To not remember the last thing I bought in TopShop?

So, I know that I am not the key demographic anymore but I can’t remember the last time I bought anything in TOpshop.

But as a teenager a trip to the Oxford street topshop was nirvana and my mum would often buy stuff there as well.

So has topshop just lost its fashion way and competitive pricing irrespective of the pandemic or not?

I loved it as a teenager but it was so expensive so I definitely don't miss it, their target market are slim 'kooky' girls. Sort of like Alexa Chung vibe. I'm not slating them at all but that was definitely who they wanted wearing their stuff.
AdventureCode · 28/11/2020 09:07

I last bought something there 10 or so years ago when i was their target demographic.
I had full time job, no outgoings and still thought their prices were way too high for me. I'd only buy their underwear when the sale meant their thongs were a pound each 😄
It has always been pretty much empty now the last few years when ive been walking past. And when you compare that to H&M and primark or ASOS and Boohoo online, I'm amazed its been limping on as long as it has.

Iamthewombat · 28/11/2020 09:08

I bought a cotton top there five years ago, but ordinarily I wouldn’t think of going into Topshop. I assume it is aimed at under 25s.

However, inspired by reading this thread I looked on their website and they are getting some things right. There are plenty of leather shoes and bags on there, and they have some good dresses. I suspect that they have gone slightly upmarket because they will never be able to compete on price with bloody Boohoo.com etc., who don’t have to pay for physical stores or staff.

I think that those online retailers have really skewed our ideas of what is expensive though. Topshop jeans are £40 (less ATM because of Black Friday) but is that such an unreasonable price for jeans? If you’re paying a lot less than that, somebody is paying the price somewhere.

I’d be interested to know how much business Primark has lost to Boohoo, Missguided etc.

SuperbGorgonzola · 28/11/2020 09:08

I'm mid 30s and I mainly shop on ASOS. £10 for unlimited next day delivery is fab.

I've started experimenting with SHEIN as well and I like it so far apart from the long delivery times. It seemed a bit too good to be true but I bought a big oversized knitted jumper and it's lovely.

Pukkatea · 28/11/2020 09:08

Most of the late 20s/early 30s people I know would still shop there occasionally. Boohoo and Pretty Little Thing are such trash, it really annoys me that they are so successful. Missguided do nice dresses though.

Springersrock · 28/11/2020 09:10

I buy jeans from there fairly regularly and I bought a coat from there a few weeks ago

Both my teen daughters shop there - although we live in the arse end of nowhere so it’s Topshop or H&M

midnightstar66 · 28/11/2020 09:11

I've barely ever bought anything from top shop, very over priced and generally not as nice as equivalents

dayswithaY · 28/11/2020 09:14

The have some really lovely things I think, mainly the graphic T shirts and vintage style dresses. I think they are one of the more innovative brands on the High St, same as Warehouse who are now gone. Primark are crap and their prices are creeping up, not sure where I will buy clothes if they go. If Ashley buys it just watch the quality and range go down.

Thesearmsofmine · 28/11/2020 09:16

I think my last purchase was a maternity dress a few years ago now. I liked that their maternity stuff was fashionable although I imagine since then other places also offer nicer maternity wear.

I used to a be huge fan of Topshop, i loved their going out heels, jewellery, the day dresses and I know loads of people rate the jeans(I don’t wear jeans). I also have some leather boots from there that I’ve had for over 10 years which get better with age.

I wouldn’t say they are overly expensive, compared to boohoo or whatever they are pricier but the boohoo stuff I’ve ordered has always gone back as it is like the tat you could buy on a market stall.

catsmother20 · 28/11/2020 09:16

I think Topshop is like Radio 1, tries very hard to make itself unappealing to anyone over the age of 24 in the vain hope of keeping itself relevant.

ShowOfHands · 28/11/2020 09:17

I haven't been since I was a teen and I'm nearly 40.

My teen shops in charity shops. She hasn't heard of Topshop

Craftycorvid · 28/11/2020 09:18

I go all misty eyed remembering how good TS used to be in the 80s when I were a lass. Back then clothes were expensive but generally better quality. I haven’t shopped there in decades, I suspect, mainly as I stopped shopping in high street chains a long time ago. I’ve mainly worn vintage/charity shop/eBay finds. Nowadays I’ve moved into the Toast-type clothing bracket, going for things with a bit of style and durability - yup, middle aged! 😁

Nottherealslimshady · 28/11/2020 09:21

Same. Clothes shopping went online and they couldn't keep up. I've looked at their website a few times in the past years when looking for stuff but never had any success

Adelais · 28/11/2020 09:21

I haven’t shopped there since I was about 20/21. I always thought the clothes were overpriced and could never afford much from there.

ibblebibbledibble · 28/11/2020 09:26

I loved topshop about 20 Shock years ago, even though the sizing was for waif-like people. I always found after a few washes their tops would be half way up my belly! But I felt so cool just walking out of there with a bag of tops! Around 8-9 years ago my husband said in passing that I was too old for topshop, in a light hearted way. Never brought anything there since!

haliborange0verdose · 28/11/2020 09:27

I'm mid 40s so obviously not their demographic now, but I absolutely loved Topshop and bought 50% of my clothes there as a teen - the other 50% being from Miss Selfridge! I think the last time I can remember shopping at TS, I'd have been about 22. After that I always found it very intimidating and overly "trendy".

TheEmojiFormerlyKnownAsPrince · 28/11/2020 09:28

Shelia😂made me laugh. Sounds Uber stylish!

sofiaaaaaa · 28/11/2020 09:29

@Iamthewombat just read your post after seeing this on Instagram and thought I’d share!

PLT had items on sale for pennies yesterday and you’re right, when clothes are that cheap it does beg the question of who is paying the price elsewhere?

TheEmojiFormerlyKnownAsPrince · 28/11/2020 09:33

Top shop and Zara are totally different, no similarities at all!

Zara is massive, Topshop is failing. How can they be the same?

Zara uses much much better fabrics and is just much more on the ball style wise.

Topshop uses shit fabrics and just limps along, it’s lost its way. There’s nothing super stylish or cutting edge there. It used to be like that but not now.

My nearest Zara is always rammed. Topshop is empty.

myneighboursarerude · 28/11/2020 09:34

I’ll be heartbroken if I can’t get jamie jeans from them anymore! The only ones I’ve ever found that consistently fit like a glove and wash and wash and wash!

TheEmojiFormerlyKnownAsPrince · 28/11/2020 09:34

Craftycorvid, I have no memories of Topshop being good quality or even good in the 80’s

Miss Selridge was the place to be then!

Baaaahhhhh · 28/11/2020 09:35

I buy my jeans there, Jamie jeans are great. DD's buy jeans too, and the odd bit and piece. I think the quality has gone down, and the price up though. They don't buy from the cheap bad quality places, Boohoo, PLT and Primark are terrible. They tend to save up and buy from Hollister, Superdry, A&F, French Connection.

SquareSausage17 · 28/11/2020 09:36

I think it’s too youthful and expensive now. It’s never been cheap for the high street, and teens and young women these days tend to buy from much cheaper retailers (missguided, boohoo, PLT etc). It was always the place when I was a teen, but I don’t associate it with today’s young women and girls really.

phoenixrosehere · 28/11/2020 09:36

Two weeks ago online. Two dresses for work, would have been four but I didn’t love the other two enough. Shipping was fast, easy to return. Bought from their sale, spent £40.

I work for a retailer that has some of the styles that Topshop has, and even with my staff discount they’re still more than what I pay at Topshop on top of the majority of things not suiting my body whatsoever. Topshop I can at least get dresses that are more fitted and slimmer without being clingy, and at a length I don’t have to get anything hemmed.

hammeringinmyhead · 28/11/2020 09:37

It was too expensive when I was a teenager earning £3 an hour (2001). I bought a few pairs of Jamies in 2018, including maternity, but honestly people I know either pay £25 for jeans or £70 from places like Levis, department store concessions or AllSaints. £40-£50 for high street jeans is expensive which didn't help Oasis and Warehouse either.

Zara charges similar but is originally based around the Spanish market and owns the cheaper "competitors" anyway like Bershka and Stradivarius.
