To be deceived by Quaker oats

I also assumed that the Quaker oat sachets were different to the box of ‘rolled oats’ (the former are branded as quick cook, maybe more finely processed). An investigation reveals that they’re virtually identical, and that the big box is actually a con. What I assumed it would be is the third variety of oats depicted in this picture (M&S wholegrain oats), which are so clearly superior in texture etc..

AIBU? I thought ‘wholegrain rolled oats’ were the good stuff but clearly I’m wrong.

sachets contain the worst kind of oats, The scrapings off the mill floor. If you want decent porridge buy steel cut pinhead oats. If you can't get them then buy jumbo rolled oats. If you are on a budget then buy a large bag of basic rolled oats. They cook just as quickly as those ghastly instant sachets.

Pinhead oats are best left to soak overnight, but don't have to be if you have time in the morning.

Genevieva · 28/11/2020 12:46

@Allthequalitystreet you need to cook pinhead oats in water with a pinch of salt then serve the porridge with cold milk. You will find that stirring the oats is enough to make give them a creamy texture as they contain soluble gluten.

Ooft I really want some of that microwave golden syrup porridge now! 😂

JacobReesMogadishu · 28/11/2020 13:36

I just use the sachets to take to work. Well I actually used to use the pots but M&S stopped doing coconut porridge pots so I had to move to sachets.

SewingBeeAddict · 28/11/2020 13:36

@JacobReesMogadishu

Desiccated coconut is a good idea. I think the tins of creamed coconut would make it too expensive.
The small tins are £1 Surely you would only add a tbsp per serving so it would last 4/5 days?
JacobReesMogadishu · 28/11/2020 13:36

I don’t tend to eat porridge every day, once or twice a week.

NannyR · 28/11/2020 13:41

I buy blocks of creamed coconut instead of coconut milk, it works out a fair bit cheaper and there's no waste if you only need a small amount. It keeps for ages in the fridge. You can find it on the world food aisles in supermarkets alongside the Asian spices.

Meraas · 28/11/2020 13:42

@BarbaraofSeville

You can replicate the sachet experience at a fraction of the cost, at home at least, by using a small cup or other container (we have a shot glass that holds almost exactly the same amount of oats as comes in a sachet) to measure out one of quick cook oats and two of milk and microwave for two minutes.

Saves all that wasteful non recyclable packaging too as the sachets are that combination of plastic and paper that is not currently recyclable.

Good point.

but its not that time consuming or difficult to use 5 small clip locks and pour in oats and liquid, on a Sunday night top with cinnamon and chop an apple in, or mashed banana etc just before eating

All you microwaving experts, how do you avoid Vesuvius? And the associated clean up job.

ivykaty44 · 28/11/2020 18:32

@SewingBeeAddict sorry.....!

Ajile · 28/11/2020 18:34

Overnight oats are the best.

Put 2 tablespoons of cheapo any brand supermarket oats (75p per kilo) in a jar. I've saved my Bonne Maman jars for this, the wide neck is better. Add 1 tablespoon of full fat Greek yogurt (none of the low fat rubbish), seeds, nuts, fruits of choice (I mix it up, depending on what is in the fruit bowl and store cupboard). Top up with milk, give it a good shake, so the oats are covered and the yogurt is diluted by the milk. Then leave it in the fridge overnight.

Next morning, add a drizzle of honey, and if it looks a bit thick, add a drop more milk. It's amazing, honest.

SuperbGorgonzola · 28/11/2020 18:49

Agree with Ajile. . I need to get back on the overnight oars train!

I like frozen berries in mine with a bit of vanilla extract.

No worries Smile
Was just answering why people use them

I use one of those Systema bowls with a clippy lip and a vent which I open. Bung in oats, add oat milk and soak overnight then open vent and ping.
SewingBeeAddict · 28/11/2020 18:58

Clippy lid Blush

BananaPie · 28/11/2020 19:07

You need to experiment a bit, as it probably depends on the bowl and the power of your microwave. This never overflows for me:

40g Quaker Oats
280g semi skimmed milk

Full power 3mins 30 secs

Stir

Half power 1 min 30 secs

Done

NannyR · 28/11/2020 19:59

The shape of your bowl/cooking vessel affects how much porridge explodes in the microwave, something shallower with a wide neck is much better than tall and thin.

amicissimma · 28/11/2020 21:36

Thank you. I shall continue to experiment. I was using a soup-type bowl as I thought the wider the better, but the mess was, er, interesting!

I'll try a proper bowl shaped bowl. A lid is brave ...

Apologies if I leave globs of porridge all over the thread!

N0rthern · 28/11/2020 22:48

I love overnight oats, especially when I’m dieting- I make them with chia seeds and frozen raspberries.
Normal times I favour porridge made in my tefal multi cooker- takes 5-8 mins and doesn’t require constant stirring or generate microwave mess. My bowl needs replacing though and I’m wondering if it’s too dull to ask for a new one for Christmas.

Flavahans is the only way to go for oats
Yes, yes, yes! I’m addicted to them!
icanboogieboogiewoogie · 28/11/2020 23:35

I love Mumsnet. Porridge is a pretty healthy breakfast in general, but it is important that we identify the most healthy oats so we can look down on those who eat inferior oats.

WotsitWiggle · 28/11/2020 23:39

I've bought 1.5kg of organic oats from my local refillable store, to use for overnight oats. I've got three recipes perfected now - cacao raspberry, cacao banana and mango coconut - and will be trying two new recipes this week. No refined sugar, high in protein - unfortunately high in calories too (thanks to nuts and seeds) - but I grab a pot in the morning and it fills me up to lunchtime.
