To not remember the last thing I bought in TopShop?

So, I know that I am not the key demographic anymore but I can’t remember the last time I bought anything in TOpshop.

But as a teenager a trip to the Oxford street topshop was nirvana and my mum would often buy stuff there as well.

So has topshop just lost its fashion way and competitive pricing irrespective of the pandemic or not?

For me it was about 10 years ago. Jeans were nice & well fitting, nice jumpers and tops for work & their coats were classy (wool with tartan insides).

Now it’s all ripped jeans, cropped everything, holes, slogans and shite materials.

I miss a decent high street store. Oasis was my favourite and that’s been destroyed. Sad

RoseDog · 28/11/2020 09:43

I went in about 14 years ago, and I was a size 6-8 at the time and the smallest jeans I could fit in was a 12, I cried as I hadn't long had my second baby, I had never been a size 12, I vowed never to set foot in the shop again and I didn't!

Bitbusyattheminute · 28/11/2020 09:44

It was always more expensive than New Look, which sold similar stuff. I have a pair of jeans from over 20 years ago cos their moto jeans did the job. Most teens I know have asos app or do missguided / boohoo etc.

Blobson · 28/11/2020 09:46

I'm 40 and I still buy from Topshop. Their jeans are the only ones I can find that are a decent fit and price. They also do great jackets/coats and graphic tees. If you have the time to scroll through a lot of very oddly designed tops and dresses then I often find some great stuff. I do think they've lost their way a bit though. Years ago they seemed to have changed direction and attempted cheap high fashion and everything they designed was odd and unpractical (and overpriced). Before this point I'd bought 90% of clothes from Topshop, since then I'd say I now buy maybe 10% of clothes from Topshop, mainly jeans. I much prefer H&M and Mango now.

Makinglists · 28/11/2020 09:50

I think 1988 - I had a lovely, short, paisley dress with a bow at back (quite hippy) loved that dress. In the intervening years I have shopped in New Look, River Island (just about remember going in there when it was chelsea girl), h&m, DP but don't think I've been back since. I'm old now so wouldn't go there but it's not the first place I would think of to buy a gift for a younger person.

TooExtraImmatureCheddar · 28/11/2020 09:51

Topshop was my favourite shop for a good 15 years between the ages of 15 and 30. For my 30th birthday I had a personal shopping day and bought loads of things. I still buy some things there - partly because it was the closest shop to my office back in the days when I went to the office! It’s also good for petites - I’m 5’2” and have had some great clothes from there. I’m now 37 and struggle with it, though. The quality has dropped off and the styling is mad - I don’t just mean their clubbing wear, but all their workwear has something silly eg waist cutouts in a sheath dress. Not even 20 year olds can wear that to most offices! I like their cut, though - Zara is cut for women with no thighs or boobs. It used to be that the fabric was better in Topshop and clothes were more likely to have pockets, but not any more. And the website is shit. During lockdown they were still showing all their Feb/March stock in August.

WitchesSpelleas · 28/11/2020 09:54

I'm too fat for their stuff now, but a couple of years ago I bought my tiny 75 year old mum a pair of trousers in their sale, which she loved and still wears regularly.

Probably not the market they are aiming at.

TooExtraImmatureCheddar · 28/11/2020 09:55

I don’t think £40 jeans are ridiculously expensive though - I like that there’s a middle price option in between Primark and Levi’s! H&M is cheap and cheerful but their jeans are truly shit. Topshop is aiming at the next level up and I don’t think that’s a bad thing.

Cam2020 · 28/11/2020 09:56

I bought two skirts in there last year but that was the first thing in probably 5 years or so (I'm late 30s).

So many fond memories of shopping in the huge Oxford Circus store and my local one in my home town.

ohhhhnooo · 28/11/2020 09:57

I loved Topshop it was a rare place where multi generations could shop & I still think their boots are the best the high street offered. The trouble is the hollowing out of the middle of the high street. I'm mid 30s now I don't want Boohoo, Primark or Bodon. I really only shop in designer sales.

BobbinThreadbare123 · 28/11/2020 09:58

I used to go in and mooch as a teenager but it was far too expensive for me unless the sale items were absolutely slashed in price. The huge shop in Liverpool was my local one. By the time I was 22/23 I found it all a bit tarty and naff tbh. Late 90s/early 2000s Moto jeans stuff was ok but still overpriced - I could get very similar in Dorothy Perkins or Bay Trading for a lot less. I won't miss it tbh, but I hope everyone who works for it finds another job! They didn't move with the times - they also let men into their women's changing rooms. The sizes are tiny as well; why should I buy a 16 in TS when in every other shop I'm a 10-12?

ohhhhnooo · 28/11/2020 09:59

A retailer with bricks & mortar stores cannot compete with online only in terms of cost & efficiency.

EmeraldShamrock · 28/11/2020 09:59

Early 2000's it was expensive but good quality. Boohoo is very low quality fashion I bought a size 8 top it was so small my 4 y.o niece would fit it all their trousers are see through I'm a genuine 8.

Iwantacookie · 28/11/2020 10:00

Probably when I was a teen and didnt mind paying for a label in my clothes.

Moomin12345 · 28/11/2020 10:01

I feel top shop caters for pre-teens with size 6 and a busy nightlife. Never bought anything there.

ohhhhnooo · 28/11/2020 10:01

Where does everyone shop if they want nice jeans, coats, leather shoes on the high street?

SymbollocksInteractionism · 28/11/2020 10:03

I bought a full length grey oversize coat for £20 in the sale a couple of months ago, get loads of compliments on it.

myneighboursarerude · 28/11/2020 10:03

Where does everyone shop if they want nice jeans, coats, leather shoes on the high street?
I want to know this too!
huuuuunnnndderrricks · 28/11/2020 10:03

It's too expensive based on the quality and design. Primark and H and M are catching up in terms of trends and primark has become more than acceptable to wear to teens . Topshop ( and Phillip green ) has had its day !

CeibaTree · 28/11/2020 10:04

Ahh a visit to the Oxford Circus Topshop was a Friday afternoon ritual when I was a teenager in the late 90s! Don't think I've been in one since though, might check out their website today out of curiosity!

purpleme12 · 28/11/2020 10:05

I think the clothes have definitely changed over the years in Topshop. I think it's a very different shop to what it used to be

agradecida · 28/11/2020 10:07

I think the Arcadia group was in trouble before Covid wasn't it? Along with much of the high street. Lockdowns gave just sped up the inevitable.

Ilikeviognier · 28/11/2020 10:07

I used to love it in the 90s- and that top shop on Oxford street was like my dream!

I haven’t been in for tears now but I assumed that it was because The stuff is too young for me now.

That said- I still love Dorothy P online but that’s largely because I”mpetite and their petite range fits me.

It’s so sad.

TheEmojiFormerlyKnownAsPrince · 28/11/2020 10:08

‘’Where does everyone shop if they want nice jeans, coats, leather shoes on the high street?’’

I don’t think you can get these things on the high street anymore. I buy all my stuff online. Can’t honestly remember the last time l went in a shop and tried something on!

chasingmytail4 · 28/11/2020 10:09

I hadn't shopped in Topshop for about 30 years, but at 50 I had a makeover with Trinny and she put me in a Topshop trouser suit which I love. In the last couple of years I've bought a couple of things from there which have been great, but I think most people think it's somewhere for teenagers to shop, whereas shops like Zara are seen as for a much wider age group.
