Carrie Bradshaw - A CF, right?

Nikhedonia · 29/11/2020 20:09

She's a pretty self-obsessed shit friend, but a CF too, right?

I rewatched an episode the other day where she needed to buy her apartment and she expected Charlotte to sell her engagement ring to fund the purchase Shock

I reckon if SATC were real, Miranda or Charlotte would be on MN gushing about their best friend being incredible and everyone would be calling Carrie a CF and advising them to go NC.

@Nikhedonia I’d forgotten that happened. She still should have left when he buggered off and left her on her own Grin

Charlottejbt · 30/11/2020 19:36

Yes! When she was talking to some guy (a photographer?) about how much she loved models and she said "when I first moved to New York I sometimes had to chose between food and Vogue. I bought Vogue; I just felt like it fed me more." Please fuck off you pretentious twat, nobody would do that; you need food to live.

I did that sometimes when I was a student! I'm also a fake intellectual with no TV (obviously had one when BFing 20 years ago or I couldn't have watched SATC). I'd feel a tad hypocritical piling on to CB because I've basically done every silly thing she's done, or at least the less glamorous equivalent of it. I do agree with the MN consensus though.

She absolutely should have!

Have you screamed at a squirrel, too? Sad

Carrie’s hysterical screaming at the squirrel reminds me of the now classic MN thread about the woman screaming at the Sistine chapel Grin

HmmSureJan · 30/11/2020 19:42

@CatAndHisKit

No, I love CB - or rather Sarah J-P in that role.

Yes, she's neurotic and a bit scatterbrain, and not always a perfect friend but they haven't dumped her as a friend so obvs the girls thought the good outweighs the bad. She did have a lot of patience and advice available for the girls.
She's witty and stylish (and then some) and loveable imo.

I don't dislike her either. She's flawed as we all are and I am reading loads on this thread moaning about her and certain things she did yet when you actually watch the episode she just wasn't that bad or there was a background to the situation that made her behaviour more understandable or forgivable eg getting drunk at Vogue because her article was criticised, yes with the predatory male editor who kept serving her drinks to get her drunk and then later dropped his trousers unexpectedly and tried to get it on with her 🤷🏼‍♀️ . I said in a previous post that I see my own and my friends in our twenties in her and I really do. But on MN everyone is perfect and would never do a self absorbed or thoughtless thing or be unattractively needy or desperate except they would and probs have but would never admit it on here Wink
BalthazarImpresario · 30/11/2020 19:46

They made way to big a deal about Carrie dating a bisexual man, kinda offensive. Shouldn’t have been more than not for me, bye. But it was drawn out discussions etc.

I only really liked Miranda’s story
I liked the first film, ina sick way she got what she deserved at that wedding.

ERFGLA · 30/11/2020 20:05

Ha haaa remember when there was no way you wanted to be The Miranda and then you realise that she’s the best f*cking one? LOL
Yes , Carrie is a dick - that’s never been a secret - the girls DO tell her off constantly and they do pull her up frequently on her bad behaviour
I also enjoyed how she wasn’t SUPPOSED to be perfect: so rare for a female lead! Remember the one where she’s obsessed with figuring out what’s “wrong” with the nice guy and it ends with her breaking in to his safety deposit box like a maniac? And she catches herself on? Brilliant.
As for her wedding , as sad as it was ( Charlottes NO face to Big?) it was entirely of her own selfish doing and she is able to see that towards the end of the film.
I feel sorry for the young woman of today with no ground breaking , female comedy drama about sex and fashion and have to settle for the APPALLING Emily on Paris rolls eyes
“ I’m drunk. I’m drunk at VOGUE” will always be one of my favourite lines of anything.

Atalune · 30/11/2020 20:08

I loved it then and I love it now.

Carrie is a brat but I loved her for it! And Harry was the best he was the template for what a good guy really is.

Nikhedonia · 30/11/2020 20:12

Ok, if I had to identify with Carrie it would 100% be in this scene.

This would do my fucking head in and I would definitely be saying "Shut up, SHUT UP, shut up!!!!!!" GrinGrinGrin

They did call her out on her whining/self obsession at times. Remember when they cut her off and sent her to therapy? Remember Miranda calling her out about sending Aiden to rescue her when she was on the bathroom floor naked as her back/neck hurt.. the "bullshit bagels!"

Carrie and Miranda also fell out whilst clothes shopping because Miranda called her out on what s mistake it was her getting back with Big.

HmmSureJan · 30/11/2020 20:28

Also when she went whining to Charlotte about not lending her the money, Charlotte gave her a stinging telling off for it and told her straight it wasn't her job to sort out Carrie's finances and quite right too but at the same time Carrie was partly right too, Charlotte was given her multi million $$$ apartment after, what one, was it even two years of knowing Trey and marriage to him? And was still totally locked into the marriage emotionally, still wearing her engagement ring etc. Carrie pulled her out of that and helped her move on. She was a brat in that instance alright but not irredeemably so. Charlotte ended up loaning her the money and Carrie paid her back.

Shewhomustbeobeyed1 · 30/11/2020 20:29

Carrie is a brat a needs a bloody good slapping

psychomath · 30/11/2020 20:40

@theelfisfurloughed

I always thought Big was more likely to end up with a Charlotte or Natasha type.

Remember the episode when Carrie finds out he goes to church with his mother, and sulks when he doesn't want to take her, which imo is perfectly understand as their 'relationship' is about 99% sex. And she goes anyway Shock

@theelfisfurloughed I think, if I remember right, it actually was supposed to end that way, with Big ending up married to someone more suitable and parting ways with Carrie for good. The writers knew that their relationship wasn't a good one, but the network wanted the show to have a conventional happy ending and overruled them. At the end of the original book they also split up, as he was based on one of Candace Bushnell's real life exes.
Nikhedonia · 30/11/2020 20:46

Oh that's interesting and makes sense. It didn't seem right that Carrie and Big ended up together.

Carrie played her character well. I could see both sides with the engagement ring storyline too Carrie was emotionally supportive to Charlotte more than any of the others throughout her quest for the perfect man, Trey's wee issue, her miscarriage, harry, her adoption.
It was a loan.

At this point Charlotte hadn't met Harry or had the miscarriage etc. I also don't think it ever matters how supportive friends are. I would do emotionally and practically do anything for my friends but my generosity doesn't extend to financial support.

Shit I didn't realise that friendship was transactional and being supportive to a friend meant they could demand money Confused

dayswithaY · 30/11/2020 21:33

I love Carrie. She's quirky and complicated and funny and clever. I actually think she's the most realistic character on the show. Samantha is just a caricature obviously written by a man, Miranda is a self important bore and Charlotte is just a wet blanket. Carrie is fun, creative, tough and never boring. I agree Big was the wrong man though, he brought out the worst in her. My favourite boyfriend for her was played by Justin Theroux, they were perfectly matched but he couldn't get it up so she dumped him.

Good thing no one claimed that then.
BadlyDrawnSimpsonsCharacter · 30/11/2020 21:48

I'm a massive, massive fan of SATC and always will be. But yes, Carrie can be a bit of a prick! In the film I thought I was terrible when Steve, who is ACTUALLY MARRIED to Miranda, shags someone else as she is too busy with their child and work to have as much sex. But no, Carrie makes sure the spotlight is on her, even though we ALL knew Big was going to let her down.

I just always found no matter how badly the other girls had it, Carrie always found a way to make it all about her.

Still love SATC despite this though Grin

Mine would. If I could afford to lend a good friend who was at risk of becoming homeless and unable to find a rental for their budget I'd definitely lend them the money.

Popcornismandatory · 30/11/2020 22:09

I love love LOVE SATC!
It's my lovely warm comfort blanket which I watch on a loop late at night after the H has gone to bed.
Can't believe nobody has mentioned Anthony though. One of my favourite scenes is where Stanford asks him if he is Italian and Anthony says "no Scillian " and Stanford says " oh - is that different?"

I love it when Anthony and Charlotte dance about together (is she in her wedding dress?)
