To be deceived by Quaker oats

I also assumed that the Quaker oat sachets were different to the box of ‘rolled oats’ (the former are branded as quick cook, maybe more finely processed). An investigation reveals that they’re virtually identical, and that the big box is actually a con. What I assumed it would be is the third variety of oats depicted in this picture (M&S wholegrain oats), which are so clearly superior in texture etc..

AIBU? I thought ‘wholegrain rolled oats’ were the good stuff but clearly I’m wrong.

All oats are quick cook.

Oats are oats to be honest. Some are ground down more. No Biggie.

But the M&S ones take at least 10 minutes to cook. The Quaker ones take 2. And the difference in texture is huge.

If you're happy to wait 10mins then have the 'nicer' ones.

2mins is much quicker, clearly not foing to be as great.

Same as rice and microwave rice differences

The healthiest (and tastiest) are steel cut oats, they are whole oats chopped up rather than rolled oats which have some nutrients lost in the process. Tesco is the only place I've found them - the brand is Hamlyn pinhead oats.

FiveToFour · 27/11/2020 21:36

What about Quaker Jumbo oats, which is what I prefer? They are much better ,more body, better texture Smile
They look like the M and S ones to me.

Rolled Oats
Rolled oats are a type of lightly processed whole-grain food. Traditionally, they are made from oat groats that have been dehusked and steamed, before being rolled into flat flakes under heavy rollers and then stabilized by being lightly toasted.[1]

Thick-rolled oats are large whole flakes, and thin-rolled oats are smaller, fragmented flakes. Rolled whole oats, without further processing, can be cooked into a porridge and eaten as old-fashioned oats or Scottish oats, but more highly fragmented and processed rolled oats absorb water much more easily and therefore cook faster into a porridge, so they are sometimes called "quick" or "instant" oats.[
Wikipedia

Oatmeal is not steamed or rolled, just ground (fine, medium or coarse) and makes a nicer porridge, imo, but takes longer to cook.

I don't even cook oats...just stir in some yoghurt and fruit and eat...

Yes, steel-cut = oatmeal

I thought Lockdown was getting to me when I cleaned my skirting boards but this is extra.

Porridge is great. I love the cinnamon flavoured sachet stuff. Very wintery.

Clockstop · 27/11/2020 21:38

Flavahans is the only way to go for oats

00100001 · 27/11/2020 21:39

We get Aldo's organic jumbo oats, they're great

EggBobbin · 27/11/2020 21:41

They’re not even made by Quakers. Quakers were synonymous with honesty and good value back in the day (I mean, I’m sure they are now too, but it’s less of a stereotype!) So the non Quaker ppl who made Quaker Oats just stuck one on the box

Schummakker · 27/11/2020 21:41

Second Flavahans!

LunaNorth · 27/11/2020 21:43

The phrase ‘steel-cut oats’ really sets my teeth on edge. It makes me think of metal blades screeching on each other. It’s a real ‘nails down a blackboard’ feeling.

I can’t buy them because of it Confused

Redolent · 27/11/2020 21:44

Thanks for the suggestions Smile

Goes on oat purchasing spree

18 month old calls them ‘ice-cream’ so have been enthusiastically exploiting her naivety.

The top ones are more jumbo rolled oats. If you want to be fussy with oats being proper then you want oatmeal. Mornflake medium ground is nice. Stir a lot like risotto, enjoy.

CupboardMonster · 27/11/2020 21:45

Flahavans are the best oats I've ever had, I prefer rolled oats to oatmeal.

Poppingnostopping · 27/11/2020 21:45

That's so funny, keep going until she grows up and eats real ice-cream!

DonttouchthatLarry · 27/11/2020 21:45

Mornflake are the best - they do all different kinds.

FromABook · 27/11/2020 21:46

I love you for that photo.

I have no opinion on oats, as we'll eat them however they come in this house, but I do love that you set them out like that for a comparison!

Thank you, OP.

I’m glad my 8am oat research study wasn’t in vain!

@Poppingnostopping

Will be filed under “white lies your parents encouraged when you were a child” Grin

But do we agree they are all the same kind just one isn't as rolled as the others?

RaptorInaPorkPieHat · 27/11/2020 21:57

I honestly thought you'd sat and separated a bag of oats for that picture for a moment there. Wink

Other than that, I can't help you because I'm a Ready Brek basic bitch Grin

Standrewsschool · 27/11/2020 22:05

I never buy the flavoured oats. However, cinnamon sounds nice, with a chopped up apple.

Thank you for the research op.

ViciousJackdaw · 27/11/2020 22:06

YANBU. Quaker oats ARE deceptive. Last time I bought a box, I poured some out, only to find that they were Unitarian oats.
