To not remember the last thing I bought in TopShop?

So, I know that I am not the key demographic anymore but I can’t remember the last time I bought anything in TOpshop.

But as a teenager a trip to the Oxford street topshop was nirvana and my mum would often buy stuff there as well.

So has topshop just lost its fashion way and competitive pricing irrespective of the pandemic or not?

@Iamthewombat are you aiming that at my comment upthread? Who's crying?
If you can find the larger sizes in TS then you're very lucky. No point going in ferreting round when you know M&S round the corner will have some comfy jeans available!

Iamthewombat · 28/11/2020 10:41

But they got arrogant and didn't adjust to a changing market.

Wouldn’t sell dresses for £5 and jeans for £8, you mean?

BigPlanes · 28/11/2020 10:42

I have one thing from topshop total. I’ve only bought one thing ever and happen to own it just now in my 30s. But I bought that online because I could see the measurements.

As a large chested teenager it was hell getting stuck in their stupid tiny tiny clothes. Angry

Cherryberrypies · 28/11/2020 10:42

Cheap fast fashion is top shops downfall. You can buy a dress for £20 in boohoo. Similar one could cost £50/60 in topshop.

Sallycinnamum · 28/11/2020 10:43

I used to pop to Topshop oxford st in my lunch break pre kids and spent an absolute fortune in there over the years.

The quality was pretty good and there was always something to buy, especially their jeans and tea dresses.

Admittedly I am now not their prime audience being in my 40s but my God most of their range is absolute tat and appalling quality.

I'll be sad to see Topshop go but if the store is rescued it needs a complete overhaul.

emilybrontescorsett · 28/11/2020 10:44

Dd has bought jeans and jackets from there. They are quite pricey though.

I can’t be bothered looking. Are you the one who cried in the changing room because she didn’t want to wear a size 12? Or the one who indignantly asked, “why should I wear a size 12?”

I find it difficult to believe that Topshop only carry sizes 6 and 8 and that you couldn’t find a ‘larger’ size 12. Saints preserve us if you want 12 to be considered a larger size.

If you want the M&S jeans because they are ‘comfy’, great. Why were you looking in Topshop if you wanted M&S jeans? Or are you saying that you went to M&S because their sizing is more to your liking and that’s what ‘comfy’ means? Why do you care? Nobody is looking inside your clothes, you know.

Iamthewombat · 28/11/2020 10:46

The last paragraph should have been bold, since it was a quote from another poster. The bit about ‘ferreting about’.

ohhhhnooo · 28/11/2020 10:48

I tend to buy from the H and M umbrella, so Cos, Arket, Other Stories, Monki, Weekday. Bits from Uniqlo and Massimo Dutti. And Zara. The only ones of these which are actual shops near me are Monki and Zara. It’s not worth going into town for 2 shops.

Yes I like Cos, & some Mango bits. What I really used to like about Topshop is say tea dresses or blazers were on trend they would have options that were just a little bit different.

I gravitate more towards Ganni, Rixo & Maje now but obviously ££££ and quality not necessarily worth it.

ohhhhnooo · 28/11/2020 10:50

Topshop does go up to an 18 online. I've always found their sizes accurate & probably more generous than Zara. I've never shopped in M&S though.

dayslikethese1 · 28/11/2020 10:51

It will be sad if all the high street shops go and there's nothing left but online cheap places like Boohoo etc. I may be unusual but I prefer to buy clothes in actual shops and try them on etc (in normal times).

OptimisticSix · 28/11/2020 10:54

1998, I was 21 and it was a black duffel coat - which I had for 20 years (God I feel old). It was some type of suede material but washed brilliantly, the only issue was the arms were really skinny and you couldn't wear a jumper underneath. It cost a fortune for me at that time Grin

AlizarinRed · 28/11/2020 10:55

I can't help feeling this is another situation where the taxpayer funds former workers' pensions whilst the millionaire owner sails off in his luxury yacht ..... I hope not

WithGusto2 · 28/11/2020 10:55

There’s just so much competition now, and Topshop has always been overpriced.

I’ve been getting some really nice very high waist raw hem jeans form there for a couple of years actually. They do them in petite which is ideal for me.

Iamthewombat · 28/11/2020 10:56

I would be amazed if Arcadia got any kind of bailout, for that reason: antipathy to Philip Green.

SendHelp30 · 28/11/2020 10:56

I still buy from topshop and, same as another PP, I don’t know what I’ll do without my Jamie jeans!
I like their lounge wear and I’ve a couple of blazers from there too

ohhhhnooo · 28/11/2020 11:00

I mean it was never going to end well when PG took the 1.2bn dividend.

2 floral midi dresses, both polyester one from Boohoo at £20 & one from Topshop at £35. I think there is no comparison, yes the Topshop one is more expensive but it's has a shape & style & nicer print.

ivfbeenbusy · 28/11/2020 11:00

I bought some Leigh jeans a couple of years ago (I'm 36) - expensive for high street at £50 and the zip went fairly quickly. Even Mark's and spencer ivy jeans for £19.50 (or less when they have 20% off) are a million times better

I was shocked when I went into top shop after not going in for a few years. Half as much stock as they used to have, no staples, all a bit chavvy/trashy or try hard?

Zara is a much better for keeping up with trends and flattering cuts.

TeaBanditTeej · 28/11/2020 11:04

The petite range is the perfect for me, honestly I don't shop anywhere else. It's my sort of style too, I can find an outfit for every occasion. Makes me very happy! 😊

VioletCharlotte · 28/11/2020 11:27

Top Shop was brilliant when I was a teenager but it seems very expensive now for what it is. Teenagers are the target market, but they can buy similar clothes for much less on BooHoo, PrettyLittleThing, etc

I'm sad that so many shops are disappearing. Online shopping is ok, but I remember how I used to love spending hours trailing round the shops and trying on clothes. Shopping for fun will soon be a thing of the past.

phoenixrosehere · 28/11/2020 11:32

I think that those online retailers have really skewed our ideas of what is expensive though. Topshop jeans are £40 (less ATM because of Black Friday) but is that such an unreasonable price for jeans? If you’re paying a lot less than that, somebody is paying the price somewhere.

That is a good point. I don’t think the prices for Topshop have really changed that much in the last five years.

allthegoodusernameshavegone · 28/11/2020 11:37

I was never really a fan, even when I was young & thin, I am short so everything was really long and their sizing tiny. I think it quite pricey for youngsters and it was only in large high streets or city centres, where the likes of Newlook are in most small towns.

SuperbGorgonzola · 28/11/2020 11:38

I've chatted to my mum about this. The price of decent jeans hasn't changed much according to her even though inflation has. So she reckons that in the 80s buying a pair of jeans was a much more significant purchase
MrsToothyBitch · 28/11/2020 11:38

I haven't been in for years! I used to like their tops as a teen but rarely bought much anyway due to the price. I'm 30 now and I think the last thing I bought in there was nice black gloves in late 2010.

Raffie13 · 28/11/2020 11:40

I buy the jeans but other than that, can't remember the last time!
