To not remember the last thing I bought in TopShop?

So, I know that I am not the key demographic anymore but I can’t remember the last time I bought anything in TOpshop.

But as a teenager a trip to the Oxford street topshop was nirvana and my mum would often buy stuff there as well.

So has topshop just lost its fashion way and competitive pricing irrespective of the pandemic or not?

Don’t think I’ve bought anything there since around 2001.

Berthatydfil · 28/11/2020 08:42

Top shops demographic now buy from bohoo etc.

IMNOTSHOUTING · 28/11/2020 08:43

I wouldn't be buying from there anyway but the teenagers I know buy elsewhere now anyway. It's all about boho etc.

MynephewR · 28/11/2020 08:46

Probably about 5 years. I'm 29 and all the stuff in topshop feels either far too young for me or too try hard. Also the quality is not what it used to be. I imagine that the only people who shop in top shop are between the age of 14-18 or tall, willowy fashionistas who would look good in a bin bag.

vampirethriller · 28/11/2020 08:47

I bought a black bodice type top in 1999.

crossstitchingnana · 28/11/2020 08:47

About 12 years ago. But I am in my 50s! Mind you, I shop in H and M.

GreekOddess · 28/11/2020 08:47

I bought a work jacket about 4 years ago. Before that it was years and years ago. I never felt the Top Shop love even at the height of its popularity.

MissBaskinIfYoureNasty · 28/11/2020 08:48

I stopped shopping there when I was about 19.. The teens I know now use Boohoo, Sheila, Missguided etc

MissBaskinIfYoureNasty · 28/11/2020 08:49

*Shein not Sheila 🙄

MaverickDanger · 28/11/2020 08:49

They have decent loungewear & coats - two of my favourite purchases this year have been Topshop.

I’ve also liked the maternity wear for not being floral, frumpy dresses.

WilsonMilson · 28/11/2020 08:50

Sign of getting older, but all the young ‘uns seem to get from prettylittething, boohoo etc now.
I’ve not shopped in there for years, feel same about River Island now. Find myself shopping in John Lewis and M&S now - turning into my mother!

sniffsniffcough · 28/11/2020 08:50

About 2010 to be honest. It was amazing when I was at uni but so expensive. After that it just all seemed too young for me, a bit too try hard as a pp said.

supercalifragilistic123 · 28/11/2020 08:50

I used to love topshop!
I looked on the website recently and it all seemed so cheap. I remember it being pricey and choosing carefully as I could only afford a few key items.

YellowandGreenToBeSeen · 28/11/2020 08:51

I’m 50 and last bought there about a year ago, maybe more recently. But they’ve missed out / messed up by not tapping into the online, fast turn around, low cost fashion market. As PP, it’s all about the likes of Pretty Little Thing, BooHoo and MisGuided now for the teens and twenties.

everybodyknowsus · 28/11/2020 08:52

I love their cardigans. And some of their necklaces (I work in a school and recently bought a dinosaur necklace from there which the kids love. I'm 36 Blush)

Directionerforever · 28/11/2020 08:52

It’s too expensive for its demographic when they can jump online to boohoo or ASOS and get the equivalent for 10 quid less. My DD likes Topshop jeans but only ever asks for them at Christmas when I’m paying. If she’s buying out of her own pocket money then it’s primary or online all the way.

Candleabra · 28/11/2020 08:53

I used to love Topshop. I am no longer in its prime demographic (understatement!), but my teenage daughters don't like it either. It seems to be full of costume-like clothes, and even basics like jeans are very expensive.
Another retailer who had lost sight of its market, increased prices, quality down etc etc.

AndAllOurYesterdays · 28/11/2020 08:55

I bought two pairs of jeans from them a couple of years ago. A Jamie and a Leigh and love both. Some of my favourite clothes I've ever owned have been from topshop and I used to love a rummage in the basement of their Oxford Street store. Despite always feeling too frumpy to shop there, even as a teenager.

PoppyOppy · 28/11/2020 08:57

I think I was about 14 the last time I bought anything in Top Shop. Grin

My great grandmother was a dressmaker and she taught me what to look for in the quality of how the clothes were made and Top Shop never really passed her tests. I can hear her voice still when I buy clothes!

Tadpolesandfroglets · 28/11/2020 08:57

Top shop are in trouble, closing I think. Along with Dorothy Perkins and Burton.

Newgirls · 28/11/2020 09:00

Ours never had changing rooms open even pre covid - surely their USP over online.

They were too slow to adapt - should have had more events/in store stuff to make them destinations - I know they did that in Oxford st but I didn’t see it elsewhere.

itchyfinger · 28/11/2020 09:00

Its lost its demographic by being too expensive and not investing properly in its digital channels. 19 year olds like to shop easily online and can do so cheaply on PLT and boohoo.

JumperooSue · 28/11/2020 09:02

I don’t even look anymore! It’s overpriced for what it is and their clothes are tiny I find. Where i’d usually find a 12/14 fine in most shops, I can squeeze even one boob into their tops of the same size.

viccat · 28/11/2020 09:04

At least 12 years. I used to love their skinny jeans and going to the Oxford St store.

Had a look at the website yesterday after they were on the news and nothing really grabbed me at all, it was all just really bland. Even the photos look terrible compared to somewhere like ASOS with well-lit photos and videos.

sofiaaaaaa · 28/11/2020 09:06

I’m 23. My peers and younger are aware of online fast fashion retailers like ASOS, plt etc which has cut into Topshop’s market, but we do still shop there.

I will say that TS has fallen off since I worked there a few years ago, it’s not as fashion forward. However it’s still one of the better high st fashion retailers for young adults/teens. I personally see it as on the same level as Zara.

I wouldn’t say TOPSHOP is highly overpriced, Zara sells items at similar price points (particularly coats/jackets & shoes). £40 on a pair of TS jeans isn’t bad IMO. The good thing about TS is there’s an extended size range (petite, tall, maternity etc).
