To not remember the last thing I bought in TopShop?

So, I know that I am not the key demographic anymore but I can’t remember the last time I bought anything in TOpshop.

But as a teenager a trip to the Oxford street topshop was nirvana and my mum would often buy stuff there as well.

So has topshop just lost its fashion way and competitive pricing irrespective of the pandemic or not?

I've chatted to my mum about this. The price of decent jeans hasn't changed much according to her even though inflation has. So she reckons that in the 80s buying a pair of jeans was a much more significant purchase

And there are way more options now than there once was. I remember buying my first pair of Topshop jeans I think maybe seven/ eight years ago and they’re the same price as they are now.

YANBU - I have a Topman jumper I probably bought 5 years ago. Don’t remember the last time I bought something in the women’s department though. I’ve always found their clothes are cut quite straight so never bothered as I couldn’t get them to fit me well. (They probably aren’t anymore, everything seems to be cut for an hourglass now!)

BobbinThreadbare123 · 28/11/2020 12:02

@Iamthewombat OK....I think I've figured out who you are.

cologne4711 · 28/11/2020 12:19

I don't think I've ever bought anything in Top Shop. When I was young enough I was too fat, and now that I am slim enough, I am too old!

PatchworkElmer · 28/11/2020 13:18

I have a faux leather cropped jacket from about 6 years ago. I’ve avoided since due to PG’s dubious ethics. And tbh, there wasn’t much that suited me anyway- the clothes really weren’t cut for my shape!

ChochoCrazyCat · 28/11/2020 13:19

@ohhhhnooo Zara, Mango, Orsay for clothes. Also Dorothy Perkins before my local branch shut. Not sure if the chain still exists.
For shoes, Shuh, Clark's, Debenhams.

I prefer a more European style generally. I have relatives abroad and bulk buy a lot when I go to visit. Their Zara has a better selection and Orsay (not sure if it exists here?) has good quality, stylish clothes that also look "grown up".

Sadly the British high street is declining. In my city the choice is either poor quality, "youth" fashion with rips everywhere and strange cuts, or frumpy M&S and Next. Nothing in-between for 30 somethings.

How clever of you! Yes, I am lady Tina Green, on board the yacht Lionheart.

Givemeabreak88 · 28/11/2020 13:49

I did Hmm at the poster who said she cried her eyes out at wearing a size 12 as it that’s so hideously massive

ViciousJackdaw · 28/11/2020 14:11

It is ridiculous how so many women get hung up about the number on the label. I've been unwell so am not back up to my usual weight yet but usually wear clothes that range from size 6 to size 14. I suspect most of us have a wardrobe that fits well but spans at least three sizes.

BobbinThreadbare123 · 28/11/2020 14:11

I'm not sure TS can compete with ASOS. A lot of my work wear comes from supermarkets nowadays; there's some really decent quality stuff there so no need to venture onto the high street. In the past I'd have gone to the Arcadia group to see what they had.

phoenixrosehere · 28/11/2020 14:14

ASOS actually sells TS clothing.

QueenOfLabradors · 28/11/2020 14:15

The last thing I bought in Top Shop was in the mid 1980's, in a sale basket for 20p, a dusky pink warm cotton knit top with a kangaroo pocket. And I STILL WEAR IT!!! It is a bit worn and there are a couple of small holes, but considering how many times it must have been washed it has done brilliantly, the colour and shape are just perfect.

I was off grid for several years after that, then when I returned I tried stuff on a few times but didn't like any of it. I did get given a pair of their maternity jeans as a hand-me-down when I needed them in 1998, and they were good, the friend I lent them on to was also very happy, and they were last spotted being bought with joy at an NCT sale I was helping out at. Nowadays I only buy underwear and practical outdoors clothing new (I work outside in open countryside all year round), everything else is charity shops etc for ethical reasons.

BobbinThreadbare123 · 28/11/2020 14:21

@phoenixrosehere yes, and New Look (they're not doing that well either, are they?) and some others too. So I imagine if you live away from large towns and cities you'll probably order from something like ASOS rather than making the trek in to town; I certainly do!

ohhhhnooo · 28/11/2020 14:23

@ChochoCrazyCat not heard of Orsay & agree that Zara's often has better options when abroad. Dorothy Perkins is too safe for me. I really struggle with shoes, Topshop is the only high street place I will buy footwear.

AngeloMysterioso · 28/11/2020 14:35

I bought a maternity top there last year, and felt so ashamed of myself for sending money in Philip Green’s direction that I returned it a few days later.

phoenixrosehere · 28/11/2020 14:45

I love ASOS for the video of models walking in the outfits so I can see how thin the fabric is and have an idea of length and fit. New Look is usually miss for me especially with their jeans because I can’t get them past my ankle yet don’t struggle with any other retailers’ jeans. ASOS brand itself is hit and miss, looks good on the models but the quality isn’t always great when you get it.

I think with ASOS, it is their variety of brands that keeps them at the top. I love Free People and it’s easier to buy them from there than actual Free People, plus the only Free People shops are in Chelsea or Covent Garden London and I’m around Oxford.

wowfudge · 28/11/2020 15:03

I've never bought anything from Topshop and I'm now in my late forties. When I was younger they were just too expensive compared to other shops and I've never been that into fashion as such. The other shop I've never bought anything from is Miss Selfridge. Chelsea Girl/River Island and Dorothy Perkins yes over the years. I've also bought things from Wallis too, but have increasingly found the stuff in there looks cheap compared to how it looks online.

pinkpetal2 · 28/11/2020 15:05

I'm 27 and I prefer ASOS or primark boohoo never appeals to me as everything is see through or fits wrong. Pretty little thing I just associate with instagram girls so not for me!
I stopped using Topshop around 2013 when I was 20. It feels old fashioned now.

teaandcustardcreamsx · 28/11/2020 15:11

I’m sixteen and slightly proud to say so I’ve never bought anything from Topshop. Only been in there once to have a laugh around a year ago

LetsGoFlyAKiteee · 28/11/2020 15:16

The quality isn't that great and the way the black Joni jeans fade..for the price you pay you expect more. I've had black jeans from Dorothy that have lasted ages and kept their colour. Sad about them going.

Suzeyshoes · 28/11/2020 15:18

I still buy lots there. Wouldn’t buy my jeans anywhere else. I do think they’ve gone too casual though and are targeting a student look which unfortunately doesn’t bring in the money.
Don’t agree it’s entirely the same demographic as Boohoo etc as Boohoo and the gang are known for being cheap tat. TS quality is better.

Suzeyshoes · 28/11/2020 15:23

As for ASOS, I trust the well known brands but the lesser known brands and own buy product is dreadful quality. Last time I ordered something it looked so nice on the website and video but horrendous in reality.

RaeburnPlace · 28/11/2020 15:27

I'm not their demographic at all, (by more than 25 years😂) but I'm tiny. Top Shop jeans and trousers fit me perfectly. I'll miss them.

Imapotato · 28/11/2020 16:18

I haven’t brought anything in there since I was a teenage. Teen dds don’t buy in there either. They go for new look or H&M. Top shop is twice the price and no better quality really.

BLToutanowhere · 28/11/2020 16:36

What's wrong with shareholders receiving dividends? From what I can see no dividends have been awarded in the last couple of years in at least Arcadia Group and TopShop/TopMan.

I don't think I've ever even shopped in Top Man as frankly I'm not the skinny type they cater for. The wife has purchased some jeans but she's petite so pretty much pounces on any shop selling something that may actually fit her.

Dotty P's from what I can see (and usually I'm being 'bloke' when in there and praying for the world to end) was like a lot of places and was trying to push hip and trendy (bang on trend or whatever the term is) and sparkly on women who just want nicely cut, well priced items.
