To be deceived by Quaker oats

I also assumed that the Quaker oat sachets were different to the box of ‘rolled oats’ (the former are branded as quick cook, maybe more finely processed). An investigation reveals that they’re virtually identical, and that the big box is actually a con. What I assumed it would be is the third variety of oats depicted in this picture (M&S wholegrain oats), which are so clearly superior in texture etc..

AIBU? I thought ‘wholegrain rolled oats’ were the good stuff but clearly I’m wrong.

I made the mistake of buying ready brek the other week as it was cheaper than the sachets. Omg I can't be I used it eat it. It's absolutely vile!

@wigglerose

No offense OP but you need a hobby. I know lockdown is driving us all demented but it's Friday night. Do a jigsaw or something! Wink
I’ve just been playing a board game with my husband (One Deck Dungeon). He’d be horrified to be know I’ve been stealthily posting about porridge instead of focusing on our mission.

Hang on OP, it’s the sachets that are the con, not the big box. They are indeed the same stuff, but with the sachets you are paying loads extra to have them already weighed out for you.

SunshineYello · 27/11/2020 22:49

😂 this post is amazing!
I really want to try a breakfast recipe of baked oats, milk, chopped pear and apple, and cinnamon. I know it's not exactly fine cuisine, but I can't even manage toast at moment!

EssentialHummus · 27/11/2020 22:51

@NannyR how do you make pinhead oats edible? I have 3kg of the stuff in a cupboard and no amount of soaking, stirring or googling has done the trick.

This is true, but there’s the dangerous thrill of pouring milk into the sachet ‘fill level’ without spilling it. Surely their main selling point!

Mornflake Jumbo oats are brilliant - I always make overnight porridge, great for that.
I ended up with a box of quaker oats earlier in the year, when oats disappeared from most of the supermarkets - ghastly powdery stuff, used some up for crumble topping & made do until mornflake were back in stock.

Flahavens are good too.

Diva66 · 27/11/2020 23:01

The Oatmeal of Alford makes the best porridge ever.

(Though ma granny would be horrified to see me microwaving it Grin)

NannyR · 27/11/2020 23:02

EssentialHummus I put one cup of oats and three cups of water in a saucepan with a good pinch of salt, bring it to the boil then stir it really well. Switch off the heat, put a lid on and leave it overnight. This makes enough for about four days breakfasts so I store it in a tub in the fridge. When I want some, I put a dollop in a bowl, add a good splash of milk and microwave for two minutes.
It's a different texture to normal porridge, slightly chewy and nutty almost, not smooth and creamy, but it's very tasty and low GI so keeps me full all morning.

passthemustard · 27/11/2020 23:04

Chopped up apple (or pear) sautéed in butter and spoonful of sugar until tender, add oats and milk (whole milk is amazing) and cook until oats are soft. Add more milk if needed and a quarter teaspoon of sweet cinnamon.

I always buy the cheap Sainsbury's oats.

Flibbitygibbit · 27/11/2020 23:05

I love the fact that the 2 minute oats in a sachet are measured for you...add a banana when cooked and they are delish

laughoutquiet · 27/11/2020 23:06

I made porridge yesterday with a can of coconut milk and some berries. It's gorgeous!

cbt944 · 27/11/2020 23:07

Quick oats come with a bonus high percentage of insect parts per pack.

NewlyGranny · 27/11/2020 23:10

Mornflake for the jumbo oats to make muesli; Lidl rolled oats for porridge. I make what I call Berlin porridge because DD2 and I had a week in Berlin a couple of summers ago and had this in a cafe for breakfast one memorable wet morning.

Sprinkle cinammon on the cooked porridge, add half an eating apple, chopped, and a few walnut pieces. Pour on a dash of cold milk and eat and you are set uop for a day's sight-seeing and shopping. You can get 10km walking out of one bowl.

thinkingaboutLangCleg · 27/11/2020 23:11

Quaker oats ARE deceptive. Last time I bought a box, I poured some out, only to find that they were Unitarian oats.

Grin I’m sure that's the gospel truth.

NewlyGranny · 27/11/2020 23:11

Cinnamon! It's much easier to spell and say in German.

PickAChew · 27/11/2020 23:26

I've not seen oatmeal for years.

Usually use the £1.20 for a git big bag sainsbury's own brand.

JetBlackSteed · 27/11/2020 23:34

Flavaghans. Overnight soaked oats. Is all.

The guy on the box isn't a Quaker, he is a Puritan.

You live and learn! Next, you'll be telling me the fella on the front of the Scott's Porage Oats box is a Welshman!

Teaandchocolatedigestives · 28/11/2020 08:59

Quaker Jumbo rolled oats for weekdays, soaked overnight then cooked in the microwave.

Aldi organic oats on the hob at weekends. Though, I was disappointed with the last batch, some hard/gritty bits.

ivykaty44 · 28/11/2020 09:08

Flavahans is the only way to go for oats

I agree as several other do

Tesco was the worst
Sainsbury okish

Soaking the oats the night before - regardless of whether you cook or then eat raw, will release the nutrients for your body to absorb once eaten

Not soaking them doesn’t mean the oats are good for you but your body/digestive system can’t get as much goodness from the oats if they aren’t soaked

So do yourself a favour and soak the oats overnight

ivykaty44 · 28/11/2020 09:10

You can get 10km walking out of one bowl.

I get 10 miles cycling out of every 40g soaked raw oats 🚴
