To not remember the last thing I bought in TopShop?

So, I know that I am not the key demographic anymore but I can’t remember the last time I bought anything in TOpshop.

But as a teenager a trip to the Oxford street topshop was nirvana and my mum would often buy stuff there as well.

So has topshop just lost its fashion way and competitive pricing irrespective of the pandemic or not?

That’s the thing in the 90s the birthday trip to Oxford Circus was amazing and some seriously happy memories

Top shop and Zara are totally different, no similarities at all!

Yes Zara is part of the worlds largest clothing chain they have a ton of power just in the sheer number of units they purchase.

I like Zara for something's but don't the quality is that good.

Leigh jeans. I have about a dozen pairs. I haven't been in an actual Topshop shop for over a year now. The sizing seems OK to me.

HighHeelBoots · 28/11/2020 10:13

I used to spend a lot in topshop for my DD
I stopped buying there when they started allowing males in the female changing rooms

hammeringinmyhead · 28/11/2020 10:13

ASOS Ridley are as good as Jamie jeans for me in terms of fit, and £28 full price, so I think Topshop denim is expensive.

TheEmojiFormerlyKnownAsPrince · 28/11/2020 10:14

No the quality isn’t brilliant, but it’s streets ahead in style. And the quality is pretty much the same as Top Shop

ohhhhnooo · 28/11/2020 10:17

@myneighboursarerude all my cheap jeans are Topshop or Oasis. I have things from both retailers that are 5-10 yrs old that I still love & will easily wear into my late 40s.

ohhhhnooo · 28/11/2020 10:18

@TheEmojiFormerlyKnownAsPrince which online stores though?

housemover0009 · 28/11/2020 10:18

I'll never forget in the news when the mistreatment of animals to make angora products was exposed.
All high street shops (New Look, H&M etc) stopped using angora and responded to the press... except Top Shop who just carried on.

I stopped shopping with them after that

Crystal87 · 28/11/2020 10:20

I've not set foot in Topshop since about 2005. It's too expensive for what it is and the clothes too trendy for me.

Takethewinefromtheswine · 28/11/2020 10:22

Makeover with Trinny sounds intrinnyguing...

Topshop was the aspirational destination of my youth and always the scene of pre disco preparation on a Saturday afternoon. I remember buying a long, full white skirt, a neon belt and a cropped peach top for £10 in 1987.
Bought a coat last year and needed to take out a small mortgage.

I visit the Oxford Circus one, I do find small ones (as with DP) are unattractive bargain basements with discounts over the windows and clothes slung over rails.

They are definitely now more fashion forward but I don't think their footwear is anything like the same quality. The other issue I have with Zara & Primark is you often see everyone wearing the same item.

I loved Topshop Boutique & have loads of lovely silk pieces.
I shop a fair bit in Cos now but they are more expensive.

Skipsurvey · 28/11/2020 10:22

i shop for my adult dc, at christmas
ds i buy from top man but he now prefers next

dd i buy from there but not religiously. it used to be their favourite

MissCalamity · 28/11/2020 10:26

Probably early 00's when I was a slimmer and young thing!
Oh, tell a lie, I bought a black maternity top in 2009, which was really nice as it was very floaty 😆

dayslikethese1 · 28/11/2020 10:27

I don't think TS is aimed at my body shape tbh. Plus everything seems to have some weird detail or cut out in it. Jean's and tshirts decent and some nice jumpers though.

psychomath · 28/11/2020 10:27

I never liked Topshop even when I was young. New Look were more reasonably priced and River Island had a better selection of 'kooky' stuff (plus a significant amount that went too far that way and was hideous!)

ChochoCrazyCat · 28/11/2020 10:33

I wouldn't say top shop has ever been competitively priced. Always thought it was overpriced and rarely bought stuff from there. When I was at uni I always wondered how my friends could afford it...£20 for a simple T shirt or £40 for a dress is a lot when you're living on a student loan and a part time waitressing job. Plus the quality isn't much better than cheaper shops like New Look.

psychomath · 28/11/2020 10:33

Desigual is my favourite high street fashion retailer now, though I think the only physical shop left in the UK is in London. It's expensive and not to everyone's taste, though. Not sure about jeans but I do like their coats.

Iamthewombat · 28/11/2020 10:33

MN is hilarious sometimes.

In any given month there will be a thread bleating about vanity sizing, and why do shops do it, etc etc.

Then you get a thread like this where people actually cry because they don’t like the size label in a Topshop garment, or refuse to by things from Topshop because “why should I buy a 12?” etc.

You can’t blame shops, really, can you?

TheEmojiFormerlyKnownAsPrince · 28/11/2020 10:33

Oooohnoooo, where l live the high street is crap, so not many shops.

I tend to buy from the H and M umbrella, so Cos, Arket, Other Stories, Monki, Weekday. Bits from Uniqlo and Massimo Dutti. And Zara. The only ones of these which are actual shops near me are Monki and Zara. It’s not worth going into town for 2 shops.

Haven’t bought from DP, Wallis or Too Shop for 15 years

Ginkypig · 28/11/2020 10:34

@PoppyOppy

I think I was about 14 the last time I bought anything in Top Shop. Grin

My great grandmother was a dressmaker and she taught me what to look for in the quality of how the clothes were made and Top Shop never really passed her tests. I can hear her voice still when I buy clothes!

Teach us o wise one,

pass the sacred knowledge of your ancestors to the hungry eyes of the masses.

Grin

Seriously what are the tests?

Royalbloo · 28/11/2020 10:36

I got a lovely green dress from there about 6 years ago. But they got arrogant and didn't adjust to a changing market. Sad but so many have gone the same way; Karen Millen, Oasis, Warehouse etc.

Royalbloo · 28/11/2020 10:36

Ah the tests, like seams, buttons etc. My Nan used to say the same.

Lillyhatesjaz · 28/11/2020 10:37

I'm in my 50s so not the target market but I have never bought anything from top shop, I could never fit into the tiny sizes I will miss Dorothy perkins though. My daughter is 19 and a smaller build than I ever was she shops in primark , and newlook mainly and some on line. We live in an area which doesn't have zara or some of the other stores which have been mentioned.

Shopgirl1 · 28/11/2020 10:38

I’m 43 and live in Topshop jeans - Jamie and Leigh. I don’t know what I’ll do if they close. I also picked up a really good skirt there earlier this year. Generally don’t look at anything except jeans, but this caught my eye walking past.
