke...pulled it together for the big day though"

And

"I'll give you $100 dollars if you say something bitchy about someone we know"

Grin

Wasn't it the idiot stick figure with no soul?

Poor Natasha.

@Nikhedonia

Can't believe nobody has mentioned Anthony though. One of my favourite scenes is where Stanford asks him if he is Italian and Anthony says "no Scillian " and Stanford says " oh - is that different?"

I love it when Anthony and Charlotte dance about together (is she in her wedding dress?)

Bitchy Anthony is the best character. He needed a spin off.

Marrying Stanford was ludicrous.

Lucifer do you think you could consider banning the phrase ‘hard faced bitch’ from your vocabulary?

It’s one of the most misogynistic phrases to exist. Truly disgusting.

I loved the SATC series at the time - the films were a woeful travesty. One of my favourite episodes is when Charlotte takes Elizabeth Taylor to a dog show and she comes into season. Carrie says something like 'I thought she looked a bit bloated' and Stanford adds 'and she was so bitchy to me backstage'. It was the wee exchanges like this that were so much more fun than Carrie's painful pursuit of Big.

I used to feel the same about Miranda. Wasn’t overly keen on her.

However as I’ve got older and am now into my 40’s, when I watch it now I can appreciate her character more.

There’s a bit in the first film, where after a fight with Steve, Miranda tells Big at the rehearsal dinner that “you two are crazy to get married”, then later when she tells Carrie what she said to Big, Carrie has a go at her and accuses her of ruining her marriage.

When I watched that the first time I was like “Miranda, fancy saying that to Big knowing what he’s like?”

Now when I watch it I’m like “Fuck off Carrie. Why are you marrying such a flaky bloke who scares so easily? What you have is a DH problem, not a BF problem!” GrinGrin

Oh and yeah the bit where she bathes Steve’s Mom and Magda says “What you did, that is love. You love” and kisses her on the head. Still makes me emotional and have a tear in my eye.

Nikhedonia · 01/12/2020 09:21

Magda is a bit of a scene stealer, I love her. When Miranda quits her job and there's a suggestion of Miranda staying at home with Brady, the face Magda pulls is brilliant

Charlotte was always my favourite but on the rewatch being much older I preferred Samantha, she was so funny.

I’ve always liked Samantha. Mainly because she was funny, but also because I loved the way she challenged the idea of women being looked down upon, for having sex the way they want, with who they want.

I think my favourite Samantha line is from the first film. Her and Smith have just finished having sex and Smith says, “you seem distant” and Samantha goes “Distant? You’re still in me?” Grin my friend and I both howled at that line when we watched it at the cinema Grin
